« on: July 25, 2009, 10:26:22 AM »
I'm sure we all have at least 1 or 2 or move favorite airplanes. Maybe even 1 for each phase of aircraft history.
Here are some of mine and I'll try to post them in order of era/age.

Spad 17"the one with the whopie do's on the t/e of the wing"
p-26 PEASHOOTER
pt-19 Cornell
Supermarine Spitfiire mk1
p-61 black widow
f-4 phantom

I built a  baby Tomahawk that was my all time favorite plane. I believe it was kitted by Dumas. This plane with a Black Widow flew like no other plane I ever owned. I wrecked that plane more times than I can remember. I always put it back together and the last time I set it up with a Dave Brown mount and a Tee Dee. It was real tricky getting the tank height correct. I finally settled on taking out half a rib and boxing it out and sheeting around the tank. I used a 1 oz. Perfect wedge which equally projected out top and bottom of the sheeting. The feed is coming directly through the leading edge. This plane has a real short nose with only about an 1 1/4 from leading edge to firewall. I was now able to use several engines. It flew terrific with an AME .061 plenty of power.  The other plane I truly enjoyed was the Brodak f-82. It was short lived but I sure had a lot of fun showing it off and flying. I accidentally one day rolled out the wrong set of lines which were .008 52' and was completely shocked that this plane still flew remarkably on them. Ken

Sorry I justmeant  I was wondering about the full scale ones we all fell in love with growing up. HeckI remember having a little airplane on floats with a wind up prop when we went to a lake for vacation....

Don't bother to build the Sterling offering of the P-38 , it is at best mediocre. I've had about 3 of them over the years and while it is fun to fly there isn't a lot to do with it .I built 2 within the last few years and the first one had 2 FP 15's, It was a bad move simply because it was so over powered that it was more rocket then plane. It also was not that maneuverable, Did loops and wingovers, inverted was not as good as upright, flights were about 4.5 minutes but as I said they were exciting.
Next I took the kit and trashed about everything. Replaced most of the wood with much lighter stock even to 1/32 ply doublers. Power was 2 OS10/fp's. I was so smart that I basically did the same thing with the lighter weight the 10's were more then enough . Incidentally I had 2 dead engine flights and can say definitely the model didn't care which one went dead, it continued along its merry way.  Incidentally 10's are extremly fuel efficient and flights were long enough to really get tired of it.
If you have to have one then build it light and use 2 Norvel 074's that would probably be just about right,
If you really want a great p-38 profile get Don Hutchinson's plans and have a blast with it. Two 40's whats not to like.

If you want a P-38 for stunt, how about Lew McFarland's version. It used two .19's if I remember correctly.
