What is the difference between a Green Box Nobler and a Nobler?

Anyone have a picture?

The Nobler was George Aldrich's original design.  The green box Nobler was Top Flite's production adaptation of the Aldrich design.  Manufacturers have to make some compromises to facilitate materials and packaging.

The Brodak Nobler kit is more faithful to the original than Top Flite's.

Here's an assortment of Noblers. #1, Ted's is "The Original". #2 is an ARF, but the tip and tail shapes show what a '57 or "Green Box" Nobler looks like. #3...you tell me which it is. I think you can! I like 'em all, but prefer the looks of the "Original" better than the '57. Greg's looks great, tho!  H^^ Steve

Edit: Well, #3 came out on top, wouldntchaknowit?

Well you've got the Nobler, George's design he flew to success.  Plans were drawn up for Model Airplane News without the original model as a reference so you then had two similar but different designs with the same name.  Then Top Flite wanted to put out a kit, so another set of plans were created that is different from the first two designs.  That's your green box 57 Nobler.  Later Top Flite kitted another version of the Nobler designed by Geiseke that came in a blue box.  Brodak decided to kit the original Nobler as George originally intended it with the drawings from the original plane.  Top Flite comes back with the new ARF which is essentially the GB kit with some updated construction.  To add to the confusion there are also TF RC versions, variations of Geiseke's design like UHP's kit, the Jr Nobler, etc etc etc.   "Nobler" can apply to virtually any of them, hence the need for more specific identification.

My advice is don't build the original version. They get run over by cars (LOL). Come to think of it, so did one of my Argus's.

The Top Flite Green box Nobler is actually the one that most folks built in the late 50's and beyond.  In my opinion it's a better flier and much easier to trim than the Brodak Original Nobler.  It has a slightly thicker airfoil than the original Nobler or the 52 (Man Plan) Nobler, and a lot less asymmetry in the wing.  The Original Nobler as kitted by Brodak may be the Original but with nearly 3 inches of asymmetry it is not the best.
Over the years I have built and flown two 52' Noblers, four 57 (Green Box) Noblers, and three Geiseke Noblers.  The latter being the easiest to build and the best flying.  All are Classic legal and the 52' is Old Time legal as well!

I have also owned one ARF Nobler (sorta 57) and flown more than half dozen of OP's.  The ARF by the way is typically light and straight and with small mods a very good flier!

The Geiseke has the best airfoil, the best construction and will typically build the lightest, all things equal.  The RSM Kit is a 57 and is probably the best option for competition with a Nobler today, aside from the Geiseke!

My last Nobler was a Geiseke built from a kit about 4 years ago from the Moon Brothers, weighed 37 oz with an Aerotiger and was the best Nobler I've had or flown.  It was more than competitive with anything in Classic and would carry it's weight in PAMPA in the right hands!
Some of that was no doubt due to the perfectly running powerplant from Randy Smith.

I noticed that the sequence of the pictures in my post is whacked. Bottom one is an ARF (nicely reworked by Greg Bahrman), and the top and middle ones are "Original". Ted built his from the Brodak kit, I believe, and that's the middle one...the one that had a Lincoln encounter. The top one (Warbird), also appears to be the "Original Nobler". Or perhaps the MAN plan?

I'd like to know who that is in the top picture and what the power is, so I could add that info to the picture title. I like the tip shape better on the "Original", but don't recall if that was used on the MAN plan or not. The wing offset is 2" or more, which is excessive. I believe Ted used the Rustler-Merco "Metamorph" .40 in his, but not 100% sure. I know he likes that engine.

My favorite is the Geiseke...best looking, best airfoil, least wing offset, etc.   y1 Steve

I recently picked up a Nobler at a flea market, I know it's not an ARF, it's covered with silkspan and dope, It has equal length wings, no asymmetry, which nobler might this be. Whoever built it used a custom wing tip, they are sheeted with balsa and no adjustable leadouts. Any help would be appreciated. Also the wing span is 52 in.

I am not aware of any Nobler version that had equal span wings.  I built a Gieseke Nobler (foamie) and made it equal span.  I have flown Noblers with asymmetry and can't tell the difference between equal span and longer inboard wing.

I would guess that the builder modified a kit or built it equal span from scratch.

The guy in the picture is Larry Draughn from North Carolina.  The model was built from a Bridak kit. Mid to late 90 's. It was signed by George Aldrich  before he passed.  Very nice model.  Brodak dope finish. p-51 Tar Heel scale theme

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to add a current link to the George Aldrich Nobler interview as it is no longer available on Vicstunt:
