Title: "Little Legends"
Post by: Bill Little on April 01, 2007, 08:51:27 AM
Hi All (Hey Roger V.!)

I have a USA-1 from this series ready to cover.  I know, Roger, it has been years, but things get in the way.

I am using a Nrovel .061.  I need about 6-6 1/2 minutes (no more) of run time. I really don't like a lot of laps after the pattern is over.
What size tank, and what fuel?  I have Sig 10% Champion, will that be good?
Also, suggestions on props.  I want to fly on at least 45 feet of .008 (more if possible).

TIA
Bill <><

About 1.5 oz. of fuel, the 10% probably is adequate, I use 15% and read consistently that 1/2As need higher than that, but haven't found it to be a problem.  I carry as much as 2 oz. capacity in some of my planes but don't usually use it all.

Props, I use APC 6x2 or 6x3, they also have a 5.7x3 that works well on the .061s.  They do like to run a solid 2-cycle, high rpms are good.  I've flown them on up to 52' lines but have pretty well settled on 48' for stunt, 42' for combat.  I use the Galbreath head/Nelson plug combination and recommend it highly.

That's all I know from my own experience.  As they say, "Your mileage may vary".

Hi Bill,
Looking forward to seeing it finished, I saw the "bones" picture a loooong time ago!  ;)
I used a 2 oz as I like the extra time to fool around. 1 1/2 oz s/b enough for a pattern as laps are about 3.9-4.0 on 46' lines if I remember the LL Stiletto and LL Genesis correctly.
I also use a 6x2 APC, 15%N.18% oil(80Syn/20 Castor). No need to kill it w/more Nitro, it does fine at 15%, never tried 10%. Have over 300 flights on this combination, same engine.
Galbreath Head, Nelson plug, two gaskets (aka head shims).
Launch at 23,000, depending on weather.
Anything else, ?, just ask my friend!
Missed you at the KOI.
Roger

Thanks, Ray and Roger!  I have a 2 oz. clunk, so I can draw some out.  Also have the 6-2 &3 APCs.  Would really like to see what it does on a 6-3 Tornado I have, but ain't sure if I will try that.  Will make my lines up at 48 feet eye to eye, sound good?

Main thing it looks like I will have to do is get a Galbreath/Nelson head/plug set up.  I have some 20% Cooper fuel that I could add some castor to..........

I am heading down to the Fortress of Solitude to do the wing covering and start on the covering of the 1/2A Snapper!  ;D

Thanks, again!

Bill,
48' sounds good! May I assume you are using .008's? or????
FYI -
My 2 oz clunk is the cylindrical one. I only use two lines, fuel feed line and fill/vent line. I port the fill/vent into the small "Blister" and fill with nose down.
Pls check your e-mail.

NOTICE: It has taken a few years to get Bill to go "downstairs into the FORTRESS of SOLITUDE" and cover the "almost finished" LL USA-1. Please everyone, dont bother him until it is finished, or it might take another three years to see this little jewel finished.

 LL~ LL~
thanks,
Roger

Where can one obtain plans for the Little Legends series of planes.  Thanks for the information.

Peter,
The Steve Buso "Little Legends" plans were prepared for a magazine article but never published or released.
I will check on their availability through a mutual (Steve Buso and I) friend and so advise on this forum.

I felt I should know what this series was and I racked whats left of my poor brain to remember. I was going to ask but waited. Now I understand why could not remember. The series was not published!. Add to this I have not read every issue printed by all published.
I would like to know more about this series and maybe even get some plans.

I got a set many years ago.  Steve drew a set of plans for 1/2A profile stunters that mimiced the 5 USA planes that have won the FAI F2B World Championships, hence the "Little Legends" moniker.  Even signatures of the USA Champs with a "disclaimer"!  LL~

There were originally drawn showing the VA .049 (I'm using a Norvel .061), and all use the same ribs, but wing tips, stab/elevators, fuselage side view, etc., are reductions of the Gieseke Nobler, Stiletto, Genesis 46, USA-1, and Impact to suit the "common main wing".  All 5 designs on one sheet.

They are really very capable flyers, but the availability of plans was very limited since Steve suffered a serious health problem at about this time.  He's recovered now, I understand and doing well, and a nicer guy you'll never meet!  Maybe the article can now be published?? (hadn't thought of that!)  That would be super!

Billy G, (and Big Bear also)Sincere thanks for the suggestion but I believe I have what I need, ie contact w/S. Buso, to pursue this.
Just give me a little more time.

I had posted some more info., it disappeared in "CyberSpace", so here goes, again -
The LL's are:Nobler, Stiletto, USA-1, Genesis,Impact.
Due to variations in wing tips, fuselage profiles and horiz. surfaces, the specs vary as follows:
Wing Span = 32'-33 1/16", O'all Length = 24 1/2" - 26 7/8", Wing area = 188 - 198 sq in, Tail area = 39.6 - 49.8, tail - wing % = 20.2 - 26%

Stay tuned,
Roger

Hi Roger,

Since I had listed the planes, I am glad you listed the specs.  I didn't have my set handy, so I appreciate your contribution in that regard! y1  I didn't even realize there were THAT much differences in the planes.  But, I know Steve did a great job of recreating them in small scale profiles, and that would be in line with the differences in the full size models.  IIRC, the Impact was about the longest, and maybe "biggest", but I could be off base there.  Is the Gieseke the "smallest?  I want one to put a good .049 in just so if we have a 1/2A stunt event, I can run an .049  I haven't had the plans out in a couple years. ;D

Thanks, Buddy!

Okay,
I have an okay to distribute the plans if I dont make money on the task.

However, I would feel guilty not being able to somehow thank/compensate Steve Buso for his efforts on the plans (even though he has not asked for same).

Question:
I ask those interested to let me know what they think adequate compensation per set of plans would be for Steve, after the cost of repro and mailing. He doesnot know I am asking this question and I would prefer he does not until we can present him with something ("IF" we do it!).

Whether or not I take on this task depends on some personal commitments over the next few weeks and the responses to the above question.

They are great plans.
Amount sounds fair, about what I had in mind, as it will allow something for Steve.
I'll let this run a couple of days then let you know.

Never herd of the ''little Legends'' until now. Sounds like they would be a really fun build!

I am really out of my element when it comes to 1/2A (or thereabouts) engines!

The plans show the VA .049 (as far as I know I can't get them).  I am using Norvel .061s.  I am wondering about the ne Brodak .049 and .061. (??)  I do not have a clue as to how the measure up to the VA or Norvel.....  "Technically", they should be .049 powered to fly "1/2A Stunt".

I am sorry, I hate to do this, but -.
Background:
Responses re wanting the plans was quick.
I reciprocated and did my best to get the mailing tubes and all the repro completed so I could mail plans as soon as payments were received.
Most of you responded quickly and for this I thank you.
I then posted a request for info for those who had not replied.
I have not received any responses to the post.
Current situation:
I will monitor e-mail and this site for a few more hours. Lack of response this evening will be taken as a "no - interest" reply.
Summary:
For those that ignored the post re their desires, I am sorry, but I am going to the Post Office this week and will mail those plans I have been paid for or advised the payment is enroute.
It is the right thing to do for those that have been prompt.
I will not repeat the offer to distribute the plans.

I understand that we are all busy.
I believe I run my life efficiently and have always responded promptly to inquiries.
I am known to be intolerant of tardiness.
Again, sorry, I tried my best,
Roger

Joe at S&S sent my .008 lines out to me with no problem, just got to make them up.  I really want to get teh 1/2A Snapper and L.L. USA-1 out to the field!  I need some real old time fun. y1

I have been studying the plans now for a few days and now I have a couple of questions at this point:

Where in the world do we find the spinners and wheels?

My favorite question is:

How does one cut the lightening holes in the foam wing cores? I see the note showing you how to further make the holes larger but can one cut these things with a bow and still come out good? What I am asking is technique. Tips? tricks?

Received my copy today. Thanks for all the effort, Roger. That extra copy of the ribs was a nice touch.

That note of endorsement by the "Big Legends" was cute.

I have the same question about the spinners and wheels. Especially spinners with different profiles. Apparently Steve Buso had the same question...with the note to send him one if you find them.  ;)

re Wheels:
Du-Bro P/N 100MW are Mini lite 1" Wheels.  I believe they  also have a 1 1/4" Lite wheel. They are a little wide but can be "sanded" to shape.
IF you can find them, Peck Polymers made a Vintage Wheel, 1" Clear plastic hub, tire looks like an "o" ring. P/N PA099. They are fragile
re Spinners:
Never found any that fit the shape on the plans. Old Veco 1" spinners, if they can be found, can be used, though not the "design" shape shown on the plans.
re Foam Wing Coring -  I bought my foam wings, cored, from Jim Pearson.

Any other 1/2A guys have a source for 1" or 1 1/4" Lite wheels for 1/2A planes? Please let us know.
Enjoy, post pictures when available.

I'm almost embarrassed to reveal that I get my 1/2A wheels mostly from toys at the $Dollar Store...4 wheels for a buck, not bad when you can find the right size.  Last one I bought was a semi, so I scored 8 wheels for that buck!  12.5 cents each, can't beat it.

Some of them I have to drill out and sleeve with aluminum tubing, but that works great too.

My LHS carries nice-looking, light wheels in the 1" to 2" range, seems like they're 3 or 4 bucks a pair.  I guess the RC guys use 'em for tail wheels.

Ray, (and everyone else) I am a thrifty modeler. If I can find a deal like that I would be proud to say so. Many items of everyday use and other not thought about sources are fair game with me when it comes to making models. Like the teflon tubes used on carberator cleaner cans, brake clean and WD40. I would go to the nearest auto mechanic garage or tire store and bring a can with a label on it saying to deposit used aerosol straws here and ask if I could leave it for a while and they would gladly save some for me.  Sure some probably got thrown away but I still came away with quite a bit for my own use. Those things are great for using when wire rigging a plane or using pull-pull controls.
I also use the little idler wheels in old cassette tapes for tension for same. They also make a very decent wheel hub of very light weight unless it is wider than you want for narrow wheel pants... These are also good for a pull-pull arrangement for ailerons on lightweight R/C models. Or if you are rigging a moving joystick or rudder pedals.

Now... How about those holes in the foam wing cores?

Hey guys just wondering has anyone thought of building them in full fuse. form? would it be possible/work? has any one tried it and do half A engines work when mounted inverted? most half A's i see are upright
Title: Re: "Little Legends"
Post by: Robert McHam on April 27, 2007, 02:26:22 PM
Actually I thought of trying a full fuse version and of course mounting the motor cylinder down.
In thinking this, I began wondering how little of power one could use. Reason I began thinking this is because I presently do not own  Tee Dee For which these are obviously intended. I do have a few Cubs and Cox reedies which are radial mount. I also am lacking  The 1/4" X 1/4" hardwood for the beam mounts.
Since I did not know of these plane designes before this thread was started I did not imagine their actual size though these dimensions were posted.

I still am very excited and am going to build one way or another, several if not all of these planes! How could I not?

Have the foam core wings sheeted, it's off to the side for awhile.

Yes I thought of a full fuse for the Impact. And yes these little motors will fly mounted inverted. I had a Pinto with a TD .049 and a Norvel in it and they both flew great. As a matter of fact I learned the beginner pattern with it. H^^ %^

Actually back in the day I too had a Pinto, which by the way, since it was a scaled down version of the Oriental could have a place as one of the little legends.
My Pinto had a Tee Dee .051 which I had bought especially for the job. I didn't have a scale and it never flew as I was young and covered it with emerald green Monokote and trimmed in gold. It felt so heavy and was indeed tail heavy and I simply felt that it was too heavy to fly as it sat and I hung a one ounce fishing weight on the prop and still it was tail heavy. Since I knew that I couldn't put a weight on it that far forward anyway, I simply gave up on it ever flying but darned if it didn't look great! It was a hanger queen.

I guess I should try to look for an affordable Tee Dee... If such a thing exists anymore...
Anyone got a super deal on one?

Title: Re: "Little Legends" - Laser cut ribs
Post by: Roger Vizioli on April 29, 2007, 05:44:28 AM
I was asked if there is a source for laser cut ribs for the Little Legends. I dont know of any that are readily available, but I can ask some of the better known cutters, but first have to know how much interest there is.
Question: How many of you who obtained the LL Plans would be interested in same and how many sets would you plan to buy, naturally we need pricing before final decision.
If a reasonable source is found, we can share the setup costs then each procure his own ribs directly.  ???
Just curious.

I would definitely take two sets to start with.  In addition, I know of another person who somehow already had a copy of the Little Legend plans who would also like to have a couple of sets.
Thank you for undertaking yet another task that will bring pleasure and satisfaction to many.

I would take two sets of them I got my eye on the Nobler of course and the Impact. I think it would be neat to copy the paint scheme from the build articles. y1

Count me as interested. It will depend dearly on cost. I have of course peen playing with the idea of cutting from foam as I have indicated previously but I do love a built up wing.

There are build articles floating around? This too would interest me, especially if any of the pics are in color. Are there scans?

I have not given up on the foam wings yet. It would be nice to have at least one foam and one balsa each to compare.

As for the foam variety It has been suggested to me to go the combat style and instead of cutting cores as per plans, to  use super light foam to cut the cores and put a full length balsa spar at the high point of the airfoil and instead of sheeting with balsa, covering with Doculam and skewering the TE on for the flaps. This would be a lot less work and should be lighter than the plan design yet be quite strong.

Comments?

Rather than a Tee Dee, which, although powerful, is a pain to get to run through the full pattern, buy an AP Wasp .061 from Hobby People (See the thread on the Brodak .061 vs .049 and "Norvel no more" threads about this engine).  I have two, and both will drive a 6x2 APC prop over 22K on Powermaster 15% Nitro fuel with added castor oil.

They have a carburetor instead of a CL venturi, but a paperclip to hold the thing open works just fine.  The engine likes a lot of fuel to start, but once it is going it is rock solid all the way through the pattern, running suction, not even muffler pressure.

And, it is inexpensive!  You will probably pay less than for a used Tee Dee.

Who was it, Howard Rush or someone, who pulled this same ruse, "the engine is ____ .25, true, there is no way a .25 will pull this plane, also true"--turns out it was a tri-engine if I remember right. Couldn't find the thread.
