Norvel AME .074
« on: October 15, 2010, 07:29:50 PM »
Hello Pilots

How much wing area will a Norvel .074 fly upto for just casual stunt flying . ? ???

I have just ordered both the .061 and .074 brand new in box from Alex.
klondike17@juno.com  in Long Beach,CA

He set them up for control line for me and also has parts for them if needed.
I would like to get an idea of what size cl plane i could build for these engines.

Any help would be great.  Thank You - Bryan H^^

Bryan, I can't answer your question directly. I do though fly my Brodak Pathfinder with a Norvel .074. The plane probably has too much power with this engine. I run it generally rich and I fly it on 45' lines. I have built and flown 2 Sig Akromasters in which I powered them with .15 size engines . I had to add a lot of tail weight to these planes especially with a muffler. I always felt the .074 would perform well here due to it being lighter. The Akromasters were designed around a non muffled Fox.15 but I've witnessed several using Cox Medallion engines. I know the .074 can turn up the rpm's , I just don't know where its prop limitations are. I'm currently using a 6x3 Master Airscrew on mine. This engine is in the funny displacement category. It seems like a 7x2 would be a good choice if you could find one. The only one that comes to mind is the old presswood Tornado props. This engine still likes to turn up initially. I think something in the mid 19k range on launch. A higher pitch prop is not going to let the engine find its happy state. My version is the r/c version with the carb wired open. I'm not sure if this engine was ever made with a control line venturi. Ken

Seems to me that any 7 inch prop can be modified to use on the norvel .074.
By modifying the pitch. Do a search about repitching props.
But NOT WOODEN props.
Or you coulds take a 7x3 or 7x4 and just adjust the length to find a sweet spot between the props size and bite.
Maybe cut to a 6.5x3 or so.
I think the .074 should fly an acromaster or a ringmaster jr. or a jr. flight streak.
Providing you do not over build it.
