PASSING OF CARL SHOUP
« on: May 21, 2016, 10:48:39 AM »
It`s with great sorrow to let  everyone know that Carl Shoup  passed away last night. He was injured at work and got an infection from a smashed thumb. His lungs filled with fluid and also staff infection. They had a tube down his throat and they removed it to ask if he wanted to continue and he passed way. Carl was a good inventor and loved flying planes. We where very good fiends even though he lived in Grand Junction we talk on the phone often I will miss him alot.

I had only met Carl over the phone, he had volunteered to be a NATs judge this year.  This is very sad news for all of us.  God Bless Carl and his family...

Very saddened to hear of Carl's passing; he had a lot left to give to our community of kindred spirits.  In a group of unique individuals drawn together by the common bond of an uncommon passion, Carl was always just a bit more unique than most.  Godspeed good friend.

I'm sorry to hear about Carl.

Carl built this Dale Kirn bat plane.  To keep the points from breaking off during transport he put find-your-car-in-the-parking-lot antenna balls on them.  He decided the balls looked cool, so he kept them on and flew it with them.

I did not know Carl real well, but had talked to him on the phone a couple times. I bought a life time supply of Fancher  style handles from him years ago. Very nice guy. I was looking forward to meeting him at the NAT's this year. Kathleen and I praying for his family.

Wow!  I first met Carl at the Northwest Regional.  He was in a wheelchair and flying OTS and Classic.  A really good guy.  I launched that airplane, Belfry Bound.  He built more than one, I remember a green one and a blue one.  All Monokote and very well don.  I remember it being difficult to hold onto, stuff sticking out all over.  Not as difficult as flying from a wheelchair, which he did quite well.

A big loss, always a pleasure to be around him.

Carl was regular at VSC and was always friendly and helpful.  He was an important addition to CL flying and will be missed by all who knew him.  Very sad that another friend has passed.

The world of Control Line modeling is a lesser place without him.

Gordan,

Thanks for getting the word out.  We had a stunt clinic today here in the CO Front Range and several of us were bragging on the handles we purchased from Carl.  May he RIP.

Very sorry to hear about Carl's passing.  He was a participant at many of our contests in Colorado and VSC as well.  I will not forget the time he flew a very good pattern with the Belfry Bound from a wheelchair at VSC.

I hadn't seen him in a number of years. Still remember him flying in a wheelchair at one of the VSC's while recovering from a motorcycle accident. Godspeed Carl.

The first time I met Carl was at a Rocky Mountain Aeromodelers contest at the Denver Coliseum parking lot back around 2001 or so. He was flying officials from a wheelchair that day, recovering from a motorcycle accident as I recall. Amazing to see, I didn't think it could be done. I admired his perseverance. Rest in peace Carl.

So sorry to hear this. I met him at VSC the year he was flying from the wheel chair and gave the Belfrybound to Dale Kirn. Got to visit with he and his wife at a Wichita contest a few year later. He had a passion for stunt and a love for people. My heart goes out to his wife and family.

No way!  He was one of my best combat buddies back in the 90's.  I was meaning to give him a call as I have re entered the sport.  Not sure what to say really.  He was a great guy, and helped me so much.  He will be missed.  : (

Gordan, this is another shock to this old man.  I first met Carl at a Topeka contest at Gage Park.  He had a plane that supposedly was all Monokote.   I had to take his word for it as I could feel no seams on the plane.  He was also a big help to me through the years either over the phone or at contests.  He will be missed.   :(

Carl and I were bench racing in the pits one day before our final combat match at the Rocky mtn. CL champs. Probably around 1998.  We were joking about what we were going to do to each other in the circle to gain an advantage.  I jokingly told him "I'll just step on your toe!"   Carl replied " Go ahead, I don't have one!"  I said, no way!  He told me to feel his shoe, and sure enough, no big toe!  I quickly asked him, what happened to it?   Seems that his thumb got cut off at work, and re-attaching it did not work.  So, they offered to put his big toe on his hand!  When he held it out, sure enough, it was a big toe, thumb!!    I will never forget that big Toe hair on his thumb!  Man, those were good times.  What this hobby is all about.  I am really gonna miss my old friend Carl.  There will never be anyone again like him.

Gorgan, met you both at 2011 nats, and being a first time Judge, you guys helped me a lot. Carl was very kind and am extremely lost for words. However, I liked his line reel electric screw driver device, I made my own and think of Carl everytime I use it and always will. Very sad day for C/L.
