PITUS (sic) needs your $5, Mike. Yes, it will go toward importing more terrorists.

By the way, I was at Dick Salter's Memorial Service today, yakking with Dave Gardner and one of Dick's R/C buddies, who happens to fly.... Quadrotors.  This guy related a story about how a police officer he knows was called to a home where there was a Quadrotor (Drone) incident. He arrived at the home to find a Quadrotor DOA in the front yard. Inspecting said Quadrotor, they discovered that there was an FAA registration number, so he went back to HQ and called the FAA. After spending many hours on the phone, and being transferred through 15 different officials, the last one finally admitted that they weren't setup to find the owner from knowing the registration number. So, the registration number is currently useless. Please repeat after me: WTF!!!   R%%%%  Steve

He probably thinks that if he registers with the FAA, they pay him $5, but they only refund the $5 you paid if you registered before I think it was Jan 21....
And I'm STILL not registered, so I'm STILL five bucks ahead.

I registered with the notion that I was going to need it to fly my RC aircraft at my club and in competition.  My whole thinking has been for not though, as since I have registered, I have only flown CL.  Anything relating to RC for me at the moment only relates to building.  My flying days of RC may be over. That aspect of model aviation I think has passed me by.  The registration issue I think was the last straw for me.

According to the AMA, free flight and control line are exempt from the law. But, I see no such exemption in the FAA rules. It defines any uas over the .55 pound weight limit without exception. A uas to the FAA is any model that flies no matter how it is controlled. Makes no sense I know but when do government agencies make sense. Hopefully it will become official from the FAA in the near future, but I would not bet on it. So far I think it covers everything but golf balls. I wonder about stunt kites.

Question 20...

http://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/faqs/

"sUAS" is not the name of any model airplane I have, so I don't give a good @#$% what the FAA regulations say.  VD~ Steve

"Q4. What is the definition of a sUAS? Is it different from a drone?

A. A UAS is an unmanned aircraft system. An sUAS is a small unmanned aircraft system weighing more than 0.55 pounds and less than55 pounds. The term drone, UAS, sUAS are considered the same for registration purposes. Public Law 112-95 sections 331(8) and 336 define an unmanned aircraft as "an aircraft that is operated without the possibility of direct human intervention from within or on the aircraft". UAS and sUAS are often referred to as drones."

I think I have some models that fit the above description.

Only kites and rockets are exempt from what I see. Oh, you can also fly inside as that is not in the outside air space. What we need is a control line super dome. We could even paint lines on it to follow the pattern, and there would be no wind unless we generate some. Talk about judging. Hey, he just missed the intersection on the H 8's by 3 inches. And his left loop was almost a foot higher and larger than the right one. If we build it they will come.  y1

If I seen it right there is already a dome not being used for any thing in the Houston area.  I remember coming home from Denver with Melvin and Brenda when we checked out a site for indoor use for F2C flying and also F2A.

My Sig Acromaster has the Pi symbol on the wing for a "race number" (I like Piplanes and you can't describe our flying without Pi).  If you take Pi out to enough digits, eventually you should hit all sequences of numbers!  I'm covered then, right?

Yeah, the money leaves your account, and then they put it back in.  This is done to verify identity and location.  It would not be possible to register with cash. This time, it is more important to the Gov to know who where you are, than to take your money.

Moot point now, as the refund time is over.

Reminds me of when I was 15 back in 1956. I bought an old 1942 Harley "45" Flat Head, and rode with out a tag. No one cared in the small town we lived in. But one day a buddy of mine and I decided to ride to a larger town where we thought they might not be so understanding. We got some old farm truck tags that were the same size and motorcycle tags and repainted the numbers to look like motorcycle tags. We never got stopped so I guess it did work.

What ever happened to our freedom. Those of us that have been around for a while remember those days when we started driving when we were 13 or 14. We flew models where ever there was a place large enough and no body cared. When we flew at the school yard or at the ball diamond they usually came out to watch. I flew many gallons of Fox Superfuel in the town park.

Now every place is off limits as though we are some kind of criminals. People came to America for freedom, where do we go now? The hand writing is on the wall. This country is so broke it cannot pay attention. Maybe it is just me but I think we are going to have an economic earthquake the likes we have never seen in the near future. You cannot spend your way out of debt.

Oh, I forgot, this is control line. Well it started out that way.

I sent an email to the FAA yesterday and told them exactly what we do in flying control line. I explained that we fly in a hemisphere on steel cables that are no longer than 70'. I asked them if we were covered by the FAA and needed to be licensed by them. I got back a reply this morning that they were unable at this time to make a judgement with the available information and they needed a whole lot more of my personal information. So I guess we are danged if we don't and danged if we do. If we ran our businesses like the government runs their business we would last about five minutes. Trying to get them to commit to anything is like trying to push a log chain.

The rules do say that all UAS tethered and untethered come under their license. So I guess we are stuck unless they change their modus operandi. I guess they figure a blanket policy is the only policy that will work and keep them from being blamed for any and all things that could possibly happen. I am frustrated to say the least.

The reason they specify "tethered" is because some of the quadcopter operators would put a tether on their qc to get around previous definitions/regulations. Their idea was the tether made their machine a "kite", as FAA used to consider CL models. So, FAA wrote their new regulation to nix that, screwing us over in the process.   ''  Steve
