First meet of the season at Middlesex
« on: April 24, 2017, 05:47:03 AM »
Despite earlier predictions of rain, yesterday was perfect for any flying event. This year we are including many events into one day because, with fewer participants, we can get more in. It is assumed that we may not have time for every event and that's how it happened. Events not flown were Foxberg and 1oz Goodyear. Maybe next time we will get at least one of those in there.
Events flown included our Sportsman Clown. It was closely contested. The goal is to get no more than 140 laps with an airspeed of not faster than 22 sec. All manner of combos were flown. There were 2 nova rossi .12's, one Conquest, 1 N-R .15, a diesel and one LA .15. I don't have all the numbers but one of the .12's and the LA overachieved, the Conquest was close, diesel not quite there and the N-R .15 won with a 139. Good racing and a good workout for, at least this geezer!
We are trying out a clown speed event. Proto style. 16 laps. It gives us a chance to run the 'hot ships' that are too fast to keep up with in a race. Results:  Dave Edwards 99.58   TZ .18
                                                               T Schaefer      99.13    TZ  .18
                                                               Al Ferarro       97.26    TZ  .18
                                                               Ernie Evon      65.19    N-R .12
                                                               Raul Diaz        54.86    ?
PERKY:            Ferarro/Vigani   111.07    Fora      While these times are pretty good
Schaefer            111.07  N-R .15   we still have some work in order to
Edwards            106.47   For a      catch ' THE GATOR'.
                                                              Diaz                  74.47     Nelson
                                       Fox Speed        Schaefer           106.47
                                                              Ferarro             101.65
                                                              Vigani                85.27
                                                              Edwards             83.30
                                                              Diaz                   80.35
We were very lucky to have a great crew to do the timing and lap counting. Also, Thanks to Phil Valente and Dave King for manning the 'officials table'.    Next scheduled meet is May 14.

Rules.  Any legal NCLRA set up with the exception that one wheel gear is allowed. .015 stranded Clown lines. ie  52' 6'' +/- 6".

The whole idea was to use our NCLRA Clown equipment but in proto speed format. So, if it is legal for clown racing, it is legal for clown speed. We are on 52' lines, however.

Now it is a matter of tuning for pure speed without the lap economy and restart concerns.  I would expect these planes to get up there with the fastest perkies in the range of 110-115 by the end of the season. I dont think any of us have played around with the tz enough to know where we will end up in a pure speed event.

The mix of racing and speed seems to work, we had good turnout and ended up putting up lots of heats.  Probably more hours of competition than we have had in a while without killing our few remaining pilots.  Speed is nice because you can squeeze in a flight anytime you are ready, any order, between heats, etc. No need to wait for anyone but your ground crew and two timers.

First contest of the season was good to set benchmarks.  Goals for the year: add ten mph to these times

Fox speed: 90mph - the fastest box stock fox 35 stunt (that I am aware of anyway)
Perky speed: aim for 115 playing with venturi and props on the fora, gotta catch Al first
Clown speed: target 110mph, starting at 100 with my racing setup, this seems doable

Is 110 not ambitious enough?  What can a tz 0.18 do on a clown?  Not sure how fast the worlds fastest clown was.

Just make something you are comfortable with containing 10% nitro.  I like 25 castor but have used 10/22 powermaster.
