Speed Events at the 2016 Brodak Fly In
« on: October 04, 2015, 10:08:00 AM »
I'm planning to request continuation of the same events as 2015 with the possible addition of Fox 35 Speed.

The current and carry over schedule is:

Perky with three awards
Clown Speed with three awards
One overall closest-to-average award

I would like to hear from five potential entries before I ask to add Fox 35 Speed.
I will request three awards and include Fox 35 along with the others for the average speed award.

I will delegate the task of submitting proposed Fox 35 Speed rules to C.T. Shaffer.

I am planning on attending and also have a Fox 35 Speed model and plan on building a 2nd one...

here the are the rules that the St Louis Club and other clubs have been flying with. The Fox 35 speed event was started here in St Louis by John Moll and we had 12 entries in Fox 35 Speed in our May speed Contest

Here are the rules that John Moll wrote:

Thanks to Fred for posting the Fox results. The Fox .35 Speed event rules are also posted in the results thread. They seem to be well thought out and leave room for creativity and, with the average speed prize, ala Perky, leave something for many different levels of participants. Lines are 60' x .016 solids. We should be able to field 3 entries from our crowd in N.J. Maybe more.   Later, TS

Thank you, Tommy.

I will go forward with this with the following amendments:

Any model design is OK.
Lines: .016" solid or .018" stranded.
Can be hand launched if the field does not work for ROG (but a landing gear is still required).
Pull test: 30 pounds, thus no weighing required.
Standard fuel means 10% nitro maximum.

This is what I would use at The Brodak.
I'm still open to discussion.

Looks good Paul. Guys will be concerned about fuel so maybe we should specify Brodak's 10n x 29 castor fuel. Also, some of these things would not take kindly to anything other than pavement launch. Small wheels, short coupled, low to ground, etc.

I understand the HARD CORE speed concept.

But I still want to give some slack to the Brodak sport flyers who want to fly off grass with 7-strand lines.

Using 10/29 across the board is OK with me.

I expect that the winners will pop for 16-solids and fly on the circle.

It's a GO deal from my end.

What fuel do the guys use at the St Louis Club contest? You should try to use the same Nitro oil mix as they use so we can compare results.
29% castor is a lot of goo.

We used the fuel with castor oil, 10% nitro

By the way the models really do need a paved take off surface, but does not need to be fully paved circle. Any of the circles that John has with a paved takeoff ramp would work.

We also made a set of .016 solid lines available for anyone that wanted to use them so that we could encourage folks with Ringmasters and other Fox 35 powered models to fly that did not want to invest in the lines. This also sets the line length at 60 feet so that they are timed correctly

;D  If the Good Lord allows me to live and nothing bad happens, I'd like to participate!!!  I really hope the use of the .018" stranded will be permitted.  Also, since this will be flown over grass, why not just require minimum 2.75" or 3.00" wheels .... Dubro, Brodak, Dave Brown, etcetera??  Yes, they're big, clunky and awkward but it makes the grass field more acceptable and places everyone with the same burden when it comes to speed.  Just a thought (plus I won't have to change what I'm already using  ;D

It would be great if you can make it. The more the merrier! And diversity is good. BUT.  Remember that the rules are already in place with several meets held this year with great success. The rules allow for a very wide range of approaches which makes them appealing to many. You can use whatever wheels that you like but, since this is a speed contest, smaller wheels or one wheel would provide less drag.  TS

My bad!! From the wording of a couple of the posts previous to mine I was under the impression that it was over grass (life being what it is, I've never had the opportunity to attend or visit the Brodak site).

I got to do some test flying this past weekend with the help of my flying buddies/pit crew. One on the starter and another as official launcher. Me in the middle. Works well. The actual times were a bit disappointing though. With about 10 flights we couldn't break out of the 40's. Ah well, it will be a long winter :). As with all speed competitions WE NEED MORE please!
I am planning to schedule a perky/fox .35 meet at our field in Middlesex, N.J. sometime in the spring before Brodak and will announce the date when it is fixed. We will be carefull to follow the existing rules for both events as closely as possible, including Fox fuel with 25% castor oil.

    Maybe someone will come.    TS
