I'm not so sure it was fake.  They have ways to stabilize things like Segways and hoverboards. It does look doubtful.

But at least he had the brains to fly over water and have a chance to live.

The Flyboard hooks up to a Personal watercraft (PWC) to use the PWC water as a jet to gain lift.  The board is connected via a hose.  I think the video is heavily edited to nearly "fake".
