I've been looking @the magnum 52 and wondering if anyone had any experience at converting one to control line?

My experience is with the 36 size back in the 90's. If you get one with a good piston/sleeve fit it will be a fine engine. As an engine builder, first thing I would do would be to take it apart, de-burr and clean everything then re-assemble with boca bearings with single rubber seal front.

Stuka Stunt did conversions on this engine. Lowered the deck height and plugged the boost port. Good engine.

I knew he did the Magnum .53, I did not know he had reworked the .52, its a different case as far as I know, he may have, but I am not sure

If this engine is the same as the ASP 52, then it is a good unfussy stunt engine. I simply check for foreign bodies and put in a .275" to .285" venture which I turn up myself (this is using the OS NVA).
I have yet to change the bearings in either of my engines. They run just fine with no other mods. They can do a wet two right the way to a mild 4-2-4, depending how you set them up. No real vices and they have a lot more power than say an LA46.

I believe Randy Smith sells reworked one.  I have a Magnum 40 from him and it runs great!  Powerful and tame!

Or you could do what some people do, buy the engine, look for the mods (have to know what you're doing here) then do a bunch more of them and claim they're your mods.  Not saying anyone here has done that, but know of a few instances.  Ahhhh, sometimes there is real snake in the snake oil.  I knew this one dude whos Fox 35's snarled more like a K&B on 85% nitro.  Wonder how that happened?

Hi Guy's,
I've just received my Magnum 52 XL from Randy, and what a jewel.  I've purchased many motors from Randy over the years and they are worth every penny.  They run as claimed and expected.  I plan on installing the Magnum 52 XL in the New P-Force XL, it should be a killer combo.

Later,
Mikey

THAT was a bit of passive aggressive there
its not top secret, but it is knowledge earned by experimenting, trying , failing and trying again. He makes money to do this. Somehow I get the feeling you would expect a nascar crew cheif to give up his knowledge just because?
LOL
perhaps you should buy one then attempt to reverse engineer it? then at least Randy would get something for his efforts.

2 BLADES 13 X 4 , 13 X 4.5  13.25 X 4.5   2 BLADES  AN OLD  BOLLY OR CLONE  13 X 4.25  WORKS GREAT, OR BUY THE  Zinger pro prop kits and thin/trim one, or REV Up  Top Flite  13 x 4 or 13 x 5

3 blades  - 12 x 4.25, 12.5 x 4.5  13x 4.75   CF are best

any muffler that fits a OS 46 SF, or  TT 46 or Mag 46  will work, also I have tongue mufflers, the stock muffler works but is heavy

Randy

Sort of speaks for itself without me have to write for hours, if you know how to "balance a motor"
then you would not have a  problem, others destroy many parts
if you know  how to blueprint an engine  then no problem, some  kill things

same for head mods that actually work, converting over to  C/L
making the proper size induction part  and Needle assembly

reitiming  or re-angling ports  when needed,  this is where  tons of new parts are destroyed

then figure out how to get it to run best for what you have to  install it in

Randy

As I read that thread, it's largely about stuff that didn't work. How does that help anybody? And you never enlightened us on what the final outcome was. Randy has multiple, multiple National and World Champions use his stuff, not to mention a legion of Joe Bellcranks out there using his products. Not that Randy can't speak for himself, but just in case you didn't know, I thought I would point that out. And if you read the forum thoroughly, you will find that he is more than quite helpful to everyone that asks about the everyday stuff in stunt. As far as reputations go, you have a long, long way to go to catch up with him.
Now, tell me how I always have to win my arguments again.

How will this engine do stock, with no mods?   Of course a needle and venturi would be added.  I was thinking of putting one of these in my old Sig Magnum.

I have done the same with my ASP version, just a delrin venturi and an Enya pro NVA. In this form it is a very strong performer. I don't doubt that Randy's modifications will make it a much better  performer. However just putting in an appropriate NVA and venturi makes it a very creditable control line engine.
I must admit that I don't like Chinese engines much, but credit where credit is due. I have a second (new) ASP and this one is very tight, I suspect it will need a fair bit of running in. This one, I suspect, will not give the same result as my second hand conversion. Work on the ring may well be needed. I am a little reluctant to even run it with such a tight ring set up.

Andrew.

The reason I went with this motor was because I needed good reliable engines at a cheap price, and since they quit making the LA 46 I needed something. I  could auger in three or four of these engines for the price of one nice stunt engines. With me just starting the pattern again it just make more sense .I own a really nice ro jett 61 but I'm not there yet.Just explaining sorry about the ramble.

Subtract the weight of the throttle, which weighs 45.8g, but add a Delrin venturi, which weighs very little, and a good NV Assy., and Bob's Your Uncle!   S?P Steve

I weighed one myself, and it was 45.8 grams, not 48 grams. I didn't do the conversion to ounces. I thought maybe you would have an issue with the "Bob's Your Uncle" part of my post.  :P Steve

PS: Weighed on my Ohaus triple beam balance, bought new many decades ago. It's never weighed anything that is or has ever been a controlled substance...except controline planes, which are a controlled substance by definition...and free flight planes, which are sort of controlled for awhile, and then not controlled for awhile, also by definition...
