Nice job on starting to rebuild a Ringmaster variant pulse jet job, Mike. That would catch everyone's attention for sure. What's the white coating that apparently did little to protect the profile fuselage top from heat? (Looks charred.) Might it be too thinly applied asbestos, as described in Walt Musciano's 1970 book, Building and Flying Scale Model Aircraft?

At this time, both fuselage shells must be lined with an insulating material. Asbestos-magnesia powder can be wet with water and mixed to the consistency of thick paste and a thick coating applied to the interior to a thickness of about 1/4". (It is not necessary to coat the fuselage forward of the fuel tank.) This will dry, resembling plaster.

If you do cover it, I'd suggest 1/20" balsa, or perhaps 1/64" plywood.  Maybe perhaps two or three thicknesses of Silkspan would work, but I dunno.  I suspect that a normal Ringmaster wing won't have enough torsional rigidity without lots of help.

I remember at a Chicago NATs after the end of speed flying when a Canadian put up his jet speed.  It was still glowing as he landed.   Also before the tuned pipes and mufflers it was fun seeing the exhaust on the IC engines after dark.

That material is regulated and as a tethered UAS the aircraft must be registered (AMA numbers can't suffice) prior to repairs.  

ROCM - “Regulated Obtanium-Containing Material.” – Friable manufactured obtanium material (OCM) or a Category I non-friable OCM that has become friable OR a Category I non-friable OCM that will be or has been subjected to sanding, grinding, cutting or abrading OR Category II non-friable OCM that has a high probability of becoming or has become crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by the forces expected to act on the material in the course of demolition or renovation operations. ROCM should be approved prior to renovation or demolition.

UNOBTANIUM is not currently available. We still have to determine what kind of glue will work on it. After all we would not want you to be DQ'd if it feel off the model during your official flight!

Those guys judging at the VSC can be very demanding. I know this because they DQ'd my flight when the outboard wing exploded on the 4th inside. Even though I finished the flight with only the inboard wing attached they insisted on following the rules and claimed that a portion of the model falling off in mid flight was grounds for the DQ. Very Demanding!!! (LOL)

UNOBTANIUM is not currently available.

Eric, unobtanium has been obsoleted, and it would be understandable as improvements have been made over the past 40 years.

Current product is Furbentanium F-10, a fire resistive coating manufactured in the USA. Meets MEA 411-03-M, ANS/UL 263, ASTM E119 and a host of assembly designs per NFPA 251, UL 1709. Test after test by Underwriter Labs show Furbentanium F-10 is a Class A thermal coating meeting Class 1 and 2 Ratings.

Lacking the toxidity of unobtanium, it can also be used to coat coffee stirrers to prevent caking by sugar crystals from reuse by modelers who insist in keeping club expenditures to a minimum.

I did start to see this trend some years ago. After my mother dumpster disposed of our ( I am oldest of six) entire comic book collections ( a loss of several thousand dollars) I went on a mission to "collect" some stuff.

 I hope my grand children can turn some of ths crap into big bucks....Lord know they will need it as wife and I are spending their inheritance as fast as we can.....grin

BTW ....has anyone but me noticed...we older Folks are NOT targeted by current advertising....BUT many of the Radio and TV ads use OUR 50~60~70s music....very curious

When it comes to women, I've never won that battle. (I'm in charge of the household, right, Dear? ) Photos can be rotated after taking (I used gthumb and gimp) to show proper orientation.

Back in the late 1990s, I had a 640x480 Nikon CoolPix camera. Resolution was lower than today's megapixel cameras, didn't have zoom, but man, it took decent photos, was a decent camera for the time. I've learned it is not the camera, but the cameraman who makes good photos. Crappy photos can come from expensive high end cameras.

Thank our techs for digital cameras.  First trip to Tuscon we stopped at Alamagordo at the space museum.  Camera wouldn't advance the film.  Discovered no film in camera.  Now I worry about battery going flat.
