The aches and pains will fade away but the smiles and memories will last!
We had a perfect weather day and a good turnout for yesterdays Vintage Combat Plane Fun Fly. The atmosphere was very laid back and everyone got to fly as much as they wanted to. All of the action took place on one circle at the legendary GSCB field. We don't keep records but it seemed like there was greater diversity in the types of aircraft that flew this year compared to past years. Among the 'never seen before' planes were a Berkely Lancer, two Hornets, Count Clipper and something Ken Cook had that I can't remember the name of. Other notable planes were two WOW's, two Half-Fast's, a Ringmaster, Up-N-Atom, Combat Cat and several Voodoo's. I have probably forgotten a few. Since many of us are disciples of LS there was no shortage of his planes in the air! No fewer than four Killers, three Super Satans and a Blitz were wrung out. Although most of the powerplants came from Fort Smith there were also two McCoy .35's, an OS .35S, five ST .35's and my G-15 powered Jr. Satan. I didn't get a speed timing on that one but, on 52' lines it certainly had me wishing it would run out of gas sooner than it did! It also handled very well. The Fox representation was excellent as almost all of the Combat Special series motors were either flown or on the field. This would cover the range from the 1957 CS right through the 36x BB. The Brian Gardner ABC engines made a good showing with at least four of them in the air including Al Ferraro's 127mph Super Satan!
We were all a bit disappointed that Jim Vigani's Double Diamond was not able to challenge Al's run due to a loose elevator. Next year Jim!! Another letdown was not getting to see Roy Glen's new Sneeker/ .36x ABC get properly thrashed. The maiden flight revealed a bit of a warp so he wisely decided to fix it first. A similar case was JimVigani's Lancer. He did a beautiful job on it and powered it with a nice 36x but the maiden voyage revealed a modest but noticeable warp so he also did the 'mature' thing and decided to take it home to the lab for trimming.
The speed challenge was informal as well. Anyone who held their plane down and level got a watch, or several watches, on them. Here's the rundown; Al Ferraro Super Satan 36x BBABC APC 8x8 40% 127mph
T. Schaefer Voodoo 36x BBABC APC 8x9 50% 122.4
T. Luciano Super Satan 36x BBABC APC 8x8 ? 119
F. Imbriaco Scrambler 36x BBABC ? 117.5
A. Ferraro Hornet McCoy .35 Tornado 8x8 10% 93.5
T. Schaefer Killer Fox Rocket .40 TF 9x7 93
J. Vigani Up-N-Atom 36x APC 8x7 91.25
E. Evon Hornet OS 35S 9x7 76.75
This has been a super fun event for 4 years now and we hope to keep it going as long as there is interest. Since it is difficult to fly this type of plane at many fields we are really grateful to Tom Hampshire and the GSCB for hosting and providing the perfect venue. The Fun Fly is a fabulous opportunity to come out and fly or just watch/listen/smell these hot rods of 50 years ago do their best to screw a 50 year older pilot right into the ground!! Till next year, C.T. Schaefer
