Steven's 2017 NATS Plane
« on: March 30, 2017, 04:27:58 AM »
My son Steven has been working on building his own plane for the NATS this year. It is a Coyote, that he got at the NATS last year. He has worked on every piece of this ship with me guiding him. What is amazing is to see how fast they learn and his attention to detail is very good. We are now up to painting it, it is all in a filler coat that he is now sanding off!!!!!
Here are a few build photos:

What is the wing area and what is the weight. Samantha  and I built a foam wing , profile, no flap plane, full paint. It came out heavy  and did not  fly well. She can not spray light, don't think Steve  will be able to, on his first try. Only letting  you know what we went thru, having two light fast building airplane is the way too go. 2015 she lost her plane the day before we were going to leave for the Nats. We had do a fix of a older plane that did not fly well. For three years  the Nats have not been to much fun for her, don't know how much longer she will fly, she  tells me it just not fun anymore. Would have done things a lot different. I hope everything  works out for you two, it can be a lot of fun.

Steve,
It is about 500 squares and it should come in the low 40 with a battery on board. I plan on let him paint it, I do plan to set the gun on the dry side and I will have to help him. He is looking forward to painting it himself. We shall see how he does!
Thanks for sharing your experience I will try to help him keep the weight down. I am just glad he is showing an interest in building and flying.
Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe, pass on my compliments to Steven on a great job so far.  I can't wait to see the airplane in the air at the Nat's this year!  Is Joseph building anything new?

Tell that young man the old DOC Holliday says when he gets tired of sanding, to step back and think of all the girls that will be wanting to model his plane.   LL~ LL~  If every thing works out I might surprise you all at the NATS.   H^^

No problem. I am glad it went to a good home. Stephen Shure is doing a great job on it. What is he powering it with? If he needs anything let me know.

That's too bad, but ultimately, if it's not fun, there's not much reason to keep doing it. To advance beyond the basics and to be genuinely successful, you have to more-or-less dedicate a fair portion of you life to it. It's not for everyone.

Steven's new plane is done and flown! He is very happy with the results and is looking forward to this year's NATS. Now he brother Joe is trying to catch up to him and he is building a plane for the NATS too!!!! It is a Bob Hunt designed Prowler. The only issue is they use up my supplies and work space.

Be glad they are doing it while they are young.   Hardly see my son anymore with his being busy with the rock group, "Villians Dance".   They have videos on YouTube.  Now my grandson is also too busy with Boy Scouts to even think about flying let alone building.   In fact he is working scout camp all summer.

Cherish that.  I couldn't get my kids into my shop with a bullwhip and a cattle prod.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

What's the base color on Steven's plane?  I can't tell if it's charcoal gray or if it's got some metallic, or what.

I tend to borrow trouble, but you might want to bring an old white sheet to toss over that thing on sunny days -- it may get quite hot from being painted that color.

Jim - that is the plan. Hopefully it will survive

Tim - I do and it is fun too!

The color is a mix of silver, b25 silver, and black. So it has a metallic in it.
Thanks
