We just had a new motel open in Catoosa, about 5 miles from the field. I don't have all the info yet but stopped in a couple days ago and they told me the rates were $59 - $69.00 which is better than anything else around. The really neat thing I like about it is if you get a room on the lower level you can drive and park right up to the door of your room. Will post more info when I can, the owner is suppose to call me and see if we can get any special rates for our contest weekends.

That's good news, Bob! I will book a room as soon as you have more info.

All:

Saturday's meet will emphasize fun, sport flying, fellowship, and food. We Gluedobbers have three circles at our flying field, and at least two of them should be open for sport flying your planes anytime. (One will need to be used for the "Fastest Plane" and "Top Gun" event for a spell.) No "organized" combat is planned for Saturday. However, if two of you want to tie on steamers and go at it... reckon' that's okay?

We will have a display area for those that brought planes to display for the "Best Vintage" and "Best Replica" planes to enter. The "best" of both classes will be determined by popular vote, and not a judging committee.

By "Best Vintage", it simply means a surviving vintage combat plane from "back in the day". You can clean it up as best you can... or leave it covered with dust for "authenticity"!  ;D

"Best Replica" is a vintage design recently built. If you bring a replica of an obscure model that wasn't Nationally published, some form of documentation would be helpful (such as a vintage photo/etc).

We intend to provide stick-on name tags so we all can see at a glance "who's who"... after all... some of us don't look like we used to look "back in the day"!!!

We've served notice to Riley and Bobby both, to be ready to sign stuff. (We'll provide the Sharpie's for them!) I'm bringing my old Voodoo kit for Riley to sign, and may have him sign my "Demon" that I'll have there. Bobby is probably going to have to sign a T-shirt or hat, or sumpthin' for me!  It is expected that other past combat Nationals attendee's and Nat's champs will also be present and they will be fair game for signing things too! (I'm going to keep my own Sharpie in my pocket for just that reason!)

The Gluedobbers field is one of the easiest flying fields to find on the planet. Hit our website to get directions to it.

Make plans now to come on out and have a great time with us as we celebrate our combat history!

Andre

If you are going to fly at the Combat Reunion, an AMA license is required.

You will be able to join the AMA out at Reeves field on the day of the Reunion.

Hi All:

For those of you that are intending to be a part of the Gluedobbers 75 MPH Combat event on Sunday, October 9th, below you will find additional information!

* Entry Fee: $15

* Pilots meeting: 9 AM.

* Streamers will be provided by the contest management.

* Awards to the first 3 places.

Below is a link to the AMA Combat Rules pdf file that will detail the various general requirements for Slow Combat. Following the link below will be the additional/amended portions pertinent to the Gluedobbers 75 MPH Combat event on Sunday, October 9.

The link:

https://www.modelaircraft.org/files/2015-2016CLCombat.pdf

The amendments:

CONTROL LINE SLOW COMBAT FOR EVENT 329.

1. General. Applicability, equipment, purpose, rules, procedures, and judging are the same as CL Combat, except as specified below.

2. Aircraft Specifications.

    a. Any aircraft configuration is allowed.
    b. Engines will have a maximum displacement of .40 c.i.
    c. Any fuel system is allowed.
    d. Carburetors must be fixed. Changing “throttle” while airborne, any form, is not allowed.

3. Procedure. A kill (i.e. cutting the string leader so that no portion of the streamer remains) does not end the match. Either or both competitors may score a kill in the same match. Not more than one (1) kill may be scored by one (1) competitor in a match. Once both strings have been cut, at a signal from the judge, both fliers must fly level and counterclockwise. The fliers shall fly level and counterclockwise in such a manner as to avoid midair collisions, near misses, etc. 4. Scoring. A kill counts 100 points.

4. Models will be timed at the first of the match. They may not run less than 7.3 seconds in two laps pulling a full streamer. If an airplane exceeds this mark it must be grounded and repaired to meet this specification before starting the combat match.  An aircraft maintaining the 7.3 seconds in two laps will continue receiving his airtime while his opponent is down repairing his aircraft.

5. Fuel shutoffs are not required, but may be used at pilots discretion.

It's been years since the Gluedobbers have hosted an honest-to-goodness Combat event... so come on out and let's give it a shot! Hope to see you there!

I plan on pulling in Saturday morn if the old Suburban doesn't let me down.   Have been getting engines running and planes dusted off.  Amazing how much dust accumulates just hanging on the hook.

Lessee'...

All planes loaded: Check

Flight box loaded: Check

Field tray loaded: Check

Fuel loaded: Check

Event stuff loaded: Check

All that remains is to load the clothing/weekend items tomorrow morning. Shortly after lunch time we ought to be heading out for the Gluedobbers field and should arrive early/mid afternoon.

Newly rejuvenated combat flier and one of our newest Gluedobber's, Randy Dailey, will be arriving tomorrow afternoon, as well as many of the rest of our Gluedobbers.

Received an email earlier tonight: The one and only Riley Wooten will be arriving tomorrow afternoon. I'm hoping he will come on out to the field tomorrow. Very much looking forward to meeting my youthful combat hero!

Bob Mears will be arriving late Friday afternoon... hope to meet him asap once he's on site. The Mears brothers are currently a couple of combat's best advocates.

Come Saturday morning, I hope to be groovin' to the sound of Fox, Johnson, Veco, Supertigre, McCoy, K&B... ??? engines churnin' n' burnin' on the noses of who knows what kinds of airplanes that are going to show up!  Got a feelin' many of the heavy hitter airplanes of combat will be represented.  Ah... gonna' be smelling that wonderful smell of castor and nitro again, too!

So, am I pumped?  YOU BET!!  Stoked, jazzed, use any superlative you want... I'm there!

OH... and did I mention....

THIS WILL BE EPIC?

If it ain't too late for you... 'ya GOTTA' get here one way or the other.

All I have to do is unload and reload the planes.  Then again I just may leave the Ringmasters in the vehicle.  Then it's pack the stuff I need and load my self.  Will set alarm to correct time, hopefully. H^^

Wow... it's HERE!  Very soon, it will be time to head out for the 1st ever Glueddober's Combat Legend Reunion!!!!

I went out to Reeves field to tie up some loose ends. Randy Dailey showed up and helped me drill holes in the ground for the dowels in the bottom of the 6 foot indicator  boards. Randy brought a very nice contest donation of an assorted Head Country barbecue sauce display  He also brought one photo display of his combat days in Ponca City Oklahoma in the late 1960's. Another display was of Bob Mears Combat museum in Lubbock, Texas, and some photos of the recent combat meet there.  (Lubbock: The home town of Buddy Holly)

I was finishing up the contest paperwork, and Andre Ming showed up and introduced himself to Randy.

They decided to fly.  Randy Dailey flew his Supertiger C-35 powered Zipper, and  Andre flew his Fox .36X powered  Demon. They turn nitromethane into noise quite nicely.

Tom Martin showed up, and brought Nathan's franks , hot dog buns and various fixings for the noon meal tomorrow and Sunday. Bob Reeves also put in an appearance.

We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Stay tuned...

We made it! As De said, met Randy, did some BS'n... helped a bit with some stuff... unloaded some event stuff... Randy and I wanted to fly.  So, out came one of his ST C35 powered ships... and soon enough it was fired up and into the air. Cool! Haven't heard a Supertigre in a long time. Sounded pretty good.

My turn.  Out comes the airplanes, selected my Demon, made a new bladder for it... time to unroll my lines and fire up.  Lessee... reach over to the field tray and get the handle/lines....

????

Um... where are the handle and lines? A quick, yet thorough, search in the flight box and field tray yielded no handles or lines.  Surely not. The handle/lines are ALWAYS in the field tray... but not this time.

Okay... let's review here. Last night I smugly typed:

All planes loaded: Check

Flight box loaded: Check

Field tray loaded: Check

Fuel loaded: Check

Event stuff loaded: Check

Hm. Somewhere in the above "Field Tray" operation I failed to notice a few somewhat "significant" ingredients missing: No handles/lines.

I hate the "Moron Factor".

And to be sure, the moron factor was in full swing as I have apparently left the handles/lines sitting God knows where in that disaster area known as my "hobby room".

So, there I sat at the 'Dobbers field all dressed up and nowhere to go. Of course, Randy graciously let me use his handle/lines to at least give the Demon a shake down run, but that's really not the answer for tomorrow.

I'm such a maroon!!

Ah well... I'll have many things to occupy my time tomorrow anyway!  Still though, having a high moron factor in me that has to be dealt with WAY too often sort of sucks at times!

Anybody got some .018" x 60' lines and a Hot Rock handle you can run over here to me?

I didn't think so.

Darn moron factor.

Don't be too hard on yourself, Mingster. You are just getting back to this and you have to get back into the swing of things. You have pitted near me at the ISDT Reunion Rides, and see what I bring to that affair in the way of extras and spares. Well I do the same for contests. ALWAYS bring spares of everything in case you or someone else needs something. It has saved my bacon and others several times!  I went all the way to Monetzuma, Iowa for one of the last SIG contests, and forgot to load my starter box! Just a small wood box with 12 volt battery, power panel, some pugs and a few tools. I use 6 foot leads on my glow clips so the box can be outside the circle, and after starting and pulling the leads, a simple toss and everything is clear for a launch. It's my routine, but I left my routine at home that weekend! But I had everything else, including soldering iron and solder and spare glow clips to make up a starter battery using D cell flashlight batteries. Lots of people offered me their stuff, but I just like having my own to avoid a lot of running around borrowing.
I was trying to plan on being there this weekend, and try to whip up some kind of vintage combat model, but never got enough momentum going on preparations. I never flew combat competitively, but like a lot of guys flew small 1/2A combat models for sport, and have several larger kits like the Voodoo, Winder, and Combat Kittens stashed away, not to mention LOTS of plans. Some of those built light with even a Fox.35 Stunt on the nose would be fast enough for me! You guys have lots oof fun, take and post lots of pictures, and maybe I'll make it next time.
   Type at you later,

Just got back to the motel room.

We counted thirty-something folks in attendance. About twenty or so airplanes in the "Best" events. Many more airplanes were in attendance if you count the ones that were flown but NOT entered in the "Best" categories.

Best Vintage:

There were only 2 "Best Vintage" entries, and one of those got crashed during an event! However, the one that remained truly deserved the "Best Vintage": A "Spoiler" built/flown/competing way back in 1968!  It was brought by our own ('Dobber dude) Randy Dailey and was a gift from a widow of one of Randy's best flying buddies. It is fitting it won. Randy donated it to the Bob Mears Museum of Combat where it will be duly preserved with the facts concerning same.

Best Replica:

Tie for first place. 'Dobber dude Randy Dailey strikes again with an immaculate silk n' dope "Zipper" that was built just a few weeks ago. It was excellent. Also winning first place was Arlene Pyles with lavender w/polka dots "Renegade". She did an excellent job on it.

Second place went to yours truly and his Combat Cat.  I was surprised and had only put in the display area to be a "field filler". In the end that wasn't necessary because we ended up with several entries!

Getting ready to grab the girls (wife and grand daughter) and go eat some deelish Mexican food at a place we found last night. More later!

Notes to some of the above pics:

5th pic down...

That's Riley Wooten receiving the 1st Annual Gluedobbers "Combat Legend" award. De made the plaque and it included a replica of the engine Riley used to win his first Nationals in 1956. De got it right all the way down to the same brand/number of Champion glow plug! When we envisioned this event, we wanted to create an award to give to our pioneer combat "legends".  We are all fortunate that Riley is still with us and still cantankerous as ever! (In a good way!) Anyway, in addition to celebrating our (USA) combat heritage with our Combat Legends Reunion event, we also wanted to create an award, and each year select a "Combat Legend" to honor.  We somehow managed to keep this a surprise and Riley was indeed surprised! It was a great moment at our 1st Annual Combat Legends Reunion. In addition, we recognized all of the attendees that competed in combat at the Nationals, as well as recognizing attendees that won at the Nationals. It was a small way of giving them the recognition of accomplishing something that took a LOT of effort, and a LOT of talent (to win). Goals that many of us lesser talented guys only dreamed of. Our quick recognition "ceremony" we had together was the most rewarding time for me today of the entire event.

11th pic down...

That's 'Dobber dude Randy Dailey holding his ST 35 powered Zipper that he built just weeks ago, complete with a very nice silk n' dope finish. Randy's Zipper tied for first place in the "Best Replica" class.  We have a picture of Arlene Pyles and her 1st place "Renegade" that I'm sure Elwyn will eventually process and post.

Quick impressions:

The wow factor of having a goodly amount of combat enthusiasts on hand was awesome for sure. Super enjoyed Bob and Andy Mears' antics... they even flew some exhibition rounds of 75 MPH combat for us!  The Mears brothers really brought out the vintage ships and easily had the most at the event. It was SO COOL to hear them fly their Johnson Combat Special powered vintage combat planes!  We don't take the speed event nearly as serious as the East Coast Crazies do at the milestone GSCB Combat Festival... so the engines were stock and running on 10% nitro. That makes that 107.1 MPH that old Johnson pulled that Johnny Mears designed "Slingshot" even more impressive!  And did you see the speed the Johnson pulled that Sweet Sweep? The Sweet Sweep is a BIG airplane... but it was haulin' the mail big time!  I happened to be sitting beside Riley when Andy took to the air with his Johnson powered Slingshot. We sat there and watched that thing running PERFECT and Andy was burning up the air.  Riley made the comment "no wonder I liked Johnson's back in the day!" That aspect of a vintage combat reunion is SO neat: Seeing and hearing vintage powered replica planes doing their thing like they did back when they were "all that".

You should'a been here, cause...

The Combat Legends Reunion WAS EPIC!!!

Tomorrow: 75 MPH Combat.

It's my understanding that some contestants will be coming in for this event that are into combat, but not the vintage aspect of it. So, this will be a "state of the art" meet for 75 MPH combat. It's the first time in DECADES the 'Dobbers have hosted any kind of combat meet... so we're hoping we can step up to the plate and help Bob and Arlene in anyway we can as we see/learn what all is involved in it. Consider this a trial run!

All fer now!

Andre

Just got home. The Tulsa C/L Gluedobbers 1st Annual Combat Legends Reunion/Combat Sunday is now history!

WOW what a weekend!  As for Saturday's Combat Legends Reunion, here's a pic that shows part of the crowd attending:

We're pleased with the turnout for the first one!

As for today's Combat Sunday... more "WOW" stuff!  Over the next couple days or so I hope to do a field report for the event, but for now, here's the results for the 75 MPH Combat Event as well as some quick impressions:

1st: Andy Mears  W L W W
2nd: Bob Mears W W L W L
3rd: Cary Minor L W W L
4th: Rod Christie L W L
5th: Joe Gilbert (yup, you read right!) L L

More detail in my upcoming field report, but I will say that we saw some EXCELLENT matches!  Some of them were nigh 4 minute full-on multiple-cut brawls. EACH competitor had moments of brilliance IHMO. Kudos especially to Joe Gilbert for trying his hand at Combat. As far as I know, he had NEVER tried it before and he did NOT wrap lines or smack the ground, but instead flew pretty darn smart and mixed it up with some VERY good pilots. Way to go Joe, we 'Dobbers are proud of 'ya!  Also, a HUGE thanks to the Arlene Pyles and Bob Mears for being willing to come up to Dobberland and put on a great, relaxed, and FUN event. Though Andy was Top Dog this go around... the next one could be any one of the above Combat regulars!

All fer now!

In Elwyn's pictures, there is a picture of an L-19 Bird dog overflying the field. He put his left wing down and flew around the field in circles  like he was attached to lines in the center of the flying circle.

The pilot was one of our old Tulsa Gluedobber clubmembers.

Well the old DOC made it home some time after five.  Haven't down loaded my pics yet as I'm catching up on the computer doings.   Had a fantastic time and want to thank all involved for a great weekend and the great weather.  Seeing one of my heroes get a special award is a high light as well as getting to see him again.   Also getting to see a couple of gentlemen I only know through this forum.  I look forward the second annual vintage combat meet as well as the 75 MPH combat.  Especially thanks to those not mentioned that helped make this happen.  H^^

By the way hope to hear a good report on Bob Reeves who was taken to the hospital.  My prayers go out for him and his lovely wife.

Andre and Company:
 Nice job.
Gratifying to see this movement spreading around the country. Vintage combat is a wonderful  onslaught of nostalgia , emotions  and sensory  experiences.
The  guys of the Garden State Circle Burners and Middlesex Modelers  on the East coast have four well-attended, "good time" events in the bank and God willing, it will return for 2017. We now  have quite a few stunt  and racing guys coming out with beautiful ships on that day.
The camaraderie couldn't be better.

Doc:

Bob has been diagnosed with pneumonia and has been transferred to St. John's in Tulsa. We're all hoping and praying for a quick recovery so he can get back to being his cantankerous self!

Frank:

As you well know, the sights and sounds of vintage combat planes can be quite the rush.  Seeing the Mighty Mears brothers flying their Johnson-powered vintage planes convinced me that I GOTTA' get my Johnson's up and running and onto appropriate airplanes!  Those Johnson's SNARL! Wonderful sound.

All fer now!

I would like to thank all the Gluedobbers who helped out on Saturday.

Pat Reeves for tabulating.
Tom Martin for acquiring and cooking the food on Saturday and Sunday.
Tim Tipton, Lee Thiel, Joe McGilbra , Randy Dailey, and Joe Gilbert for help in setup, teardown,  and pull testing.
Elwyn Aud for taking pictures on Saturday and Sunday.
Walt Weatherford, for helping me judge both the Top Speed and Top Gun events.

I would also like to thank Randy Daily for donating a gallon of fuel, and an Oklahoma shaped wicker basket full of bottles of Head Country barbecue. This is a famous barbecue sauce made in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Randy also brought a display of Controline related pictures from the 1960's, and modern pictures of the famous Mears  Combat Museum in Lubbock, Texas.

If I forgot anyone, let me know.

Thank you for the compliments, Riley! The Gluedobbers and I were delighted to see you. The plaque you received was richly deserved. My only regret is that there wasn't enough room on the plaque to list all of your accomplishments.

The Mears brothers and families showed up on Friday evening ; they had a large SUV and a large covered trailer full of combat ships, both new and old.  Andy Mears brought his wife Jan, and Bob Mears brought his girlfriend Arlene Pyles who was the contest director of the 75 mph combat contest on Sunday. She did an excellent job, and we appreciate her efforts.

Arlene is also the contest director of all the Lubbock, Texas combat events. The timing system for the combat flights was ultra modern. After the 75 mph contest was over, Andre Ming took the entry fees over to the Mears brothers and they would not accept them; they donated the entry fees to the Tulsa Gluedobbers treasury.

The Mears are a class act; it would be wrong if their act of generosity was not mentioned.

Thank you gentlemen!

I would say their Dad taught them right.  Did not know this until now and I want to thank them for helping the club.  This is what makes model plane people so great. H^^
