...wing jigs...
« on: February 18, 2017, 05:02:03 PM »

I picked up an adjusto   jig and wanted to see who else uses one and how do you like it?

Do you have any suggestions/advice on using one?

          Thanks

The only wing jig I use, 25 plus years.. Good jig

I do not use the rib drill out fixture, just draw a centerline in rib, mark the holes by measuring  from rear of rib  and cut  individual  holes .

I've used the Adjust-O-Jig for years. One of the best ideas ever.

A couple of things you may wish to do to yours to make it even better.
1) Unless you plan to build dihedral wings make sure you lock the bottom bar at the hinge. A simple way to do this which allows you to change back to standard for building dihedral wings is to install a metal bar that is locked to the bottom bars using bolts. Easy to remove it needed yet very solid otherwise.
2) get some "thinserts" And install them in the galvanized pipe. The threads in the thin wall pipe will rip out  if you over tighten the pipe bolts.
3) Since many of the models we build will have fairly long ribs you will want to make up a number of extensions to allow you to create a third line jig jig holes in the wing to support them. I used 1/8 plywood sticks 1/2" high and 7" long. Three holes drilled along the center line at 2" intervals allow you to suspend a third rod out in space. This helps keep everything properly aligned.

I've been using Ajusto-Jigs For over 25 years.  It's the only jig I use except Hunts Lost Foam Jigs.

I strongly recommend mounting the Jig on a piece of 3/4 inch plywood and screwing two long pieces of heavy angle iron to the bottom.  This makes the jig much steadier to work on and prevents warping of the base that can make it unsteady.  I also caution you not to tighten the end screws that allow the jig to rotate. too much or the plastic can break!

I also recommend not using the drill templates for rib positioning  they wear out quickly and then the holes in the ribs can be too loose and/or misplaced.  The method I use that works very well is to carefully stack the ribs together according to a common reference like the trailing edge if the trailing edge is straight or spar notches if they are aligned and pin the ribs together by driving T-pins through the ribs (from both sides if necessary).  Mark the location of the necessary locating holes on the outside rib (I do this by holding the last rib against one of the rib locators on the jig).  Then drill the jig wire holes with a drill Press.  If the pins interfere with getting the ribs to lay flat simply use a piece of hardwood or flat plywood with holes drilled where the pins are located, on the drill press and place the ribs on the wood with the pins over the holes.
Do all of this very carefully and you will have a very nice straight wing.

Thanks.

I have a line on two adjusto-jigs, but they are missing the rods.

They're just 5/32nd music wire.  I've replaced a couple of them on one of mine due to rusting.  They're usually available at the local hobby shop, or Michaels!

Some of the straightest wing that I have built were done with out a jig.  Using straight pins, rubber bands and tape.  The advent of CA is what really helps to a point.

That concept could be duplicated for $60~$70 in materials.   Using 5/16" arrowshafts would only need 3 supports per wing panel instead of supports between every rib.

Well yes but I think you would be losing one of the best features of the Ajusto Jig, which is the fact that the all wing ribs are held tightly in three axis throughout the build including the application of the sheeting of the LE and TE.

I agree that the materials should not cost more than about $60 maybe considerably less.  If the materials were purchased in advance for 20 or so Jigs I would think it could be considerably less!  Most of the Jig could be built from plywood except the main tube that holds the rib supports and it's just 1" aluminum tube, and the jig rods which are 5/32 music wire!

You should check out the pictures of the wing jig in Mike Griffin's vendor corner (Griffin Building Service).

What Mike is showing is my rendition of an Adjust-O-Jig. The uprights extend above and below the ribs so all you have to do is turn the jig upside down in order to finish the wing. Like all jigs it is designed to keep the leading and trailing edges on the same plane through out the building process. It may not be pretty or sparkle or cost an arm and a leg ....BUT IT WORKS!

Seriously, I like the  concept. Do you sell these.I looked on your web site and could not find it.

Windy had aluminum end pieces, drilled and glued to a piece of marble......used 3/8" stainless rods.....always waxed the rods....there are videos with the process.

Have fun!
