Title: 1/2 A wing mounted removable landing gear
Post by: jim gilmore on August 22, 2013, 11:47:05 PM
Ok, This is a question and not any idea yet.
I have about another month and then I expect I'll be back to life in my trailer and building and maybe even flying. I need to remove 1 couch from the wall and add something that will work as workbench and storage area.
But my question is that on grass 1.2A have no need for  landing gear. For you guys that fly 1.3A in the semi arid west and NO grass do you use landing gear.
The second question is what would be the easiest to install and make removable on a 1/2A Though I would prefer wing mounted.
Any of you half A lovers have any concepts ??

I just use different planes, they are small and easy to store.  But if you like the wing mount gear, you could use the type J Roberts used in my Corsiar.  Four screws and the gear comes off.

If you mow the grass low enough a 1/2-A ship will take off just fine.  Fields where horses graze are great, as long as you avoid the droppings.

Or, bring an 8-foot long piece of cardboard, and take off from that.  Landings will be a plop and a backflip, but takeoffs will look nice.

Where I am I am unlikely to see any grass unless it is 420.
I am expecting to see rocks and maybe some russian thisle(tumble weeds).

On the Cheap Thrill, I used a fuselage mounted gear in a vertical ply sandwich. It is held in place by a bolt through the back former of the tank compartment. I haven't thought about wing mounted gear.

Glue small, grooved blocks between two ribs on each wing next to the root sheeting. Drill a hole in the inboard side of each block. The gearwire goes into the hole and nestles in the groove. A small plate across the top screws on to hold the gear.  See the sketch:

fow 1/2A i was think the ta block migh be lighter if i went with 1/8 Ply for the long block and the vertical park coild go to a plate aloge the rib of 1/64 plywood.
Another idea I was thinking was to male the landing gear kind of spring/sprung shape to fit into the a slot and just appling a lil pressure will remove it for no gear flight.
I've seen some on free flight models though for cl they well need to be a lil stiffer.
Thanks for your thoughts though. was looking to see what ideas you all have.

In the past I have used a card table as a runway over grass.  Is about the same as a hand launch.  1/2 A aircraft leaves the table 3' above the ground and is flying before it looses a foot of altitude.  You just have to remember to step back so you don't smack he table.   LL~

Of course "Landings will be a plop and a backflip".

You can also sleeve launch.  Search here, or search on YouTube for videos.

All you need is a folded over rug or piece of cardboard, a stool or chair or stepladder or ..., and a clamp.
