how many laps Per tank are the OS 18's getting on the 60 ft lines??? and for the 7.5 heat

Bill Lee and I hold the record with an OS 18. I think it's 154 laps, but you can look it up. If I remember correctly, we get 43-46 laps per tank. Bill Lee can set me straight if it's different than that.

Yes, 60 feet. It's actually 150 laps; I looked it up.

Yes, 150 laps in 7.5 minutes. 1 ounce tank, 45+/- laps per tank. Air speed right around 18-flat, perhaps a bit better. Usually three pit stops plus a start, all have to be good.

with Bill's help, I was able to get my Nelson RIRE clown project to 80+ mph and 99 laps. It wasn't as serious a project as this one but the fuel assistance from Bill took it into the record area after we figured out the heat management.

Looks like 80mph at 99 laps would yield right around 148-150 laps on 52' lines.

99 laps is a waste of fuel. You would be flying 50 laps after the race. It would be better to go for 80 laps and more speed. Then you could get 160 laps with an even two tankfuls.

(Good grief, the errors in the original post! I'm amazed Walt hasn't called me on it! :-) )

Quite true, Paul. In order to get 160 laps at 80/tank, you will have to have a Clown running at about 18.8 for 7laps.

Assume 5 seconds lost on first lap, 15 seconds lost for a pit stop (an EXCELLENT pit stop!) leaves 215 seconds for 80 laps (Oops! Originally said 5 instead of 15.)

7.5 minutes is 450 seconds
450 - 5 - 15 = 430 for the airtime for two tanks
430 / 160 = 2.6875 seconds/lap
18.8125 seconds for 7 laps

18.8 for 80 laps is a TOUGH combination!

The way to get more laps is to go faster AND further at the same time.

As simple as Clown seems to be, it is a tough event to master.

Except when you only fly in your own imagination!

PS: The only way to correctly measure the effect of the start and/or a pit stop is to measure the 7-laps from a standing start or 7-laps with a pit stop in the middle, and then subtract a 7-lap time at normal speed. The result is what the start or the pit stop "cost" you. Takes all of the factors (decelleration, actual on-the-ground time, accelleration) into account.

sorry for the bad info guys. After the help from Bill, it was 89 - 90 mph with the 99 laps. That was the best we could get from the project. I think it started out around 79 mph at 60 laps but running an open faced RIRE has its challenges.
The prop it seemed to like best was an APC 6.5 x 5? been several years. When it was right, it seemed to be pretty strong, when it was not it was awful.
