World Champs Australia
« on: April 19, 2016, 04:36:43 PM »
  Hi Folks,
Just wondering who has made plans to come out here for the world champs in Perth during May?

I have taken long service leave for 3 weeks to ride my motorcycle across from the east coast with my mate Mark Gordon (also a member here).

We're meeting up with a couple of guys who are flying over and renting a house in Perth for the week to take in the action, then taking a few extra days heading home around the coast roads to take in the sights.

As I have never travelled further west than Adelaide and that it's pretty rare to see the worlds held down here, it's shaping up to be the trip of a lifetime!

Hope to meet some of you there..

 Cheers, Rob.

I wish! Not in the bankbook, however. Be sure to say "G'day" to Paul Walker and David Fitzgerald. I don't know the other bloke, but I hear he's a nice fella too.  y1 Steve

PS: I was in Goulburn NSW in '83 for the World FF Champs. Was in Canberra the day the Ozzies won the yachting thingo. Fun times!

The U.S. team website is at http://www.2016CLWC.org. You can see the list of the team and supporters there.

The World Champs website is at http://www.cl-wch2016per.org/ Lots of information there. If all goes as planned, you will be able to watch the results there in near real time.

Our CL club here in St Louis, MO was honored to have the USA speed team attend our annual speed contest in preparation for the World Championships. This picture has the following people (left to right).

Carl Dodge (current F2A champion)
Ivan Valishev (Junior)
Alex Valishev
Bill Hughes
Chris Montagino

the model that Carl is holding is the model he flew in the 72, 76 and 82 world championships. Notice how the format of the model has changed over the years.

I would be there if the lottery officials would draw my name/number.   But then again the long flight.  It was bad enough flying to and back from Hawaii. LL~ LL~

Back in the 70s, I once made the grand tour: Perth, Melbourne, Sidney,  Brisbane. It's a pretty country. Have fun, guys.

I will be there, flying F2B and F2D.  :)

Flight will be a killer, ~15 hours to Hong Kong then another 8 to Perth  :o
Paid extra for exit row seats, so we can at least stretch out a bit.
Also have a pair of active noise cancelling ear buds. Not cheap but worth it.
Already tried them on a 10 hour flight going to/from Dubai for the WAG, they make a huge difference.

   Thanks Guys,

The flight will be a killer alright Pat, I'm pretty sure my butt will be cursing me after three and a half 10 hour days riding across the Nullarbor plain :'(.

Randy, I reckon you'd hardly recognise the place after 40 years. The major cities have changed a lot.

As a kid my dream was always to get to Europe for a World champs or to the U.S for the Nats. This is probably shaping up to be just as epic and should be a good motivator to get back into finishing the Strega that's sitting on the bench waiting for covering.

The Brits have similar times Pat.  We have my mate Peter Tindal and wife here who flew into Sydney on 14th April after 24 hrs from Heathrow.  Holidaying up east coast of NSW to get them acclimatised  ;) before a week at home for him to have a bit of practice then a 4 1/2 hr flight on 1st May Sydney-Perth.  See you there!

Hi Steve!  I "won" the job of team manager this time. With a team of 58, I'm kept busy.....

Haven't flown F2B for a couple of years, but I've been doing a fair bit of judging, up to Nats level.  Been flying some FF, though - just fun stuff, nothing serious.

Haven't had many serious training options so far this year.
Hoping the training facilities in Perth are OK.

Hi Bruno,

we have hail storms this week :)
My practise this year for the WC was always wearing ski-clothing with hardly any day above 5°C.
This weekend  was test-packing my box and now fighting against my free luggage weight limit. Somehow things are heavier than I thought.  :)

See you next wek!

A few shots of the field , before ' the developments ' belive the F2B circles are eithe9 Both ) ends of the runway , T/R set up is over past here, just . ( top L.H. )

Coasts behind yor back , Sydneys 2000 or thereabouts over there , if you had good eyes .

its pretty much flat , thereabouts . ( y' can see on the site map , the runway .
Though at Dalby , thyed say theres a hill , as if you left your handbrake off , and it was in neutral , and there was a breeze , your car MIGHt just roll along a little back over by the motor museum  .

Its Not quite as damp as England , :##

Id think it'd be a good deal greener than the picture , with ' works ' progressed considerably , as the pictures dated .

By the look of the amount of Kangas in the west of Australia Pat they can stay here! They'd eat us out on the east coast.  There must be a hundred or so every afternoon somewhere near the practice site in one field alone.   Four years back on my only drive to the west you had to look out for kangas and emus across the plain which seemed to go on forever.  The only strike was an emu which luckily only caught the corner of the caravan.

Was great to meet you Pat as well as the other Canadians.

Yes, we have already had "discussions" with Mr. Bond.

Yes, the conditions were......Interesting..
If you didn't like them you only had to wait a few minutes for change.
There was absolute dead air, dead air with variable gusts, mix in a little perfect air, then some more dead air, and then some fair wind.  oops, forgot the heavy drizzle...and guess, in the irony of it all, who got the rain...yes, the guy who flew in Seattle for all those years.   You think he would have done better in it that almost crash....along with his second score.......oh well....The world champs are coming in a few days and the rain today is giving us a nice day off.

Stay tuned.

I'm curious, when flying in an FAI event, are you glow engine pilots using zero nitromethane fuel? If so, does that pose any trouble adapting, or is that what you tune your engines and practice with here in the US? Or are you all flying on electrons?

Upon reflection Having the World Champs here, in may can be risky business. Perth is well known for having the fiercest storms come through in May. Acutally where I live, South of Perth has the nickname of 'Tornado Alley'. At least one or two houses lose their roofs in the storms (Winds in excess of 160kph, at steel framed roofs make for some light wing loadings!).

Still, with that said, the rest of the time the flying is glorious. Not to hot, not too cold, a little puff of wind here and there.

Hope you guys are enjoying your day off.

I'm curious, when flying in an FAI event, are you glow engine pilots using zero nitromethane fuel? If so, does that pose any trouble adapting, or is that what you tune your engines and practice with here in the US? Or are you all flying on electrons?

Rusty

AFAIK only the pure " horespower" FAI events use 0% nitro : F1C free flight, F2A speed and F3? pylon racing.
F2D combat uses 10% nitro.
Pretty sure all other classes are "run what you brung"
(You can buy the nitro, methanol and oil from the organizers. Also whatever weird and dangerous chemicals the team race guys use  ;))

Having said that , our only non-electron F2B flyer is running 0%, but with synthetic oil.

Congratulations to Orestes, World Cup champion!

Good luck to all three of you in the big event!! PJ says you are all flying very well, not that I would expect any less... I hope you guys can lock up the top three spots.

I think it is great they have a contest before the worlds to give those wanting to compete to warm up before the FAI Worlds Champs.   Congrats to our team and especially Orestes. H^^

Sounds like Orestes is definitely on his "game".  Best of luck to all the American Team and best wishes for a "good time" for all.  Wish I could be there.
