Modelers of the World, please show us your field!
« on: December 01, 2016, 12:19:26 PM »
Here is a request to modelers from all over the world.  Please post a picture of your club field or just you or friends flying control line.

I have seen pictures in magazines and here on the forum of some fantastic flying fields in wonderful places.  In particular, paved and fenced formal flying sites that surpass anything I am aware of currently in the USA.   It shows that control line is alive and well in the World and that there are people from very different places with very similar interests.

Maybe you don't have a fancy site.  Maybe your site is unique in some other way.  Is it in an obscure location?  A country no one would typically hear from?  A particularly scenic or odd place to fly?

So, let us hear from you and don't worry if your English is not so good.  Models are a universal language.

You don't want a picture of our dust bowl even though I think it is on the forum here some where.   Fred forgot to point out the carrier deck at Buder Park MO.  Made quite a few sorties there with the Wilmons and Johnsons.

Here is an overhead view of a field I often fly at near Dunedin in New Zealand.

Locally I fly at the cricket grounds. Might go for a spin tomorrow. I'll take some pictures.

3 fields I have done a lot of flying at: Balsa beavers site in Toronto, The Bean Field in Dresden and Rouge Park in Detroit.
All from Google maps

Bean field shot must be fairly recent, used to be a big tree between the two circles till the Emerald Ash borers killed it.

The Jackson Flyers Association, located at Fort Jackson, SC.
We fly to the backdrop sounds of grenades and automatic weapons fire. We've seen Apaches land on the field and Predator Drones whisper over, nearly obscured by the hazy sky. Troops training in navigation frequently come passing through, and one day, as you can see, they even play war while we fly air support!

Here's the big picture:

Our CL contingent call ourselves the Wildcat rangers. Mostly Wayne Robinson, Bob Zambelli, Rich Malik, Me and occasional others.

Here is ours - Jim Tichy Memorial Field, John F Kennedy Park, Napa, CA. The Napa river is just off to the left on the overhead shot. The radio antennas on the right, plus the generally dry air during the summer, cause significant charging that has to be bled off.

The other picture is a ground-level view looking in the normal direction more-or-less. This field is brutal in the afternoons and I think I have only done good bottoms here by accident. A certain OCD multiple-time champion has caused the fenceposts to be cut off at a uniform 5 feet.

Note that the ground-level picture was taken in the *middle of February* and this is a typical day. A little chilly in the morning, but otherwise pretty nice. The hills are also green instead of brown, since it rains in October-April. Same picture in September and the grass is uniformly tan/dead. The Napa Wine Train also goes up and down the tracks you can see in the background.

This field exists due to the tireless efforts of the late Jim Tichy who got the Napa city government to build the circle as a replacement for the older circle (a mile or so northeast, also near the same train track) when it got plowed under for a federal flood control project. I am the person currently listed as the point of contact for the AMA, and David does a lot of maintenance.

Note that there is a skatepark just up the road, an RC strip a little past that, and a BMX track nearby. A Napa county walking trail adjoins two sides of the circle. On Saturday mornings, there are probably 1000 kids from 6-18 and their parents that drive by or park in our lot. Out of that every weekend for years, we have never had one kid or parent express any interest. The only people are *grandparents* with tiny babies or toddlers. They stop and ask intelligent questions, the current kids and parents don't even glance over at what we are doing.

Our club Barnstormers Model Flying Club is close to the Or Tambo International airport in Johannesburg South Africa. The C/L side has one hard tar circle and a grass circle. There is also one small circle from years gone by on the far right side of the picture but is even a bit small for .15 size models so we "donated" it to the helicopter section. We have had some months of serious drought but as you can see the grass is now getting greener thanks to our vice chairman Evert Scholtz who has an irrigation system running now. We are finally getting some rain as well so that will help for sure. The R/C side has 3 runways and there are quite a few of the R/C folks that are now actively interested in C/L so all-in-all, C/L is looking good for the near future.

Hi Mike, every modeler knows Hamid in Iran , specially because he acts as the FAI representation here, but he is a R/C F3A (precision aerobatic) flyer and also has a good relationship with us. He also has promised us for FAI membership card, hope that happen, more over Hamid we have a very cool guy between us whose name is Sina Gudarzi, he has spent most of his life in U.S. flying U-control. below is one of our monthly off the field meetings...

Hi Mike, no rhino's and with the serious problem of the rhino horn market in parts of Asia, it's just as well! We also have no electricity besides generators which we use for functions like airshows, so everyone brings their own cooler boxes for cold beverages.

The Cholla Choppers MAC flying field in Tucson Arizona:

Anyone who has attended VSC will recognize this field.  There are three grass circles in the foreground and three paved circles behind.

The grass circles are used primarily for Combat and for "Chickens" who are afraid of a hard surface!

The paved circles are used for Stunt and Racing, and brave folks who don't often crash.  LL~ LL~

The land and primary circles were provided by the Tucson Parks and Recreation Department.  Resurfacing and upkeep are the responsibility of the Cholla Choppers MAC.  The Park Department does provide trash service and mowing of the grass circles.

This is my flying field in Stockton, CA. This is a soccer complex that is really well maintained. In the spring they cut the grass every week. During the week when all the kids are in school I have this whole field to myself - NOBODY there! On some weekends when there is no soccer going on (haven't figure out the soccer season yet - I think its year round) I can fly, but I need to have someone there to watch and make sure no one walks into the circle when flying. But usually flying day is on Mondays when the weather cooperates.   ;D

The Philly Fliers actually have three fields . One field is located not far from NE Philly airport ,It is owned by a company called Sparks, they make show displays. We use this field for combat ,speed with planes that are unmuffled.
The second field is at Neshaminy State Park and was/and is still used by the Philly Fliers. Up until this year it was the site of the club's annual Stunt contest, and various club picnics and sport flying.
The newest field is located in the Benjamin Rush State Park in NE Philly. It was the site of this years Philly Stunt Contest. The field is actually home to the NE Philly R/C Club and they gave the Philly Fliers one circle away from the R/C flight line. However on Stunt Contest day we have three circles going. Attached are some pics of our single circle and a Drone taken photo of the other two circles on contest day. We are very lucky to have three "sites" that we can fly from.....PhillySkip
