Scale scoreboard photos from The Brodak
« on: August 28, 2016, 07:56:24 AM »
Did anybody get pictures of the scale scoreboards at The Brodak?  I usually do, but this year my camera went sour on me.    I would like to clarify I point that I can't recall.

Incidentally, it was an expensive Nikon.  Fortunately it was within the one year warranty and and they fixed it at no charge & in a short time.

I asked John for these, you are right, the pictures of the score boards often get overlooked

Thanks, that's what I was looking for.

There were 5 entries in Sport Scale and I came in second.  So second place falls within the 21% to 40% range and should be considered to be within the top 30%.

With very small numbers you can look at the concept of "top 30%" in several ways.  Sure with 100 entries it would simply be 30 out of 100.  But with the small numbers of CL scale flyers we need to round off in a way that includes rather than excluded.

Only one flyer out of five (20%) beat me.  So isn't that a top 30% finish?

with 5 entries the 30% number turns out to be 1.5 and the numbers have been rounded up in the past, that should relate to 2 people getting the invitation. It depends how the numbers are calculated

Send an message to Allen or Bob Heywood and ask to have the numbers re-run using the 30% rule. Last year I was told they were rounding up.

with 7 in profile that comes to 2.1 so two people would get an invitation there

It is also not clear if the number based on how many actually showed and flew or the number of entries. This needs to be written down and documented in the contest information.

In my opinion, if you go to a major contest and finish high, you should still get the benefit of no-shows and those who couldn't get the engine started or chickened out due to the wind.

If there were only 2 entries, would they say first place is only the "top 50%" and exclude the winner?

I agree with you the number should include the total number of entries regardless if they a got a flight in or not. I am working with the NASA group to come to a firm decision on how they determine who gets an invite.

If there are two entries the winner who takes first place would get a invite, if there is only one entry they would get an invite.

Your line of thinking is correct.

By the prevailing logic, if there are one, two, or three entries, the winner has still not cracked the "top 30%".  Out of three entries, the winner is only in the top 33.3%, not the top 30.

The way I see, and the way the serves MY purpose, is to define it by ranges.
Thus with five entries the winner is in the top 20% and second place is in the 21% to 40% range, which falls within the top 30%.
With four entries the winner would be in the top 25% and second place would be 26% through 50% so second place would still qualify.

This contest will take five days of my time, and more for those who live more than a day's drive from the venue.  With that much invested the prospective contestants need some direct communication with management.
