Old Windy Videos from way back
« on: August 19, 2016, 09:19:04 AM »
At our Cheezehead fly in this summer I received 4 office boxes of VHS tapes from Buzz Paricka. It took me a little time to find some software and cabling to convert them into a digital format. I am still learning the software and some of the tapes tried to spool out into my old VCR. And some of the tapes are damaged. For those that have been following the 900 Series I have been uploading, I am going to take a little break and do a little more time travel back a few more years and upload these older video.

Let me know what ya think.

PS - if anyone has a old Mini DV camcorder that they no longer need, I have a need.

Thanks
Paul

Thanks Paul, I know that's a helluva lot of work, but just be sure to know it's not going to waste. I've picked up a lot from the videos, even though much of what Windy built is way over my skill set. But now, not as far over as it used to be.

Brought back some memories.....I had a PA 51 and was finishing a Randy plane, but it was flying, not building season. Windy GAVE this very airplane to me....I screwed my PA into it, bought longer, thicker lines and went to the GSCB field...two flights the first day.....sore hand and arm.
Had Windy fly it, thinking I had screwed something up because it pulled too hard.....Windy said that it was "perfect"...I fooled with it for a couple more days and took the PA out of it and gave it back......

Have fun!

I'd love to be the big ol' boy that could fly those "Ships," plowing through the wind on a thick rail of smoke. But I met my match with a somewhat less classic example of a big one, also gifted to me, and it finally showed me who was boss. Like the dog walking the boy. I rolled the wheels at the bottom of the hourglass a few times before I got the message... unfortunately to its demise.

Thanks Rusty. It's a little bit of a PITA. I am having to take a few of the tapes apart and tape them together and fix broken tape cases. I glad some are getting some enjoyment from my efforts.

As long as people are watching I will keep at it.

I appreciate your efforts Paul. I was exposed to Windy videos as a little kid learning to fly control line. They are nostalgic to me. The way things used to be. A lot has changed on the East Coast.

I think I have a set of the original Windy videos. He was building a Nobler if you can believe it. I think the build was covered on something like 10 VHS tapes.

Cool Mike.
I sometimes wonder what happen to some of the people in the videos. If you want your tapes converted - I know a guy. 😉

I was mystified along about 6:00 in...the bit about masking the white airplane with red trim. I would never do it the way he suggested. Put red over white (or close), and never put white over red. Did that once, and never will again.  n1 Steve

Thanks to all for their efforts posting this stuff to UTUBE .

Good entertainment and fodder for those not in the Stunt Mainstream , and likely a few new flyers will get hooked randomly coming across this stuff .

Why is that, Steve? I put red over white auto Lacquer on the underbelly of my newest plane, and applied an extra shot of dope, knowing it would get gooky with fuel and goo. In a few days the red shrunk and separated. Is there something about red and white that don't play well together? I had to maiden it all covered with scotch tape.

I watched that three times and was also mystified.  He masks a few inches around the red, then toots the red.  I guess he doesn't worry about any red overspray that gets beyond his masks.  His method does have the advantage of having one color adjacent to the other, rather than one on top of the other.  Doing it the way he shows, there wouldn't be a red hump on the white.  He said that masking the whole plane would have taken him a whole day.  I don't think it's that big of a deal.  I'd mask the whole plane before tooting the red, either if I put the red next to the white or over the white.

Windy must not have had a cat.  He didn't mention using a tack cloth, nor did he seem to take measures to clean his plane before spraying (He did mention Sikkens once in the hour I watched).  Other things he didn't use are a respirator, a paint stand, and Windex.

His paint spraying technique is way different than mine.  I move the gun perpendicular to the long axis of the spray pattern, take a lot less time to spray, and still get runs.  I'd better get some remedial spraying lessons from Mark.

Windy was adding pigment to the white so it would cover well.  I think he started doing this back when he was using Sig dope (before Brodak's came out) and their white just didn't cover that well.

Some people got all of his tapes that he sent out regularly.  By the time they finished watching the tapes, they couldn't have had any building time left!  I would call him and ask for his best two tapes on cockpit detailing or his best three tapes on constructing a horizontal stab and view just these.  I learned an awful lot and have applied it.  The great thing with VCRs is that you could fast-forward through the parts where Windy was sanding for 15 minutes.

I am uploading parts of a day long stunt forum. Guys showing off new planes and how they built them. This was pre message boards.
These tapes are so old I'm almost afraid to fast forward or rewind them.
The only bad part is I can't fast forward while ripping to a file. Someone has to suffer thru it. LOL

Some of the people in the room I recognize and some I don't. My guess those that have been around will know.

Once in a while he'd turn the camera off and do something, but many times he'd let it run while he sanded for 15 minutes.  We used to laugh at that, but still, I learned an awful lot from his tapes and I'm pretty sure that a lot of other people did too.  Interesting that he does edit the bike videos.

Is that his name, Winfred? "Windy" is a good version of that. I bet the kids in school would call him Winnie, but I'd guess he probably put a stop to that.

He mightve got old & grumpy and decided to take a  break from the paint fumes awhile .

Also Big Jim was a mentor - He mayve decided to do a few things He;s been meaning to while he's got the time . Can get to be a treadmill , if you dont watch it .

Burnout is what I was thinking. I checked out his YouTube channel and he has gone motorcycle nuts! I watched a vid or two and didn't see anything airplane related in his shop.

It was sad to see.

Wow. Usually us silver haired guys go the other way. When we get too gimpy to build and drive race cars, motorcycles, and stuff, we retire to machines we can pick up and carry with one hand and a box of support junk in the other. That's the case with me anyway. I regret that I came along too late to have been able to meet him.

One of my flying buddies knew Windy pretty well for years, so at least I get to hear good stories about him. And I sure love watching him. And it makes me feel good that he enjoyed many of the simple finer things in life, like watching his birds over morning coffee, feeding the fish, helping his wife in the garden, etc.

Something tells me Windy is good at just about anything he put his mind to.

I really enjoy his new motorcycle videos. I repaired a cell phone holder using the carbon fiber and CA tricks he used on fairings. There is something about his voice and the way he works through things that is so relaxing. When I first started watching the new videos I was struck by a number of questions "where did the old gas stove that was the kitchen table go?" "When did he pave the drive way with block?"-that one was answered in the Tribute videos, and so on. He has an appreciation for life, his wife, and his friends that to me speaks volumes. I hope to have the opportunity to meet, buy him a pizza, and chat at some point.

I just did a member search with a couple of variations, did Windy get out of C/L before Stunthangar came along? Just wondering if he ever looks in, but I wouldn't expect it anyway. As I was typing that, Clstunt occurred to me, and it's a lot older.

Yeah, even if he was interested, his real life was/is so rich, he'd hardly have time for joining in a virtual fray like this. He did a great job of letting his camera be the conduit to us lucky recipients. And the camera didn't talk back to him either.

Big Jim was mentioned above. I have his flying handle. I use it a lot and it is adjustable, overhang, line spacing and inflight line length. It can be adjusted a small bit while flying. He sent it to Bill Rich and Bills hand was to big for the handle and he gave it to me one day 30 years ago to test it and I still have it.
