"Little Legends"
« on: April 01, 2007, 08:51:27 AM »
Hi All (Hey Roger V.!)

I have a USA-1 from this series ready to cover.  I know, Roger, it has been years, but things get in the way.

I am using a Nrovel .061.  I need about 6-6 1/2 minutes (no more) of run time. I really don't like a lot of laps after the pattern is over.
What size tank, and what fuel?  I have Sig 10% Champion, will that be good?
Also, suggestions on props.  I want to fly on at least 45 feet of .008 (more if possible).

TIA

About 1.5 oz. of fuel, the 10% probably is adequate, I use 15% and read consistently that 1/2As need higher than that, but haven't found it to be a problem.  I carry as much as 2 oz. capacity in some of my planes but don't usually use it all.

Props, I use APC 6x2 or 6x3, they also have a 5.7x3 that works well on the .061s.  They do like to run a solid 2-cycle, high rpms are good.  I've flown them on up to 52' lines but have pretty well settled on 48' for stunt, 42' for combat.  I use the Galbreath head/Nelson plug combination and recommend it highly.

That's all I know from my own experience.  As they say, "Your mileage may vary".

Hi Bill,
Looking forward to seeing it finished, I saw the "bones" picture a loooong time ago!  ;)
I used a 2 oz as I like the extra time to fool around. 1 1/2 oz s/b enough for a pattern as laps are about 3.9-4.0 on 46' lines if I remember the LL Stiletto and LL Genesis correctly.
I also use a 6x2 APC, 15%N.18% oil(80Syn/20 Castor). No need to kill it w/more Nitro, it does fine at 15%, never tried 10%. Have over 300 flights on this combination, same engine.
Galbreath Head, Nelson plug, two gaskets (aka head shims).
Launch at 23,000, depending on weather.
Anything else, ?, just ask my friend!
Missed you at the KOI.

Thanks, Ray and Roger!  I have a 2 oz. clunk, so I can draw some out.  Also have the 6-2 &3 APCs.  Would really like to see what it does on a 6-3 Tornado I have, but ain't sure if I will try that.  Will make my lines up at 48 feet eye to eye, sound good?

Main thing it looks like I will have to do is get a Galbreath/Nelson head/plug set up.  I have some 20% Cooper fuel that I could add some castor to..........

I am heading down to the Fortress of Solitude to do the wing covering and start on the covering of the 1/2A Snapper!  ;D

Thanks, again!

Bill,
48' sounds good! May I assume you are using .008's? or????
FYI -
My 2 oz clunk is the cylindrical one. I only use two lines, fuel feed line and fill/vent line. I port the fill/vent into the small "Blister" and fill with nose down.
Pls check your e-mail.

NOTICE: It has taken a few years to get Bill to go "downstairs into the FORTRESS of SOLITUDE" and cover the "almost finished" LL USA-1. Please everyone, dont bother him until it is finished, or it might take another three years to see this little jewel finished.

Peter,
The Steve Buso "Little Legends" plans were prepared for a magazine article but never published or released.
I will check on their availability through a mutual (Steve Buso and I) friend and so advise on this forum.

I felt I should know what this series was and I racked whats left of my poor brain to remember. I was going to ask but waited. Now I understand why could not remember. The series was not published!. Add to this I have not read every issue printed by all published.
I would like to know more about this series and maybe even get some plans.

I got a set many years ago.  Steve drew a set of plans for 1/2A profile stunters that mimiced the 5 USA planes that have won the FAI F2B World Championships, hence the "Little Legends" moniker.  Even signatures of the USA Champs with a "disclaimer"!  LL~

There were originally drawn showing the VA .049 (I'm using a Norvel .061), and all use the same ribs, but wing tips, stab/elevators, fuselage side view, etc., are reductions of the Gieseke Nobler, Stiletto, Genesis 46, USA-1, and Impact to suit the "common main wing".  All 5 designs on one sheet.

They are really very capable flyers, but the availability of plans was very limited since Steve suffered a serious health problem at about this time.  He's recovered now, I understand and doing well, and a nicer guy you'll never meet!  Maybe the article can now be published?? (hadn't thought of that!)  That would be super!

Billy G, (and Big Bear also)Sincere thanks for the suggestion but I believe I have what I need, ie contact w/S. Buso, to pursue this.
Just give me a little more time.

I had posted some more info., it disappeared in "CyberSpace", so here goes, again -
The LL's are:Nobler, Stiletto, USA-1, Genesis,Impact.
Due to variations in wing tips, fuselage profiles and horiz. surfaces, the specs vary as follows:
Wing Span = 32'-33 1/16", O'all Length = 24 1/2" - 26 7/8", Wing area = 188 - 198 sq in, Tail area = 39.6 - 49.8, tail - wing % = 20.2 - 26%

Stay tuned,
Roger

Hi Roger,

Since I had listed the planes, I am glad you listed the specs.  I didn't have my set handy, so I appreciate your contribution in that regard! y1  I didn't even realize there were THAT much differences in the planes.  But, I know Steve did a great job of recreating them in small scale profiles, and that would be in line with the differences in the full size models.  IIRC, the Impact was about the longest, and maybe "biggest", but I could be off base there.  Is the Gieseke the "smallest?  I want one to put a good .049 in just so if we have a 1/2A stunt event, I can run an .049  I haven't had the plans out in a couple years. ;D

Thanks, Buddy!

Okay,
I have an okay to distribute the plans if I dont make money on the task.

However, I would feel guilty not being able to somehow thank/compensate Steve Buso for his efforts on the plans (even though he has not asked for same).

Question:
I ask those interested to let me know what they think adequate compensation per set of plans would be for Steve, after the cost of repro and mailing. He doesnot know I am asking this question and I would prefer he does not until we can present him with something ("IF" we do it!).

Whether or not I take on this task depends on some personal commitments over the next few weeks and the responses to the above question.

Hey gents. Count me for a set just let me know when and were to send.

I was working on 1/2a versions of Hunts genesis, a legacy and possibly a patternmaster all with 061's until i came upon this post ;D

Never herd of the ''little Legends'' until now. Sounds like they would be a really fun build!

I am really out of my element when it comes to 1/2A (or thereabouts) engines!

The plans show the VA .049 (as far as I know I can't get them).  I am using Norvel .061s.  I am wondering about the ne Brodak .049 and .061. (??)  I do not have a clue as to how the measure up to the VA or Norvel.....  "Technically", they should be .049 powered to fly "1/2A Stunt".

George Aldrich drew up 1/2A plans in two different sizes for his Nobler, Agwagon and Magnum.  I saw these at an auction some years ago at the VSC, but did not score any.  They are out there somewhere, several copies of each.

There is a rumor of long lines for "mass mailings" to a distant Uncle (Sam) on Mon and Tues that might delay my going near the Post Office 'til Wednesday.  n~

All requested plans packed and ready to mail.
Still awaiting some mailing info and payments for (3) who expressed intent to purchase.
If you changed your mind, please advise. If the check is in the mail, please advise!
I would prefer to make one trip to the Post office, not multiple trips.
Bill G., George B., Peter H., Bob Mc. You should have received an e-mail notifying you that I received your payment and mailing address.
Ralph W. - I understand yours is in the mail.
Thanks,
Roger

Robert,
Sounds like a "I got my stunt magazine, did you get yours post??"   ;)
Hope to hear from the others in a day or so. I dont think it is fair to keep the rest waiting and may have to make an extra trip to the PO.

To all: With the extra time, I decided to make, and include, a separate copy of the rib templates so you dont have to cut up your plans.   H^^

I am sorry, I hate to do this, but -.
Background:
Responses re wanting the plans was quick.
I reciprocated and did my best to get the mailing tubes and all the repro completed so I could mail plans as soon as payments were received.
Most of you responded quickly and for this I thank you.
I then posted a request for info for those who had not replied.
I have not received any responses to the post.
Current situation:
I will monitor e-mail and this site for a few more hours. Lack of response this evening will be taken as a "no - interest" reply.
Summary:
For those that ignored the post re their desires, I am sorry, but I am going to the Post Office this week and will mail those plans I have been paid for or advised the payment is enroute.
It is the right thing to do for those that have been prompt.
I will not repeat the offer to distribute the plans.

I understand that we are all busy.
I believe I run my life efficiently and have always responded promptly to inquiries.
I am known to be intolerant of tardiness.
Again, sorry, I tried my best,
Roger
