Dope with metallic appearance
« on: October 16, 2016, 08:20:13 PM »
There was a plane at the GSSC with a incredible looking blue & silver paint job. I asked if it was auto paint and the owner said dope. I failed to ask if the color has the metallic flake or the clear coat.
Does the metal flake go in the color and then cover with clear? Or vice versa?

Thanks
Mike

Depends on the approach. You can shoot color then put the flake in the clear, but you will need the flake to be the color you want to match or complement the base color. You can put flake in the color then top with clear coat but the effect will be different. Or you can put the flake in a base coat (like gold or silver) and use a candy or other transparent color over the top of that then add clear to the top. Each gives a different effect. Sort of depends on what you want. I've done all three with both pearls and flake. You can get some interesting effects.

Then it had some silver trim. The blue and silver had a fine metal quality. Really looked nice.
And so did the other planes there.

The blue on Chris' Defiant is a metallic auto color (Mazda I think) that our paint guy mixed up.  We use the acrylic toner and mix it with clear dope to get the required amount.  I used the same method for the metallic orange (Hot Lava) Toyota color for my Divergent.

I wasnt convinced he was talking about Chris' airplane since he mentioned blue and silver, Chris' paint scheme looks blue white and pink to me,

Well, you can do it the EASY way and just have your auto paint guy mix up the color without binder.   ;D

OK, I'll admit it. I'm color blind, at least to the FAA and the Navy.
So you mix acrylic toner with clear dope?
This is where I go back to searching what that entails!!

Thanks

Mike,

You can get an auto paint store to mix up any color you have a number for. Just have them not put in the binder. Generally, they mix up how ever many toners it takes to make the color then complete the mix by adding what is usually urethane binder. Just have them leave that out and instead, when you get home, put in the requisite amount of clear dope. There are some caveats with that. Like if the color you want is a metallic or pearl or whatever and that metallic or whatever comes in a carrier (rather than just flake or pearls in dry form). The carrier probably has a urethane base. Best to ask your paint guy.

That's how I do it, anyway.

Hi Mike - I used Mazda "Winning Blue - Metallic".  The metallic is part of the toner, as purchased from the auto paint store.  Just add to clear dope, and thin as needed to spray.  Super easy.

Hi Chris,
I thought your plane was stunning. Too pretty to fly.
Do you recall the ratio of toner to dope? I have been searching here and it seems like 25% toner 75% dope and then thinned.

Thank you

Mike

  Mike,
I know of a couple ways to shoot metaflake,, the first way is use a flake gun & if you google " flake buster" ( I think)  videos of shooting it  on will come up another way is put the flake in clear & shoot the clear on . On our models I believe you will find both to be really heavy,  my last metalflake work  I   shot the color then put a touch of flake in the clear shot it then clear coated over both.   This gave me the correct color & in the sun there is just enough flake for it to explode .
  Good luck,  John

just so we are all on the same page, metalflake is like what you find on a Bass Boat, big sparkly flakes,, more commony people mean metallic which is smaller, like you see on cars. There is a diffefence in how you spray them too, metal flake is sprayed through a special gun because of the size... metallic is mixed with the base color and sprayed through a normal gun.

I just thought of something.

The Nail Polish industry sells what they call "Powder."

I've seen this on nails before. The "Powder" is fine and I believe it is mixed with clear then sprayed with an airbrush. Not sure about that it could be brushed?

I won't Google it because I have no interest.

But for those that do....,

Now if you look at the ARGO Spectre 007, you will see metallic silver sprayed over black at the canopy area. This is artists airbrush paint sprayed right out of the bottle with an airbrush.

Covers well and larger areas could be sprayed also.

Charles
