Latest Cheap (low dollar) Thrill
« on: November 11, 2014, 02:58:03 PM »
Finally finished it and flew it.
It flies nice and loops, inside and out are no problem. Still get that WOW feeling every time I put one of these in the air.
I still haven't made an airframe for nothing but this one was real close. The foam wing and fuse were packing material and the balsa used was scraps. Foam board for the tail and stab was also some scrap from another larger project.
This little jewel is a 75% White lightning (inspired) with my dependable 1/2a sized electric setup of the HXT 1500kv motor.

Looks great and it is amazing what can be done when the brain is engaged.   Look at what an individual does with corrogated sheets of paper.

The plane's materials might be cheap
but that looks like a decent build to me.
If it flies good then it is good.    y1

Cheers!

I'm a bit disapointed. I was expecting to see a Cheap Thrill...plan designed I think by thompson <sp>.
Nice simple plane by the cheap thrilli think had an ellipitical wing so reminded me of a spitfire...

Yes I thought it was Jim Thomerson's Cheap Thrill. Nice though it is, it isn't IC and balsa, so my interest wilted! I have been wanting to build a Cheap Thrill , but the thought of the transatlantic phone call required and then the man who does the plans is never there and they do not have a system to process cards, so you have to read out all the numbers, if you can ever find him that is. It makes the will to live almost give up! The AMA plans service is a bit of a nightmare! One day I will get through on the phone and order the plans!

Hi Steve,
No don't move it to the electric section. That seems to be about F2b style planes! Your build is 1/2 A and should be here. As Jim said, I didn't intend to knock your build, it was just the name of the thread that got me fired up and then let down! That is entirely my fault. Your build is very interesting and is very well executed. I might just build something similar for the grandchildren to play with on the village playing field. I could not use IC power there and my flying site is further away and needs some effort to get there!
Any rough sketches would be most welcome as well as tips on alternative building materials. I designed a similar system for multiphase motors running DC (did it for my employer!). So the electric bit is fine! Thanks for showing it to us, I might even have a go myself (and that from a dyed in the wool IC flyer!)

Jim, the plane flies really nice. I'm just a sport flier and really ask no more than a few loops from what I build but this plane has exceeded my expectations.

Andrew, the design is the White Lightning. Downloaded the plans on line. It is a sheet balsa plane with about a 28 inch span. Built one out of dollar store foam board and it flew well too. I wanted something with more of a built up (thicker wing) so I reduced the same plan by 25% and began the baby white lightning. It has a 21 inch span. The wing was 5/8 inch thick Styrofoam packing. Instead of putting a spar top and bottom I just cut the wing in half and glued a strip of 3/32 balsa between the sections. Shaped the wing with a sanding block. The fuselage is Styrofoam packing just under 1 inch thick. 1/8 balsa doubler on the front and a strip of 3/32 balsa running the full length of the bottom. It all got a coating of the light weight spackling, sanded and a couple coats of clear water base polyurethane. Ended up pretty light, 1.45 oz without controls or electrics. It's much stronger than I expected as well and maybe less than $2.00 invested in the airframe.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for taking the time to expand on the build. The more I think about it, the more it sounds a good idea for getting the grandchildren hooked and that on a field 200 yards from my house! I can then wean them onto real engines (Sorry Steve I could not help that!).

Thanks for the info,

Andrew.

Andrew, I still have my fox .25, McCoy Read Head .35, Enya .35  and an assortment of cox 020 and .049's from my youth and would love to crank them up but I can walk out my back door and put up an electric on 40 foot lines and the Mrs doesn't even know I have left the house.
There is something to be said about the thrill of flight, from match head rockets to smelly, oily, screamin nitro engines.
It's all good. :)
