DC-540 and carbon
« on: October 30, 2016, 02:52:01 PM »

    Good evening all !

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on using the DC 540 primer directly over Carbon veil?  I have a SV 11 ARF that I want to cover and get off my building table and I'm trying to get back in the game after about 10+ years . At  The moment the wings are covered in heavy silkspan  since it's all I had laying around.  The fuselage is yet to be covered but does have multiple coats of dope.  Can I use the primer over the  over the carbon or does the fuselage need to be silkspaned ?

   TIA
     Steve

Hi Steve,

I didn't have a problem using DC-540 over carbon when I painted my SV-11. I just built up the finish like you normally would before getting to the primer stage and you should be fine.

If you're talking about attaching the carbon veil with the DC-540 I would say don't try it or you'll have a heck of a mess. Just put the veil on normally with a coat or two of 50/50 clear and then you'll be safe enough to go to your DC-540 after that.

I just recovered an SV-11 arf. The fuse got 5 coats of 50/50  nitrate dope. The Carbon veil went on great. Followed up with 2 more coats of the same and a coat of talcum loaded dope to help fill in the weave. Waited 2 weeks in my truck to gas off. Primer was Klasskote and 1 coat of Klasskote colors.
