1/2A Pathfinder engine
« on: June 07, 2024, 06:01:44 PM »
I picked up a built (but not flown) 1/2A Pathfinder at a swap meet.  It has a TeeDee .09 mounted in the nose.  Is this a viable engine for it?  If so, what props should I try?

If not, what engines (preferably a readily available model) would be more appropriate?

Too big at .09. How tight is the .09 for fit? Does it have a big enough tank for the pattern? If that is all questionable, I would look at .061 Norvel, or maybe their .074 (?) if it's on the heavy side. Norvel is NV engines now. They have a web site, which is confusing , but once you get things figured out and an order placed, it takes about a week or so from California. The are in Russia, but I think they have a warehouse/distributor in California, because that is the return address on the packages.

I have an 061 Norvel on mine that I run on 20% nitro with 42' lines. Plenty of power running flat rich. Thinking about going to 52' lines with a leaner setting.

I have seen one flown quite well on a Cox Medallion .049. The plane builds pretty light. If yours isn't, then I'd be looking for something more powerful.

Thanks, guys.  I don’t think this airplane was built with obsessive attention to minimizing weight so, based on your recommendations, I just ordered an .061 Big Mig.
