Taipan 2.5 Front Intake Rear Exhaust
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:42:14 AM »
Guys:

Finally found my Taipan 2.5, hiding in an O.S. Twinstack drawer. (of all places) This is the engine I'm using on my Perky this year.

I bought it from an elder gent at a MECA Collecto, it was 'recently reworked' by a gent that signed it on the crankcase...

The name that is etched in is Fred Ginsler...(etched script is difficult to read, but that's what it looks like)

Anybody know Fred? Like to ask him what his 'usual practice' was with these...Venturi is aluminum casting, highly polished; head has had fins removed, also highly polished. Crankcase pressure nipple bored thru the left beam mount casting, horizontally into crankcase...between the mounting bolt holes: very trick.

Mike,

The "Gold Head" Taipan had a suspect crankshaft when pushed to the limit.

Apart from that a nice handling motor.

A Rossi Piston/cylinder set will drop straight in.

How about a pic of yours - sounds interesting.

Mike,

no pic there, just an error page.

Standard mods are a Rossi mk2 generic p/l and a Nelson plug/head button.

After the crank breaks you can fit a modified Enya 15 or ASP/Magnum 15 TBR glow crank.

A ST G15 crank may even fit.

In the long term there may be an unbreakable replacement crank available.

I recently aquired one of these off of the Bay, it seems to be missing the NVA. And I'm not sure if the compression is up to snuff. Any ideas for replacement parts for these units?

Thanks,

Tony,
As Ray said in the post above yours, the Mk2 Rossi P/L will fit straight in.

NVA? any 4mm will fit, a Super Tigre (or clone) is preferable.

I have two W.A.M. era .29's that are Rattler looking, but were made by Doug Ward. They too have the pressure tap on the engine mount.

As the Intake is Central , Id think the Super Tigre Crank youd want to use would be the 20/15 , unless you want to stroke it .
a 20/19 or 20/23 might fit .

20/15s were slower than G-15s with the same liner , so the 20 series crank would likely want to be retimed . Front Bearing'd be non std .
