Hope they are having better weather than I'm having.  Nothing like lawn chairs blowing across the yard and gate that I finally wired shut.

Sorry about photos, I was busy today as ED for Old Time Ignition.  I'll try to be more astute tomorrow and get some pictures of the other OT events.  OT Ignition finished today and I wish I could tell you who won that but it also will have to wait until tomorrow as I did not see the score board before I left today...sorry!

Weather today was great.  A little chilly this morning for us "old desert rats" early this morning at 54 degrees but warmed up quick to about 74 by 9AM with a high of 77 this afternoon.  Very light winds this morning at 2-4 mph and about 4-6 mph around noon.  Most of the contest flying was done by noon and quite a bit of Classic practice after that.  More OT flights tomorrow.

Overall turnout was fairly light as it has been for the past several years.  Everybody is getting old I guess and doesn't feel like traveling.

This still is a great contest with usually very good weather and a lot of Comraderie...Everyone should try seriously to make it in the future
Before we all get too old to continue it!!!   It's a great effort and sacrifice for the guys that do all the work and organization like Jim Hoffman (who does a terrific job as organizer and CD, John Callentine who usually handles the money situation etc. and a host of other Cholla Choppers members who do the manual labor of set up etc.  I would guess it's a bit discouraging for all that the turn out is falling.

Of course I understand a lot of you guys are busy shoveling snow and fighting the cold winds but I can't imagine that it's more fun than flying at VSC!!!  LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

Joe has become an extremely good flyer. And he knows how to trim planes which helps a lot. He works hard at it and I believe has a lot of natural talent when it comes to control line. Other than that, he is just real nice fellow and fun to be with. One of my favorite control line people among many. Congratulations Joe, and do your best in classic. I think there will be a lot of people in Tulsa rooting for you.

Joe is a great guy, and I'm certain that he will eventually receive this great honor, but there are many who are also just as deserving who have been supporting VSC and CL in general a lot longer than Joe has. Again, he'll have his day in the sun as KOF...

Aside from hearing that Joe won OT with his Ringmaster, Jim's pictures were the first were able to view other results.

Believe it or not, Tom, Channel 2 wasn't there and we didn't get much ESPN coverage either.

Quite literally there are almost enough people in the clubs that put on the event now to cover the necessary judging and running and tabulating and thats it, some doing double duty as flying too in other events. The CD's flew two events each. Past event winners were judging Classic. The event doesn't get the attendance it once did, most people are in their 70's and 80's. There is a percentage in their 40's and 50's but it's not a huge number so doesn't bring the crowd of the 90's or 2000's. The guys that used to come and take pics weren't there, even SoCal and Phoenix attendance was lacking.
I took two pictures on my phone, one of a guy in his late 30's model from SoCal that brought a Sky Scraper (Steve, sorry I've forgotten your last name) that was done really well and he couldn't enter because he couldn't get days off from work but drove over for the weekend. We found him a banquet ticket and hopefully he'll be able to replace one of the old timers that don't fly anymore in the future. The other picture was Mark Gerber's Hurricane.

The first VSC was in 1989, I was 30. The rules were supposed to be a rolling 30 years and they were changed sometime after that first event to the end of 1969. That meant that a lot of guys were going to get old and die that had favorite models in that era and someone else was going to have to come up with a new event eventually that included the younger set's favorite models. I was born in 1958, yeah I love Billy's Ares but all the big kids going off to Viet Nam were the one's that had that kit and I graduated in 1977 from high school. So now Whitely's Derringer is okay in Super 70's but that's 38 years old and remember I was 33 years old when I was Rookie of the Year at the 1992 Nats in Mass. In other words, the rolling 30 was the best idea for nurturing a group of young Stunt modelers to continue building and flying models of the same age historically. Unintended consequence? Maybe, but done with definite reason, Mike Keville's being that he hated models like Gene Schaffer's Stunt Machine and Bob Hunt's Genesis because of their stick shapes. I thought they were cool.
Bill Lee was doing the pull test in Circle 3 and I asked him what he thought of C/L 's chances and he said we are the last generation of C/L flyers. I hope not but I could see his point.
Hope to see you out here next year, Tom.

A thank you everyone that posted pictures and report about VSC,  the VSC is a great event that everyone needs to have on their bucket list . I wish it was a little closer to the east coast, but the  road trip is a big part of the appeal to me .

The  ensure coverage of the event in social media is just too much to ask from a contest director or  members of the local club  that puts on a event of this size. They just get spread too thin .

I do not know what the answer is to get  better coverage , But we need to find more people like Elwin Aud that enjoy photography as much as flying , and buy them lunch every once in a while .

I will never forget my first trip to VSC.  Had wife and youngest daughter with me.  Seeing the scenery on the trip was worth the trip and a couple of stops like the space museum in Toolarosa and White Sands.  Then getting to meet a whole bunch of people I had only read about.   Then there was this lady running around taking pictures and wanted a pic of my classic plane.  So I slid the broken wings up on each side of the fuselage.  Later years I learned this crazy lady was the fabulous Rikki Pyatt,  such a sweet lady.  The second year I drove out by myself because I heard Bob Palmer and Dale Kirn were going to be there.  Got to see Joe Kirn fly the Thunderbird on monoline.  I manage to make it every year until the hip got to hurting too bad and once it was done it was the knees.  Now its old age in a way.  But I still want to be back and LORD willing I will be as there is a great group of guys and gals out there.  By the way I did get pictures of every pilot and his plane except for the late Bob Geiski one year.  Don't know if Robin still has the disc my son made of the pictures.  Maybe I will just drive out next year with the digital camera and an extra card and just take pictures.

My apologies for not posting pictures.

I took a lot at the appearance judging session and some at the contest but simply haven't had time to process them out of the camera since then.

Had surgery done on my right hand the day after the contest and it hampered my ability to lift anything or even type for a couple of days.  Still painful to do very much with the hand but getting better.

I'll try to give the camera a shot tomorrow.

One of the pictures shows, from a distance, the ignition grass circle.  Hardly any activity there!  Score board does show 4 or 5 entries in ignition event.  My goodness!  A far cry from previous years' activity.

One of the pictures shows, from a distance, the ignition grass circle.  Hardly any activity there!  Score board does show 4 or 5 entries in ignition event.  My goodness!  A far cry from previous years' activity.

Yes entries in Ignition have steadily declined over the past several year but entries in all the other events have also declined.

It is interesting to note that everyone entered in OT Ignition posted scores in at least one flight and some very good scores were flown.

The folks that flew this year were serious and all knew what they were doing.  Engines runs were for the most part very good and consistent!

That fact is a far cry from some of the past years!  OT ignition is in my opinion the toughest of all the events at VSC and these guys deserve a lot of credit for doing it the "Hard Way"!

Try it and you'll soon see what I mean!

I agree that ignition can be very challenging, but also loads of fun. Just when you think you have everything worked out, something can still bite you. Most have figured out what works and what does not work, and which engines have the best longevity and running characteristics for stunt. Many of these old engines will put out way more power that many think. My Anderson Spitfire will turn a 13-6 and pull my 64 ounce Taurus with 800 square inches just fine running in a 2-4 break.

I do understand that many do not want to stray from the regular pattern and the tinkering that can go with ignition. But the rewards can be great when you get that perfect engine run. There is just nothing like the sound of a sparker running through the pattern. Rusty Brown got me hooked years ago, and I have never lost the spark. Pun intended.

The other thing is that there are not to many fields you can fly at with the noise these thing generate. But I still love the darn things just because of the unique designs that engine builders did back in the 30's and 40's. They were the pioneers of what we have today.

I can tell you I sure missed being there. Most of the guys are willing to trade info to help each other out more than any other event. The comradery is the best. I looked at the scores and all did very well. Congratulation to all who flew.
