Brodak Speed Events.
« on: February 08, 2017, 04:08:28 PM »
The Brodak Fly In for 2017 has been approved.

The Speed events have been approved.

Clown Speed has been dropped.
Perky Speed remains unchanged.
Fox 35 Stunt Speed continues.  There are a few revs to the St Louis rules including no rear valves and displacement capped at the stock displacement. We will be using 10% nitro in ALL events, including this event.
A new stock engine sportsman stunt speed event has been added.  It is any either/or deal with Fox 35 Speed entrants excluded.
The single "closest to average" award remains.

The new rules are ridiculous. Who is going to take apart the engines to check them for displacement and will that be before the contest starts? The Fox 35 speed rules had it right the first time because the engine case has very little room for performance improvement without affecting the exterior look. The part about about not allowing exhaust extensions is also unbelievable, they say it's supposed to be an entry-level event but yet they're allowing internal leadouts with a button bellcrank.  ???

The St Louis rules have always allowed internal button leadouts on the bellcrank. The rules have always said "Any Airplane" so the use of buttons on the bellcrank have always been allowed. There has never been a wing span min or max or even shape, but it does say it must have one wheel. Make it fly (ROG with at least one wheel) with a Fox 35 Stunt the required number of level laps and you are good.

I've put buttons on many bellcranks.  But I've never built a whole engine.  In an event that allows unlimited engine work, button leadouts are no big deal.

All events had displacement limits until they started allowing electric motors in stunt and scale.  As far as I can see, we still have displacement limits in speed, racing, combat and carrier.  I've never seen an engine measured.  I know they measure engines that set speed records, I just never witnessed it myself.

I guess I somebody's conscience will allow him to win The Brodak with an oversize engine he can take it up with Saint Peter.

Fair enough Paul. The speed races I go to with my bikes are also honor system. It works and reduces the complication of motor tear downs. Of course if 'Uncle Willy" were here I would be honored to have him tear my motor apart!   TS

The Brodak Fly In 2017 info has been approved and blessed by the powers-that-be.

Fox 35 Speed - St Louis Rules (with 10% nitro).  One mile from a standing start.
Perky Speed - the usual NASS rules.   One mile from a standing start.
Sportsman Stunt Speed (new event).  Half mile from a flying start.

On prize for closest-to-average.

Fox 35 Speed and Sportsman Stunt Speed are an either/or deal, like beginner & expert stunt.

  That's good news.
FYI every stock Fox .35 Stunt I checked is bigger than .352 as stated in the new rules. :o

So what are the measured sizes on your Fox 35's?   I say if it is less than .355 it is legal if you round it out.   VD~

The RV Fox is one of the most innovative engines made for the event.

I think an "outlaw" version of Fox speed needs to be created.....like the original set of rules.

Rule 1. no whining
Rule 2. see rule 1.

1/2A combat started this way.  #^

They asked me to use the Saint Louis rules.  That's what I'm trying to do, with the exception of the oddball 5%  nitro rule.   Fox 35 will use the same 10% as eight other events at The Brodak and countless other events worldwide.

If wouldn't have set up the rules like St. Louis, but with the exception of the fuel I will use them.

As far as "killing the event", only four guys built special airplanes and engines and five used stock engines and sport planes.

Last year was advertised as "the last Brodak", so those who built special stuff for that contest did so with the knowledge that they might only get one shot.  Fortunately Mr. Brodak felt better and decided to continue the contest.  So 2017 is a bonus.
