Goldfish unveiling and a question...
« on: April 13, 2017, 07:00:40 AM »
If you can attend tonight's NVCL meeting, I'll be unveiling my Goldfish.

But, there is a problem.  Notice in the pictures that the engine (by necessity) is canted outwardly quite a bit.  This precludes use of a standard muffler.  I have to find a muffler with not only a longer stem (if that's what it's called) and also angled away from the engine centerline.  Suggestions?

Come fly at our field and you wont need a muffler.   Ear muffs maybe. LL~ LL~  Hope she/he flies as well as it looks.

I really like this fish-plane!

Tongue would be simplest, as suggested.

Maybe...  File stock muffler flange at an angle to fit.  Looks like an older Fox with no lugs, so a strap type mount might allow for mounting with angled flange.

If you do use a stock Fox muffler, it would kind of look like a Remora (sucker fish that you see attached to sharks)!

Bring it to SMALL in June. We won't require a muffler.

It's a great design with beautiful execution. I expect it to fly much better than the "Flounder." The tongue muffler seems the right choice to me, especially weight-wise on a low-aspect-ratio model, but I haven't used mufflers - yet - on engines without the mounting lugs. I am really looking forward to flight reports!

Thanks All!  I've got to figure out how to time my flights as I have crashed my Super Ringmaster many times because I was in the middle of a saber-dance when I ran out of fuel.  Hopefully I won't repeat that practice with my Goldfish!

Where is your count down timer.   I used to use one when teaching people how to fly RC.   I learned that about 10 minutes is all a new student can handle when first learning.    What size tank and is it uni-flo.  Best bet is take off with full tank and just fly it dry.   Then set your timer for about a minute less.   Granted the engine will lean out when in vertical position but when your timer goes off level out and fly it dry.   On my Bi-Slob's I have run out of fuel because I had the timer by my bad/dead ear.  I think I only have 2 1/2 ounce fuel load.

Great suggestion, but I've never found anything that looked like it would work.  What kind/brand of timer do you use?  Where did you get it?

Check housewares at Wally World(Wal-Mart).   Mine has a clip that I would clip to my transmitter or shirt collar.  In fact I still have it when riding the bicycle machine.  Its a West Bend Electronic Timer.
