Pilot needed? For the Gee Bee R-3
« on: October 20, 2016, 09:19:39 AM »
I'm looking for the perfect pilot for the Gee Bee R-3.

I've been everywhere looking, on line and Park Flyers. Got my canopy there BTW, a bit of playing around but it will do.

Anyway, I remember seeing this great pilot in a finished model. A really great pilot!

The pilot had a helmet and I believe a helmet shield. It was nicely detailed with black and white checks and accent colors, I believe red.

Yes, I should have saved the photo. Anyone know the pilot or model it's in?

The GBR3 at 55" in span, I'm not even sure what scale that would be for a pilot? Mostly sold by scale.

But the head could be 1.25" in height, I can trim the chest area to fit the height of the flat base.

Pilot has to have a helmet.

Thanks in advance.

Charles,
I don't know how to post photos here yet but I was looking at Advantage Hobbies the other day and they had an extensive list of pilots. The one i found might be too big it says it was for a 60cc ARF, but has the check and red detailing.

You do not know what scale your "scale" model is.

  • Find the specifications for the original
  • Divide 55 inches by the wingspan of the original (there's 12 inches to a foot)
  • buy the pilot figure that scales the closest to the scale of the model
AMA 64232

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Tim,

Yes, I know all that but this model is a copy of another model, which was only a drawing, not an actual aircraft.

I believe I mentioned this on the first page of the Gee bee R-3 build.

Never a real aircraft but plenty of models in many sizes have been built. It's a popular design.

Thanks for the reply.

Craig,

That could work, but I'd rather have the look of the second photo. The pilot is to large in the second photo.

Mark,

Yes you make a good point.

Read above, I did Google. The one's I like are to large.

I am waiting for a call from Hanger 9. They have figures from 1/3 to 1/10 scale.

I'll know more in a bit.

The pilot figure is an important part of the overall look. I cannot have a clear canopy this large without a pilot.

Thanks for the reply.

Mark,

Thanks for those links.

Some I tried. I've actually been to Graves's Hobby and I did take a look at what they had on line.

However, Motion R/C may have what I'm looking for.  #^

Thanks for that link.

You've been a big help.

MM,

Seeing I cannot find anything in the size or look that I want, I'm going to take Ty's advice and attempt to make my own.

Mark mentioned race car helmets and that was exactly what I envisioned.

I've been on line looking at them. There's hundreds.

Should I do a Build?  LL~

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, links and the idea.

I would not have thought to make my own and searching race car helmets never came to mind.  Thank you for that Mark.

Ohhhhhhhh My Gosh!

I went and did it.

I pulled the 1" lumber from my top shelf and wittled away. Well, not realy.

After looking at so many photos I finally just drew the thing on paper and contacted cemented the paper to the 1" piece of balsa.

Bandsaw galore and I had the silhouette. Sandpaper and labor to get it where it is.

6 pieces so far.  I've got a bit of final detail to do but what's left is a bit easier probably taxing, but easier.

I hope it's well received.

I did some fine tuning, not that noticable unless you look close. I knocked down the high character lines, added some body putty and a coat or two of Deft Wood Sealer.

The cardboard is the template for the shield. I'll pick up on this tomorrow.

Looks like Gort.

Doesn't look like any racing helmet I have ever worn or have ever seen. Shape and profile are all wrong. The crown above the eye area raises too high and slopes back. The area that covers the mouth drops way too low. Most air racing pilots wear open face helmets and an oxygen mask. I don't know of any airshow aerobatic pilots that wear full face helmets, and even modern jet fighter and other military helmets are open face for an oxygen mask. It's give youthe ability to barf if you need to and not have it come back in your face!

Williams Brothers do a line of pilot figures.  There cut off at just above the elbows but are a good starting point.  Tower hobby show a selection of their wares here:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0091p?&P=SM&C=QHA&V=WBR

The do WWI, Civil, Military, and Sport versions.  Williams were or are in transition from one owner to another or some such, so there may be limited stock out there at the moment.  The WB website does not appear to be fully built as yet, but they do so some sizes for the pilots styles the produce or intend to produce again.

Tony,

Thanks for that but I think I will stay with what I started.

Dan,

You have a good eye.

The top does need to be reshaped a bit so I'll fine tune it again. I would have missed that because it was pretty much done, so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Here's how I came my this particular race car helmet. Only one on line with a good side view that interest me.

Remember, I wanted an enclosed helmet. Still not to shabby, probably should have done the art copies before I did the cut. Still close and much better now.

Guys, thanks for the replies.

Now I have to find some really small decals.

Charles

P.S.

Now that I look at these photos, it appears as though some of the helmet's top may be decorative or a "mohawk" type designed in for strength? So, looks like I have to knock that part down a bit more.

It's still not what a pilot of a racer would most likely wear.  If that is the only side view of a racing helmet that you could find on line, you must not be looking very hard or settled for the first one that came up.

Dan,

There's so many you need an adding machine to count them.

What I have isn't perfect but it will make do.

I want to get this model finished.

I made changes based on your observations but I'm staying with this one.

I added some spot putty and a coat of Deft Wood Sealer.

I have a few hundred colors to choose from for the shield. I've had this sample booklet since 1989.

Thanks for the reply.

Al Rabe did a piece on his cockpit and pilot building sometime back,....maybe on SSW. I do not remember the starting point for the pilots bust, but they always looked very good in his Mustangs, Seafurys, and Bearcats (at least IMHO).  I liked the way his pilot figures had there heads turned to the side as if looking out in a 3/4 front direction. He used paper stock (if memory serves) as the basis for his cockpit interior, to some degree.  Very light and easy to cut and fabricate.

Ohhhhhhhhhh, My Gosh!  :o

Guys, thanks for the replies.

Gort and I went to the local optometrist to try on some different color shades.

Late in the day so we didn't get much accomplished.

Here's Gort in white mode, but I think he would be better off black or bright red maybe even yellow or orange. Not sure about that yet?

Much of the helmet color has to do with the cockpit color, which I'm keeping simple. No 300 plus pieces here.

Looks good Charles, and there were full face helmets used.

Two examples, Heli pilots and an old MIG fighter.

Chris,

Really nice!

Too late for that now, Gort and I have bonded. Besides I have time in this and I cannot turn back.

Looks like black won't cut it? I might try yellow or red. White has posibilities because whatever color tint I use for the visor it will show up well or better. So lighter colors are probably the best choices.

I'm still undecided. I checked again on line and found this helmet. Nice!

I sanded the recess that I originally had to change the shape of the helmet. I should bring that recess back.

Chris, thanks for the reply and photos.

Craig.

Craig from down under!

Yes, Gort and I are getting to know each other quite well in fact we had a few drinks last night. 010!

Can't have a head, I meant a helmet, without  a body to go under it.

Soooooooooo, I cut up one of these jet pilots I've had for 30 years.  LL~

Left one is how they are packaged. The right one is what is left after countless trimming, cutting, gluing and downsizing plus the removal of the pilot's head.

It's a snug fit and probably to snug and incorrect, but I can live with it. Shame on me.

Who said 5 grams for their home made pilot? I got 4 grams here so far with the bust and the helmet.

I'll suit Gort up and get a shot of him in the cockpit. See how that looks?

Craig, thanks for the reply!

Speaking of pilots, my first plane was a ringmaster I built with my dad. I drew a pilot on the side with an ink pen. My dad painted over it lol.

MM,

My dad wasn't involved in the hobby, he worked two jobs.  :'(

Anyway, I see guys glue paper printed pilots to the sides of their profile models. I think you can buy printed pilots?

Gort is in progress stage test fitted in the cockpit.

Keith

Keith,

I've purchased canopies from Park flyers for the GBR3. That's a Park Flyer canopy in the photo, I just removed the tapered half and kept the front. I took a real good look at what was available as far as pilots but saw none that appealed to me or any that I thought would work.

I just recently took a look at his radial engines and seen none that had the detail I needed so I designed a 9 cylinder radial
for laser cutting. Balsa and thin ply.

Reminds me, I have Stuka canopies from Park Flyers if anyone wants one. Bought them and couldn't use them because they are for a different Stuka.

Keith, thanks for the link and the reply.

I did a bit more fine tuning on Gort today. Nothing major but small improvements.

I sanded the highs with 320 and brought out a bit of the under color, white, in doing so.

I also added the recess, which I originally had, to Gort's top. You can see the two character lines in the photo. Makes the helmet look a bit more real, besides, the the photo of the helmet I like above has these character lines.

Interesting, the helmet looks more like Gort from the back.  LL~

A coincidence or have I already done this in a different demension? (Twilight Zone, music.)

That yellow helmet above. Hard to tell if the orange color is shadowed yellow or a gradient?

I do like the look so I may airbrush a yellow and orange gradient onto the helmet. With black accents and small decals, if I can find the right decals, the results should be a good looking Gort.

Gort will be the only focal point under the canopy.

I added a quick dusting of Krylon satin white to cover the black. White mode is a good beginning.

The yellow will go over the white quite easily with hardly any paint build up.

More painting, phase 2.

I actually thought out this paint scheme believe it or not. I made a left and right paint mask which made it easier to mask.

The black is Krylon satin, the yellow is Tamiya spray can for plastics.

Doesn't look like a bumble bee anymore. Well, not as much anyway.

Starting to shape up and I'm pleased with the results so far.

I still have a few more tasks to do before the helmet is completed.

Color choice and the final shape of the visor has to be determined.

Decals would be a good finish and I believe I have something in mind for that.

Your neat helmet reminds me of ones worn by the Storm Troopers on planet Endore, where all the teddy bears lived, and chased Luke and hair buns through the forest on their levitating "bikes"..  LL~ LL~ D>K
