 Tom:More like "Frankie the Chump".
 Bill, that's  a real old one- 1969 or 70 , if I recall.
Most interesting part here is that Duke sent me a typewritten letter, asking to provide him with a photo from a professional photographer and that he'd pay for it. His secretary no doubt typed it - but he wrote in ink "don't exceed $10".
Sure, Duke. Maybe in Fort Smith, not NJ.
Even back then , there wasn't a photographer who would do it for that amount, so my uncle took a glossy Polaroid. Hence, the picture was obscured and I gained 40lbs. because they  did a cut and paste.
I still have the letter.
A well known fact that Duke was frugal and then some. His engines are proof enough; though I still run them on  vintage combat ships.

Never received the $10 or even so much as a glow plug from him for my endorsement.

Or "Frankie the Chunk"!

From a skinny kid to a portly one in one easy cut n' paste, courtesy of the "artist" at Fort Smith!

I got quite a chuckle out of your experience with Duke when you told me that story at the GSCB Combat Festival.

Having worked for him during the 1970 - 1975 time frame, I can assure you that you are dead-on accurate: Duke was as tight as bark on a tree.

BTW, this would be a good time to again say how enjoyable it was to see you at NJ and get in what visit we got. In fact, the entire NJ gang ("East Coast Crazies") were all quite a hoot and a ton of fun. You all sure made me feel welcomed at the event.

Looking forward to when I have the opportunity to load up some old combat planes and head up your way again.
