Electric power for Nobler ARF????
« on: April 19, 2017, 06:47:51 AM »
      Hello All:

Would a Nobler ARF be a good candidate for electric power?

      Suggestions and comments welcome.

                                                                                                                 Tia,

                                                                                                                  Frank McCune

Just finishing up a Gieseke Nobler component kit from Ultra Hobby.  Converting to electric was a bit of a problem since it came with mounting in place for a glo engine and SLC covering.  Engine an Arrowind 2820/07.  CG came out forward of what I wanted by 1 1/2".  Able to test fly before painting and was quite surprised how well it flew.  A little more trimming and she'll be a keeper.

Finding batteries that fit may be a challenge, but with the front-end construction of the Nobler ARF it should be easy to mount the motor: whack off the motor mount beams, then use a box-style electric motor mount.  If the batteries fit into the tank compartment then the ESC may have a nice home under the motor inside the cowl.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I powered mine with a Sunnysky 2820 920 Kv motor,APC 12x6 prop, 4S 2600 battery and a Schultze F2B controller.
Flies very well, no problem with power.
You might be able to get away with a smaller battery, I seem to recall it only uses about 2000 mahr.

Frank,
We have built 2 of them, two of my sons fly them. The only challenge is to get the CG where the plane has a good corner you have to add about 1.5 oz to the tail. I have mounted the motor two ways, one is like Tim describes a plywood box mounted to the firewall and the second which I thought was better was to use aluminum angles on the existing motor mounts.
I will post pictures of the second mount setup. The first setup was shown in a stunt news article a couple of years.

Hope this helps
Joe

Yeah, what's the fun of a plug and play system.  Yes engines get cantankerous once in a while,  but the joy of feeling that pulsating power on the end of the lines or while holding the plane keep me going.  But then again I can under stand electric in areas where peoples ears are so sensitive to the sound of a good engine.  I even say Harley motorcycles aren't loud enough.

Since the Nobler does not have a whole lot of room available for a battery I have found that using a motor with 1150 kv allows me to use a 3 cell battery. This fits into the available area much better than a standard 4 cell. Since the 3 cell battery is 3/4 of the weight it also make sit easier to get the C/G without having to add tail weight.

The Nobler, like a lot of the classic models designed for Fox .35 engines, is a bit short nosed and does not have a lot of height available to make fitting a 4 cell battery easy. This is one of the main reason we offer the RSM 3542C Black Tiger motor in 1150 and 900 kv.

Hope the observation helps.

Joe most ARF Noblers powered by modern engines need tail weight to turn well with either IC or electric. Both of mine have one ounce attached to the bottom of the rudder!.
