PhillySkip's New Ares
« on: May 25, 2017, 01:05:34 PM »
Attached are pics of my Ares. This was a complete restoration and rebuild of this Ares bought at a yard sale for $30. The finish is Rustoleum Gloss Enamel over .6oz fiberglass in the nose area and tissue and butyrate dope from the cockpit aft. Wing and flaps are Monokote white. She's powered by an La40 with tongue muffler. I've flown her on 61'.015 lines eyelet to eyelet. Flying weight is 48 oz. Special thanks to Charles at CFC Graphics for creating the Ares Chicken (taken from old Ambroid ad) and for all of the other graphics that I used. I only have one flight on her ,but hope to have her ready for Classic at Brodaks. Hope you like her....PhillySkip

It looks great Skip. I remember what it looked like when you got it. A total transformation.

I saw the plane up close the other day and I have to say that Charles did a fabulous job on those graphics. Wow is about all I can say.

Eric the plane was probably built in the early 1960s. It was scratch built from plans,I believe. The original power was an OS Max 35 s. It was covered in silk and finished with dope. It had these enormous wing fillets made with some type of spackle. The other Ares it's sister ship was identical only it had a Fox 35 and a different type of control system. My pal Rich has the sister ship.

I had to cut into the fuselage in a number of places to redo the entire control system. Getting the silk off was a job as were the fillets. I tissued the fuse and tail and used butyrate dope and filler coats from the cockpit back the nose was fiberglassed. I also had to redo the engine mounting set up for the LA40.

I might have a pic of the plane early on in the resto process .I'll check....PhillySkip

Ken nice day at the field today huh? That twin P51 of yours is waaay cool. The Ares needs a bigger tank.

Skip, seeing how the Ares was just redone, I wasn't quite certain as to how much fuel you were using. Just from the sidelines, it seemed short. Does the plane have a 3.5 oz. tank?  Even the MAX-S would be hard pressed to complete a pattern with 3.5 ounces at least in our parts of the woods. I'm quite certain that choking the venturi down would help, I would just use caution about overheating it. I believe at one time Master Airscrew offered a 10 x 3,5 3 blade prop. Unfortunately, I don't think that one is available any longer.

Ken the Ares engine has the smallest venturi I own a .265.The tank is just shy of 4 oz. I'm going to build a bigger tank today. Also that engine was in my teal colored Ares and she's very thirsty for some reason. I have other engines that mount on the same bolt pattern so if a larger tank doesn't get it I'll switch engines. with all of that said she sure looks pretty out on those lines.PhillySkip
