Well I wasn't planning on building another airplane this soon but I had this scratch built Scientific P-40 Warwawk that I framed up quite a few years ago and has been hanging on the wall since then. It has been bugging me that I never finished it along with some of my other projects. A couple of years ago I got a new Golden Bee motor for Christmas and recently got some Brodak dope and other finishing materials.So I have been working towards finishing it slowly lol. I covered the wing with NOS Coverlite dark green covering. A lot stronger than silkspan but it does not shrink as tight and yes you can burn a hole through it easily. Hope to do some more work on it next weekend.

Looks great! I miss mine. There is a build/crash log on CEF and YouTube for mine. I did get this one to Dave Cowell DPC Models/AeroWerkes for reproduction. He will supply the plastic engine cowl with his rendition. His reproduction kits build fine. NFI.

Your needle valve is a sitting duck with that inverted cylinder placement. Flip it back after the photo session.

Yes Jim, I do like your P-40! It has been slow go trying to do much work on such a small model lol! Tried out the new silver sanding sealer Brodak sells and does fill the grain nice. Got the underside painted gray and the olive drab is next.

Made some more progress this past weekend. Got on two coats of gray and a single coat of olive drab.

Hello Jim, I don't have the original decals any more but I do have a color copy of them. I could send you a copy if you like. I bought some Brodak 1/2A Wildcat decals. They are close to the correct size for the wing markings. I am going to paint the mouth and eyes on the cowling. Wish me luck on doing that lol. Richard

Good luck hand-painting those decals. I do have fullsize scans and can email them but there are a few anomalies because I had to digitally stitch the scans from several smaller segments (this is why I was hoping for another crack at finding better scans). PM your email address and I'll send them. Or, I can try to attach PDFs on this forum if you would like them.

Thank you Jim. I almost painted mine with the blue as you did, it really pops with the olive drab. I am going to try use the copy I have to make a pattern for stencils or masks when I paint.

I know I still have the engine, firewall, tank and landing gear. I **might** still have the canopy. If so, the canopy is yours if you want it. Should I look this weekend?

Nice looking model. With the built up wing, I bet she is quite nimble. Just wondering. With the cylinder facing down, is that an advantage? Me, I usually get carried away and ran out of fuel while inverted an had to land that way. Needle valve looks vulnerable.

Hello George, This model was designed to have the cylinder inverted so it is hidden inside the cowling. I have been making some progress with wing glued in, elevator horn installed, rear windows, eyes and teeth painted. Decals were slid on the wing today. It's getting there. Richard

Here are a couple of photos showing the wing decals, machine guns in the wings and the elevator control horn. The control horn I cut out in two pieces. The bottom part is glued through the slit in the elevator and capped off the another piece on the top of the elevator. A little more reinforcement plus it looks more like original single piece control horn.

Thank you Juan, it is one of my favorite Scientific model designs. I was inspired to finish up this plane when I saw Jim's postings a while back. This plane has been framed up and hanging from my workshop peg board for the last fifteen years or so! Don't have any 1/2a fuel on hand since all I have been flying is .35 size models. Fuel, stringe, and lines are being ordered.

I tried breaking in my new engine before flying the plane but had issues. I was filling the tank and then fuel started shooting out the back of the tank through the reed vent hole. After taking the tank apart and checking the reed valve I discovered the bottom tank vent tube was not open from the manufacturing process. I hope to get a small drill bit and clear out the vent and try again.

Yeah, that happens. I had an OS remote wouldn't draw fuel. Found it had not been drilled. In fact some probably didn't know this as at one NATS a vendor selling Cox engines had a bunch of them with no reed installed. If you need one let me know. D>K

Thank you for the offer John. I went to our local Ace hardware today and bought a #60 drill bit and was able to clear the vent tube. Started breaking in the engine early this evening after the NHRA drag racing lol. I am using an old Cox gray competition 5.5x4 prop when I flew 1/2a combat days back in the eighties. Using a glow plug adapter for a standard med plug and 25% nitro. It will take a while to break this one in. After finding a good plug and about third tank it starting holding a rich needle setting. Jim, I hope to weigh the P-40 if I can locate a digital scale.

Flew the P-40 this morning. Three short flights, two laps each. I had a good needle so I think it could be a fuel pick up issue. However, the plane flew great on 1/2a braided lines and when the engine cut out I was very surprised how well it would glide to a soft landing. The left side of the cowl did tear where the mouth was painted so repairs will need to be done. Was hoping to get a video of it flying but maybe next time.
