1/2 A Proto Bipe - Dale Kirn's Torquette

Making good progress on my Dale Kirn 1/2 A Proto Bipe the Torquette. Building it for a KOTRC.org memorial event to honor club member, AMA Hall of Famer Dale Kirn. The original plans call for a td049 left hand crank. This build is powered by a Picco P-Zero prepped by Doug Galbreath and modified to run on suction as per the event rules.

Andy Borgogna's Torquette with a stunt tuned AP Wasp is fast.  I know that a couple of speed fliers are planning to use possibly even more "heroic" engines also.  It will be interesting!

We will fly this event in the "cage"!

On 10% Nitro, Andy turned 64mph for standing start 1/2 mile today.  I need to get out the 30% Nitro and make an "official" set of lines so we can get some real flying done.

The Torquette is a really NICE airplane.  Very smooth and controllable, absolutely no problem getting it to groove with the handle locked to your chest.  Landing glide is soft and controllable.  Dale done good!

The plane does fly good, but this contest will be all about the engine.  Like Larry said mine is a mild AP Wasp and it turned 64 mph.  I do have a Norvell that would drop right in, I think I will give it a try before the contest just to see if I can get a little more out of the plane.  As is my only hope is nobody else shows up. ;D  I know this, there will be some dizzy flier by the end of the day.

After seeing Mike's Torquette fly I went home and installed the Norvell.  Hopefully I will get out this weekend and see if there is an improvement.  If not, it's time to break out the serious "Jungle Juice".  I do have one thing in my favor, the Picco is fast but its a pain in the A$$ to set the needle.  My AP Wasp is really easy to get a good needle setting. it will be interesting to see how the Norvell works out.

Since I seem to have become the CD for this event (Bob Werle started it, but he is under the weather), there will be an Unlimited trophy, and a Tee Dee trophy presented. (I'm running a Tee Dee!  ;D )

The original model ran a left-hand Tee Dee, and Dale gave me a left hand crank.  The least I can do is run it at his memorial event.

Jim Rhodes has a couple of killer FAI FF engines to try out, Howard Doering and Joe Brownlee just get an enigmatic smile on their faces when we show what WE have.  I have a sense of doom!  December 2 will be interesting! Maybe we can give them the wrong date?
