Title: 1957 super flapper Sky Fury 074 airplane
Post by: Jim Thomerson on December 17, 2010, 03:24:45 PM
This airplane was inspired by Larry Scarenzi's large flapped 1/2A in Flying Models.  I only got a couple of flights out of it and flew loops and inverted.  I was using white thread for lines and a line broke.  I'd love to get another Sky Fury 074.

Super cool airplane!  But was the Sky Fury really a .074?  I only know of the .049 version.  Guess I need to dig out some old AHC ads.

How much flap deflection did you use, if you recall?  BTW, at VSC one year, Larry Scarinzi showed up and I asked about the Jolly Flapper.  He said it was "interesting", but the really neat thing is that he STILL HAD IT!!!  Dunno about youse guys, but maybe the Joisey group could "lean" on Larry to bring it to VSC??

I think I had about 10 degrees either way.  The Jolly Flapper, which I think the ugliest 1/A airplane ever designed, was the inspiration.  The larger Super Flapper (?) is a nice looking airplane and I have seriously considered building one for Classic.  I asked Larry about the Super Flapper, and he said it flew very well.  I found a Sky Fury 049, but I apparently had the only 074 ever made, as I have not been been able to find one anywhere.  Something I saw not too long ago suggested there was also an 06.  There were both 09 and a 15 twins.

Still have my pans somewhere in the stash for the Super Flapper.  If I remember right it called for a .15 engine.   H^^

The Super Flipper shows a Fox .15X on the plans. The Jolly Flapper had a McCoy .09 diesel if I remember correctly...don't have plans for that one.

Actually, that Super Flipper would make a nice .15 size plane with conventional wings too, although Larry's Dynamite is also very nice.

Sky Fury...I had the .15 twin many years ago. Sadly, it disappeared while I was in the Navy. Looking at a 10/55 MAN, they advertised (inside back cover) an .049 single, .09 twin, .15 twin, and a .12 marine twin. I would GUESS that they eventually made a single .06 and .074.

George

Edit: Jim, that was a nice plane. Was it a recent design? Looks familiar!  ;D

It is perhaps an early example of the lineage which has terminated (so far) in the Cheap Thrill.

Hello,

I'm a little lost here, are you saying you had the .074 'back in the day' or do you have it now? If it was years ago, maybe it was a Cub .074? I really never heard of K&B Allyn .074?

As said, maybe I had the only one, or a faulty memory.  I later flew it in class A free flight at the 1960 Nats. I asked Johnny Brodbeck about some new gaskets for it, and he told me they no longer had anything of the Sky Fury line. It and a number of other engines were given away to a friend in 1961 when I dropped out for a while.  I have a fair collection of magazines of the period and will check the ads.

Hi Jim,

As I'm thumbing thru my notes looking for engines over .051 I might of overlooked I found it: Anderson Book mentions a 1956 Sky Fury .075 (should be .074) also John Krickel's 1966 049 Collector News Letter mentions a .074 new for '57, I had totally forgot about reading this. The only was to tell it apart from the outside from the .049 is that the prop driver was extended on the .074

One of my favorite hobbies is collecting info (photos, ads, test reviews, etc.) of 1/2a engines and plastic 'RTF' airplanes from early fifties thru late sixties. Additional engines larger then .051, but smaller then .09 during that time (pre 1960) would of been: O.K. Cub .060, .074, Anderson Royal Spitfire .065 & Comet (Fox) .07

Forgot to mention, cool airplane. I bet it was a blast to fly.

I think I just scored an 074 off eBay.  I haven't taken it apart to measure, but it has the extended prop driver as shown.  Also the screw in head is larger than an 049 head.  I suspect most of the 074's went into making the twin cylinder 15 Sky Fury engines.

Thanks to the information here, I now have two 074's off eBay at reasonable prices. :)  One more came up and I told the guy what it was. It sold for two reasonable prices.  S?P

Hi Jim,

I just saw it, nice engine. If you detail it and clean up needle, etc. Stop off at Walmart and pick up some Perma Blue (liquid gun blue) to redo the black oxide on the needle, tank nuts and screws. The stuff works great.

Hello Jim,
I've had one of these Sky Fury singles sitting on my desk for years. It needs quite a bit to get running. One of the problems is the glow head that's in it does not screw in tight. After fussing with it I came to the conclusion that the head must be for something else but I'll be damned if I can find Sky Fury glow heads. So I decided to just machine one and use turbo style glow plugs. I also have a new in box .049 Deluxe engine so I pulled the head/glow plug out to take some measurements and got a surprise. It was smaller. In looking at the two I saw the "needy" engine piston is a bigger diameter. I pulled the paper work out of the .049 deluxe box and saw that they also made a .074 single so whadda' 'ya know..... I've got what is most likely an .074. In doing some searching I found this thread. Before I get to making a new head I was wondering what you were doing about glow heads for yours???

Another problem is that the needle valve and body is completely missing. Again, looking around over the years and I've never seen an assembly for sale. So before I found out the engine was larger than an .049, I had liberated the needle body and needle from the plastic backplate of a Cox .049 product engine. Its a slightly bigger diameter so I was going to bore the Fury a bit to get it in. If these indeed are rare I'm having second thoughts about doing that.

   Hello Michael;
I am sorry to inform you that Jim Thomerson is no longer with us. Jim was an outstanding modeler and a great guy. He was a member of the club here in St. Louis, MO, the Lafayette Esquadrille, for many years and at the time of this thread publishing, may have been retired and relocated back to his home town of Austin, Texas. I can't remember what year Jim passed away, but he is missed and thought of and mentioned frequently. This thread brought to mind his Cheap Thrill 1/2A stunter that was published in Model Aviation and I think I have the plans for it. I need to look into that again.
Good luck with your engine project and I'm sure Jim is watching and interested!
    Type at you later,
  Dan McEntee

the .074 had the same mounting pattern as the .049  Miami was a Sky Fury hot bed back in late 1950's and early 60;s  the nats  senior and  open 1/2 A speed has been won twice by a sky fury . at local contest one guy would drop an .074 in his 1/2 A , it was good for a little speed until he got caught ,finding glo heads was always a problem .drilling one out to 1/4 32 was always slower .didn't have turbo plugs back then

Oh wow..... I'm very sorry to hear about Jim. I fade in and out of control line so am not always up on the news.

I've had the same experience with 1/2A and standard glow plugs but have heard the turbo style plugs work pretty well so I'm gonna give it a try.
