Avro C-6 Autogyro
« on: September 06, 2014, 09:26:54 AM »
In the January 1981 issue of Model Aviation there was a full size plan for a 1/2A Avro Autogyro. As soon as the snow cleared I had one built and flying. It has flown every year since at least once.  Fast forward to 2014.

Today I am mostly flying electrics, so it was time to convert the old gyro to E-power. The setup is an AX 2306-2500Kv, 2s 450mah and 12amp esc. Motor control is 2.4Ghz. This combo turns a 6x3 at 13.2K on the ground. I was using a tired Baby Bee, so this should be adequate power.
Hope to fly it in the coming week.

If you want a 1/2A gyro this is a good one, the magazine article and plan are on line, and AMA sells the plan for $3 if you prefer. You do need some pavement to get a gyro up, but this one doesn’t need a long run. Landing on grass is a cinch, when the motor quits just give it some up and auto rotate down to a gentle landing. The fact that the landings are so easy is why the thing has survived all these years with little damage.

With electric power also comes throttle so I’ll be able to do power landing.

I think I've attempted to get autogyros in the air three or four times in my modeling career, and only managed once.

Actually (ewww) following someone's plans may help, though.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Plans do help, first one I did took 2-3 years to figure out. They are tough, both aerodynamically and physically. I currently have four, and except for an occasional blade breaking they all are still flyable.

Had to add nose weight, and still not sure on which prop is best, but I think it will be a 5 1/2x3. It is in the air in about 50 feet so I can use the concrete strip at our field on 42 ' lines.
