In need of some help with a K&B .40
« on: May 20, 2016, 01:59:39 PM »
I inherited a K&B 40 R/C engine that I would like to convert to a control line engine, in short replace the carb with a venturi.  But, the engine is missing a prop thrust washer.  I have a friend with a lathe and maybe he can make the washer for me but if anybody out there in cyber space has one they don't need I could sure use it.  Any other help or info would be greatly appreciated.  After running the engine through the crock pot process it appears to be in good shape and I have a plane on the board that would a good fit.
Thanks in advance
Andy

Hi Andy - MECOA lists parts for the .40s here:
http://www.mecoa.com/kb/40/40-parts.htm
Good luck with it.

If it's in good shape as you say, Andy, you shouldn't have any worries.
Let us know how it runs and post pix of your build!  ;D

Andy,
The K&B 40 will work fine but you need to get the right venture around a 0.275 with ST NVA through the venture (Jim Lee or Randy Smith has them see vendor's corner). They like 10% nitro and 24% total oil (50/50 ok). Don't over prop it, a 10 1/2 to 10 3/4" x 5 prop works fine. Likes to run rich 2 cycle (almost a 4 cycle). Ship should be around 52 - 56" around 48 -50 oz ish. Mine works fine with a tongue muffler.

Best,    DennisT

Don't over tighten the set screws for the venturi. Put some blue loctite and just snug them or they will crack out.

Do a search here for this engine and posts by the late Jim Thomerson. he used and liked the K&B .40 quite a bit and liked them. I think he propped his in the 11-4 range but not sure of that. I have one or two but have never ran them.
