Stalker .76RE
« on: February 05, 2016, 05:47:45 PM »
Just received a new Stalker .76RE from Tom Dixon. Beautiful engine, can't wait to get into the new build. Tom has great service, turn around time is 5 days, unless your bank doesn't recognize an out of state purchase. Suggestion, if you are purchasing something out of state or country, let your bank know ahead of time, so they don't put a hold on your card.  LL~

    Hey Gerald,
I bought a Stalker .81 RE a few years back & and am now running it quite a it. I may get another.   I also picked up a Stalker .51 from Tom last November  great service .  I hope to see a little more  you this season. I've always looked up to you as a Master Builder & a very well seasoned , experienced pilot. Not to mention watching you fly.
I find the Stalker to be a very under control power system.  Very steady , run it as rich as you want no burps or coughs in the verticle 8 .Just a perfect engine for me.
Maybe we will see you in Portland in April , John

Gerald, I have a Stalker 76 SE. This is a low RPM high torque engine. It requires large props with pitch. At least 13-14 inches and at least 6 p
using the Yatsenko Props I get from Kaz . 13.4x6.5 or so. 7000+-rpm nice steady four cycle I flew one in a clunker profile 72 + oz no problem,
the run characteristics are very different from PA , Jett ETC. I used 15% Byrons Heli Fuel all synthetic 21% oil with 3 head gaskets.
I may have used more head gaskets I have to check. Like the motor smooth, quite.

   Gerald,
I went round & round on the .81 props , in the end I did exactly what PJ & Randy Powel  told me to do in the first place. I'm using a 12 - 8 to a 13 - 8
low rpm 6100 to 7000 RPM. I buy Master Airscrew wood props & true them up & undercamber them.. I have repitched my Eathers too  . If I find something close to what you are looking for I'll let you know .  I found my .81 just wont rev but with its smoothness & low end torque it works fine ( also quiet).

I did as Walter says... added 3 head shims when new I had trouble flipping it over .  I think the .76 &  .81 are similar. As a safety note   mine starts in reverse often.       John

Hi Gerald! I don't know anything about the prop size you need, but if you check out eliminator props in the vendors corner, you'll see Steve Wilk makes all those size CF props two or three blade. I gotta order some from him for my ro-jett. But i ordered a boat load of 1/2A speed props from him. They really are sweet.

Good luck! Hope to fly with you one day

Thanks guys for info, low revs is what I am looking for, would like to be able to run big three blade is possible. Engine, but wooden two blade is fine too. If I have to go to CF to get what I want then that's okay, not my favorite set up, but in order to get the right set up working then, I follow the map :). Thanks Dane for the reminder that Steve Wilks does those props also, I had forgotten. Anyhow again, thanks for the feedback. Oh and John, thanks for the kind words, but now I haven't flown for so long that I'm sure there will a few moments of amusement that you will see as it scares me to death. Thanks again all.

One more question about the .76RE, how big a fuel tank are you running, and are they plastic or metal? Tom Dixon has gotten Brodak's to make a 2 1/4" wide tank for these bigger engines, but need to know what size, about. The only restriction for size is the distance between the header neck and the motor mounts, its about 1/14" so a big thick tank would be a problem. OH and last, (this time :), do these engines run okay on regular uniflow, or do they need muffler pressure?

Will do, thanks Mark. BTW I took that JPG copy to a Blue Print Shop and they said it can be printed up to about 60 inches long because the resolution is so good. Ih ad them make me a 24 x 36 print and it fantastic. Anyhow, on with show.

   Gerald,
Since I run my .81 quite rich wih .327 venturi at low RPM I  using over 7 ounces I'm not sure the precise time if you want it I can get for you on Wednesday.   I got my tanks fro Eric Rule I use his tanks that are something like 2.25 wide 1.5 high at various lengths. I order them as kits.  My muffler doesn't interfere with the tank . I use All Synthetic fuel & high nitro. No muffler pressure it runs as good as anything there is.  And again  exersize safety & caution when starting them  mine start backwards all the time.  Also unifo.

Gerald,  I took the plane out today & checked the time from start to shutoff it was 5:38    7.5 ounces of fuel.  Others may have other results.

Thanks John, Tom Dixon recommended synthetic fuel, little or no Nitro, depending on the needs of the plane. Dave Royer uses all synthetic fuel with no Nitro in his Magnum with the Stalker .60 and has good results. He had a time fiddling with compression, props and fuel before it finally settled down, but now its real workhorse. So I guess when I get that far, I'll try one and maybe all the suggestions posted here and from Tom and Dave and see what it takes to make this beast run.

I will check with Eric Rule about tanks also. I'm guessing a 2 1/2" wide tank, 1 1/4" deep, about 6 inches long should be enough for starters, right?

That tank is just over 9.5 oz.  Do you really need that much fuel to fly the pattern???

  Gerald ,
I have a  5.5" long tank in my plane I do   run rich so a 6 "   tank might work.
