Cool Ringmaster by Tom Morris
« on: November 19, 2015, 02:46:39 PM »
Just finished mounting the motor and tank on my Tom Morris built S1 Ringmaster.  It goes without saying it going to be a good flying Ringmaster. All up dry weight is just under 23 oz.  Will start out with Fox 35 power (Ebay find).  The Fox has been burp plugged and has been bench tested.  It seems to be a good runner.  Turns 11K - 12K on a 9-6 prop.  Anyway now that I have pictures I will test run the Fox on the airplane.  Will try and get in a test flight one day next week.  This is the combination I learned how to fly with back in 1954.  I have never flown in any stunt computation.  I may take a stab at OTS with this one.

Nice looking Ringmaster.

I've talked to Tom Morris about his extreamly light Ringmasters.

Tom uses contest grade wood.

VERY nice Ringmaster. After seeing this one I'm especially happy that I parted out my beater and pitched it. I would have been even more embarrassed by it now.

Awesome looking plane. I also like the color scheme. Looks great, while yet simple. I'm sure it'll fly as good as it looks. Due to the weather yesterday, it looks like my last chance at a flight this year has gone away. Damn snow!

Test run of the Fox went well.  Now for a test flight.  What's a good line length for a S-1 Ringmaster?  I'm thinking around 55'.

I have no clue what would be right for a Fox 35, but with a 20FP on it, 60 feet is good.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

60' handle to propshaft is pretty much standard for that plane. With a Fox 35 you could probably run in a flat 4 stroke and have plenty of power with a 9-6 prop. Good luck with your flight.

John, I use 60 ft eyelet to eyelet with an LA 25. Well actually the engine is a Thunder Tiger GP 25 with an LA 25 piston and liner. y1

I can't remember the year, but Betty Fox and John Lowrey came toTopeka Ks with a few of those engines.   I think he they only made 100 of them.  Price at that time was $100.00.   Needless to say I am not a collector and didn't get one.

That's kind of a funny coincidence Sparky. My inspiration for the scheme was actually Matt Younkin's Twin Beech and Decathalon airshow planes. I thought the black nose would look cool with the black Fox .35 mounted up front. It was only after I finished it all with my addition of the gold lettering etc., that I realized it was a lot like your Minado.

Got in the first flight today.  This is truly a great flying Ringmaster!!  Tom can really build a straight, light airplane.   I did have a bit of an engine problem.   1/2 way through the flight the Fox 35 quit near the top of an inside loop.  I was able to bring it around and land it without any problem.  I am using a clunk tank on muffler presser.  I think the clunk line is too long and the clunk got stuck.   I will rework the tank before the next flight.   The fox has the burp stick inserted in the bypass port.  Before the flame out I was able to do inside, outside loops as well as inverted flight.  The Fox ran great the whole time.  This Fox has lost it's burp!!!   #^

Speaking of Matt Younkin here is a video I took from 2 years ago of him on a very low pass at the Davenport Iowa Air Show that I helped do the Pyro for duringTora Tora Tora performance.
