My profile Oriental is ready to fly.  It was primed with DC 540, painted with Randolph Dope and followed by one coat of 2K auto clear (Nason).  It came out at 43 ounces, of course heavier than I wanted, but I had problems getting the yellow dope to cover the grey primer.  I'm sure I did something wrong, but I hope to sort it out on the next one.  At least it is fuel PROOF!!!

I learned the hard way about trying  to paint over the gray primer. I love the stuff, but...So I now use Dupli-color automotive primer. Sandable. Part # DAP 1689 White Primer  (this on the price label).
I dries fairly hard, so sanding must take place as soon as it dries.  I does not sand as easily as the gray, but it does sand and leaves a smooth coating and just as dusty..
OR you can spray a very light, thin coat of white over the gray and seal that with clear, then apply your lighter colors, ie, white, yellow orange, pale blues, etc.

I've been using a white primer that a fellow modeler turned me on to. I've mentioned it in my build threads.

That's really a nice looking model with a good color choice. Could put something on the rudder? Initials?   

Hi Don. I'm glad to see the Oriental is ready to fly. Are you going to maiden it before next weekend? Our meeting is on the 19th.

When I painted my last plane with white DC lacquer over gray DC 540, I could see the gray through some places. I sanded it back off and tried the Duplicolor DUP1689 white primer, expecting it to be the same as the DC 540, but it was not. I didn't hurry to sand it like Ty suggests, and it turned hard as a rock. At the time I wondered if it was a reaction with the remnants of the original coat of 540 that made it harden, but all I know is I might as well have been trying to sand epoxy. It wouldn't budge. Big mistake. On the up-side, it didn't take much white lacquer to cover it back up. And my scales told me it was lighter than before, so what could have been a disaster worked out okay after all. I still have that can of white stuff, so I'll play with it on a test board if I ever decide to try it again.

We used to scratch up K&B Epoxy with 220 to spray another color.

Scratches would disappear and you would get a great edge. A bit thick, but clean. 
Epoxy paints set up fast.

Best product K&B made was their primer.

Can you fly off the grass with the wheel pants?

I've used the same wheels (Maxx Lite) and wheel pants on several of my planes and they have all flown off grass (Triple Tree, Brodak's and Watt Moore's field) with no problems.  Of course, it does help if the grass is short.  Some take off rolls have been a bit longer than I want just to get up to speed, but they have never exceeded a quarter lap.  Also, the wheel pants can be removed in a few minutes and wheels installed with standard wheel collars if necessary.
