Hey guys, did Sterling make more than one version of the Mustang?
If so, what are the differences?

I know there are the S-1/S-2 Ringmasters and I think I've seen Mustangs with and without the "kinked" leading edge.
Different kits or trim pieces just left off sometimes?

There were short triangular pieces that went on the leading edge to the fuselage like on the full scale wing, but most leave them off as they sometimes get in the way of the landing gear and the tank.

Nice one Jim.
I flew my Sterling Yak-9 for a couple of months before I got around to adding the little triangles at the LE, and notched them for the LG. I'd like to get ahold of a Sterling Mustang, if for no other reason, so the Yak can have its twin Sis to hang with. I do fly the Yak about 3 or 4 times a year. Not much for the usual windy days, especially since it's one I really try not to bust.
Here's the Mustang's twin, the evil Yak-9. Still haven't added the exhaust pipes where that blue tape is.

My Mustang 45 could be considered a variant of the Sterling Mustang. It is the same shape as the Sterling S2 Mustang upsized for a .45 with wing mounted gear. The Mustang pictured is covered in chrome. It was built by John Stiles.I also have the sister ship the Yak9 in the same size.see the vendors corner.

That prompts the question, was/is there an S1 Mustang?

terry the Sterling version is the s1 version
Pat kings version is a 45 sized profile and is the S2 version. I better mention that Pat makes a really nice kit.

There is a Sterling model collector's web site and it should explain the kit number sequence. Kit S-1 was the Ringmaster, S-2 the Mustang and so on. The Ringmaster, Mustang and Yak all came out the same year and are old time legal as kitted. The S-1A Ringmaster came out years later, about the same time as their Hellcat and I think they share the same wing which has a sheeted leading edge. Other than the Ringmaster, there was only one version or variant of each Sterling kit..

Thanks, Dan, that clears it up.
I've been under the false notion that the S1-A RM was an S2 RM so, encountering reference to the S2 Mustang, I assumed an S1 version.

The Hellcat was a larger plane than the S-1A Ringmaster. I've had and flown the S-1 Ringmaster, the Yak, S-1A Ringmaster and the Hellcat. I don't remember ever building the Mustang. By the way Sterling had a large radio control Mustang in which one of our club members back in the 60's built for control line scale. I don't believe Sterling had any other size kits of the Mustang.

There are at least three variants of boxes the Mustangs came in that I know of. I have an old kit with "F-51" on the boxtop, orange. Then I've got the latest one, the boxtop says "P-51", yellow, the flyer is that left-handed guy. But, in 1956, the "P-51" I built had a different box than these, very similar to the old Ringmaster box. In all instances, the planes are the same.

I finally finished my S2 kit from the mid eighties and have been working up the nerve to fly it. I'd hate to smash such a pretty plane, so I'll probably build and fly my Twister kit first(I can get another)

S2 wing ribs are available and the plans are too. When I do smash mine, I'll build another, but a little better this time.

It's an Enya .35, also from the mid eighties. Wasn't fun to get it started. Once I bought a Sullivan 12 volt starter, it agreed to run nicely and is about halfway broken in.

OK - couldn't see details, and the "band" around the middle looked .15X-ish.
No doubt, the Enya's a more appropriate choice.

In the late 60's I built one with an OS-35 R/C, 3 line bellcrank, flaps arrester hook, wing mounted gear, and flew it in profile carrier. It didn't fly very fast but at least it would not go very slow either, but it looked cool.
