FAA sUAS Registration we are considered Kites

I was just speaking with someone who informed me a FAA ruling awhile back considered control line motorized Kites and not included in the NAS. Someone might check on that.

It appears to be true that we are not considered as part of the national air space, due to the tether. That has been true forever, more-or-less.  I don't think it says anything about kites, however.

The problem, of course, is that regulations aside, no one in the general public or law enforcement has any idea of that kind of distinction.

I've heard something like that and believe it's true.  That might make registration for our small group a non-issue but in the big  picture our existence still largely depends on the RC crowd to keep the industry and institutions afloat.  We need to care about our button pushing brethren at least to that end.

Sometimes silence can work in your best interest.

Kites? Certainly not a compliment, but something that should be agreed with.

Just a bunch of harmless guys flying tethered motorised kites.

Could make the FAA pay absolutely no attention. Now, why would you want attention from the FAA?

Yeah, that's it, we are flying kites with little motors on them....yeah, that's the ticket. (Said as John Lovett said it on SNL)

Sorry, just couldn't resist

I have read here and elsewhere the the AMA has had discussions with some departments of the FAA and are in 'agreement' but the question is - Does anyone have that written down in black and white?  Probably not.  Get ready to register as an sUAS operator.

Here is a note from someone who knows for sure. But we shall see.

Hi Robert,

Thanks. Sorry I missed your call.

A couple of things. The report sent to the FAA is, at this point just recommendations. The FAA may adopt all, some, or none of the suggestions. AMA requested to put dissenting comments into some of the provisions but was prevented from doing that. We hope to express those concerns in a meeting with FAA in the coming weeks. The final process for registration, whatever that may be, won’t be released until probably around 12/15. And, AMA has argued (I think successfully) that CL models should be exempt from registration because they are not navigable (they’re tethered) in the airspace.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving.

That sounds promising!  Cross your fingers.

Thank you, Robert
