Awesome job! Hope more new folks show for up for what is quickly becoming THE Vintage Combat gathering. Fun, laughs, relaxed camaraderie and silk n' dope ships  from the 50s, 60s & 70s that look cool and perform great.

If I wasn't so old I would pack all the planes up and be there.  I have several flights on the "Jerkline Special" I added a mono wheel too so I could use my stooge for launch.   Would you believe it flew great minus the rudder after the first flight.  Rudder has been put back on and flown again.  Seeing the Ringmaster in the video reminded me of the guys that flew it for combat back in the day.

Hoping to see you in Sept. I just found original plan for Jim Mears Raunchy that I had purchased from MAN circa 1964. Drawn by Joe Wagner. Remains of my original in basement not restorable so easier to build new. Original had Veco 3" BC. What are folks using to day for BC?   Original was setup with hard tank, which was never removed. Probably all rusted inside so I would have to remove rear cover, clean and resolder, probably not worth the effort, so maybe a old school pacifier better?  Please recommend best setup. Will use my 36X BB with stock NVA. Unsure how that NVA will work with higher pressure new set bladder set. All advice welcomed. Thanks, Lyle

Any recommendations for modification from original configuration as published in MAN ?i.e lengthen tail booms? Other ? Does anyone have the issue of MAN with construction article? I still have all my old issues but they are packed away in boxes and I can't recall what issue.

What are you all using for covering? Silk & dope, or polyspan with dope? Last choice would be iron on but im not confident if wIng would have enough strength.

Lyle,
A few use Silk and most use Film. Alot is determined by the airframe. I have one Super Satan done in silk, the other one is Ultracote. The ultracote model was beefed up a bit. So far its got a half dozen flights on it and its still together. Fingers crossed!

 Having fun!

I picked up wood today. Have all I need except for maple motor mounts. Shopping silk online. Best choice & cost seems to be Dharma. They offer 5mm and 8mm in white only. Thai silk is sold in colors but i read it might be avail only as preshrunk. Which brand / weight  have you tried? The 8mm might be a tad heavier but would need less coats dope.

Lyle,
I used the 8mm quite a bit. It is fairly heavy and may fill quicker. Your mileage may vary. Vibrant colors!  I'm currently framing a Blitz and going to try the 5mm and dye it. I purchase my silk from Thai silks. Great service!

Lyle:

On the standard 36X nv: Make sure it closes off completely.  Put a piece of clean fuel line on the inlet side, close the needle valve all the way, and suck on the line. If it seals (you'll tell by the suction), you're good to go. If it doesn't, it may not lean enough to regulate the pressured fuel.  Very few won't seal... but it can drive you crazy at the field if you have one that doesn't.

I will ck it. I'm original owner and had this engine in a voodoo back in the day and it ran fine on the pacifier. In those days mostly used missile mist , tried Blast once or twice. I think today I'll stick with Powermaster GMA, 10% with 22% oil. I don't think any benefit to GMA Fox 35 stunt mix,10% / 29% castor.

I've only run using hard tank with crankcase pressure or a baby pacifier. Have never used more modern bladder setup made from fuel tubing. My understanding is the modern bladder gives higher pressure than pacifier and higher pressure may result in making NV setting more touchy when using original fox nva. I was told if using bladder better to use remote NVA setup from OS,10 which has finner threads. I may try that on my JCS since I don't want to fly it using original Johnson NVA. To run JCS perhaps I could also install ST style NVA? Any comments & advice welcomed

Lyle:

Yes, a high performance bladder may put out more pressure than a stretched pacifier.  If you have trouble getting a needle setting, you may try putting a restrictor inline.  How to:

* Take a piece of 1/8 O.D. brass tubing about 1/2" long or so.

* Solder one end closed.

* Drill a centered hole through the solder. Start with something like .020".

* Place this inline like a filter.

This will significantly slow the flow of fuel to the nv, which should allow the coarser threads of the vintage 36X a lot more adjustability. If you can't get rich enough, then drill out the restrictor incrementally until you get a range of needle adjustment you're happy with.

ALL:

Just ordered a 1/2 dozen props and a new ignition battery!  The engines feel pretty good on the airplanes except for the LS 36X on the Super Satan. It will need some loosening w/fuel. Still some odds n' ends to do... but I should be ready to head for the GSCB field ahead of schedule!

Oh, did I mention that IT'S GONNA' BE EPIC!!!!

Well, just a little over 2 weeks away.

Just a little history on the opening pictures of the video. That's our own Frank Imbriaco launching my fathers Super Satan in Model Airplane News way back in 1967! Second clip is of Frank Launching my father at the first Vintage fly in 2013. Dad turned about a half dozen laps with inside and outside loops and handed me the handle. He hadn't flown control line in 35+ years. Needless to say I was impressed!

Attached is the latest.

I'm pumped!

You're doing an EXCELLENT job you your Blitz!!  Can't wait to see you fly it.  Where are you guys finding silk that's long enough to cover wings more than 35" in one piece (my preferred way)?  All I have seen is 3' square.

THANKS for your insight into the opening pictures in the VCF video... that bit of history slipped right past those of us that aren't in the East Coast Combat Crazies bunch!  Made it that much more enjoyable!

Less than TWO WEEKS before we point the Terrain toward NJ and begin the trek to Yankee land!!

Larry will flip when he sees your "BLITZ " !

For those who don't know, Mike Luciano, Tom's father, built quite a few Super Satans- straight and tapered wings- back in the 60s and flew them all the time. Excellent builder/flyer.
At times he flew  with his trademark stogie  or  a pipe blazin as he sliced up the sky.  Great memories.
50 years later, these ships still produce the same excitement.

Andre,
I have been using Thai silk. This is the first time I dyed my own. This is 4.5MM paj. So far its been promising. It comes 54" wide by as many yards long as you want. I weighed it and it actually came out at 3.8MM. I also purchased the 5MM but have not tried it yet. I have to admit, I did seam the silk at the center section, the seam virtually disappeared. The finish has had some issues but as always we learn from our mistakes. I'm hoping for the humidity to break this weekend so I can finish up the doping.

Frank,
It's coming along. It will be a 8' finish. Wood work came out nice, had some issues with the decal.(Wish I made a mask) Special thanks to JFV for cutting the ribs for me!

Tom:

Thanks for the insight on the silk!  What did you use to dye it?  How much proportion, etc?  Inquiring minds want to know.  :)

OMG... do you realize I haven't silk/doped an airplane since 1972???  After the '72 Nats I started using Monocote and never looked back.

IF I try silk again... I think I'll do so on a simple, smaller airplane like a Demon.  I must admit it HAS bugged me some that my nostalgia airplanes (that I hope to be "flying history") are NOT "historical" when film covered.

Doc,
We got to get you out here one of these times. Too much fun to miss!

Andre,
I followed the instructions on the Rit website. Here is what I did.
1. I went out and bought a nice clean 5 gallon bucket
2. 3 gallons of water to a half bottle of Lemon yellow
3. I put the water on the stove and heated to 140 degrees. Okay, how I heated the water in a plastic bucket. I have an old pot, filled half way with water and placed the 5 gallon pail inside that. heated that on the stove. Brought up to 140 and dialed back to maintain 140. worked great!
4. After putting the Silk in, I waited about 5 minutes and added 1 cup of white vinegar.
5. Let it brew in the dye mixture at 140 for about an half hour stirring occasionally.
6. Hung to dry, then rinsed it out in cold water.

Al,
Looks great! Let's  go fly it!

Oooo.. never seen a Super Swoop fly! Looking forward to seeing yours tearing up the air!!

Tom:

Ah, so you buy it from Thai Silk in lengths you indicate, and it comes to you white. You then dye it with Rit dye to the color of choice. Got it.  Is it ridiculously expensive?

Yup, I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about returning to silk n' dope for my vintage combat ships.

Question about GSCB Snowbird meet. Another post on general forum posted some photos from  Feb 1964 meet. Trying to establish when the Snowbird meet was last held. Based on Peabody comment no meet in 1989, implies last time would have been 1988?
Can someone who is in touch with LS ask him about Snowbird meet history and for how many more years it continued?
Thx, Lyle

Lyle...I joined the GSCB in 1989 and there were no Snowbird meets afterwards....although the more seasoned members spoke of them....
Given the time stamp of Tom's pics, and my remembering, there are five years that the event stopped being a "Snowbird meet" and simply a New Years Day fun fly.

I also wonder if the Snowbird meets were held on January 1? I think I recall them being later.....mayhaps March?

Thanks
