Title: 1/2 a stunt pattern ???
Post by: jim gilmore on April 01, 2015, 10:32:09 AM
For those that fly 1/2a stunt I'm wondering if it is flown exactly the same as the full size stunt pattern?

When Heman Lee came up to the 2012 Northwest Regionals to help California take away all of our trophies in Advanced, he scored 489.5 with a 1/2-A ship by flying the exact same pattern as anyone else.

Whenever 1/2A stunt was flown at the Nats as an unofficial event, the full AMA pattern was to be flown.

due to the fact that most of the guys who fly in our 1/2a event never practice, we only require the beginner pattern.
Also a Cox with an attached tank on 10% nitro is hard pressed to do any more and we like to have fun with what everybody has.

At some point I saw someone mention a 1/2-A event that required the full pattern, but that allowed refueling stops.  I couldn't tell you who it was or whether they still do it, though.

You do need an external tank if you're going to do the full pattern.  And if you're bringing in a lot of people who don't usually practice, holding it to the beginner pattern is probably just as well.

If built properly, ballanced correctly, and has a good, steady performing Black Widow or Golden Bee, the SIG 1/2A Skyray is cabable of the entire AMA pattern, especially if you have a Norvel on the nose. May not be 500 point quality manuevers, but will still do the tricks.
  Type at you later,

The Brodak Baby Clown will easily do the full pattern on 38' .008 lines. And yes, we allow refueling down here in So. CA, but still have an 8 minute time limit.

On a model that does NOT need to refuel is the time to compete the pattern any shorter or longer than a full sized stunt ship ?
Wondering if the pattern on a 1/2a is flown a a much higher speed per lap than the full sized models.

Yes, in the last couple of years we have allowed refueling. but only the last landing counts for points  ;D

I generally use the AP Wasp .061, but also Tee Dee and Medallion and PAW diesels. My Baby Pathfinder flies on 45' lines.

Actually I'm looking at being electric. Was wondering if an electric 1/2 A flys the whole pattern in 1 charge.

Jim
I've been playing with the 1/2A electric for a little while now.  I'm having trouble packing enough battery for over three minutes. I'm thinking about a Pinto or Pathfinder, something around 200sqin, might be big enough for more battery.

PS. Don't tell anyone at CEF. ;D

Now Fred, don't do anything rash.  I've sold a lot of glow engines lately, but not my Cox engines.  Hope to see you at the Grabber this year!

A Baby Flite Streak can do the whole pattern on an 850 mAh 3 cell pack.
