Concours Winners, is there a list?
« on: August 03, 2008, 06:27:26 AM »
While past winners of the event and Walker Cup are both well doccumented, does a list of winners exist for the Concours award?

I too would be interested in a list like this.

When was the first year for Concours?

I too would be interested in seeing a list, not of just the winners, but full placement, and AP scores as well. With all the fuss over BOM all these years, you would think the appearance points placement would be listed somewhere prominently, with pride! All that work on a nice finish, and the only guys who get publicized credit are the front row or concourse winner usually. The rest are a mystery, at least to those of us who don't know where to look. (This is where Keith will step in and tell me I'm an idiot, and we've always done it such and such a way, OK Kieth, calm down, take a breath, then go easy on me in your reply  LL~ .)

Who knows, maybe the individual appearance point scores of every entrant might be intentionally with held from publication, otherwise people might start adding stuff up to see who won on the merits of flight score only...  S?P

One could then take it to the next level, why can't we see a list of individual maneuver scores, who got pattern points, flight times, etc. so I guess it has to stop somewhere, but as big a deal as appearance judging day is, I would think that at least should be noted and records kept somewhere. There's a special award for concourse too, separate from AP? Someone explain this to me, and do they bother to rank all the ships all the way down? I guess they can't if some planes don't get any votes... Why don't we know the order of those that do get votes?

It's the biggest most important contest of the year for the top flyer's, I would think more stat's would be good P.R. for the event. I know I about wear out my Nat's issue of Stunt News, especially the Noel Drindak technology spreadsheet and the event class scores. Instead of looking for filler pieces and reprint's to fill space in S.N., an admittedly competition oriented newsletter, maybe it would be welcome to have more competition stat's and info inside.

Inquiring minds want to know!

Eric and All,  A list would be a nice thing to have just to see  and remember who they are.

Concourse winners and appearance points that are awarded are two totally different items.

Appearance points are given by the designated appearance judges and do count in the total points in every flite except for the Walker Cup competition.

The Concourse winner is picked or chosen by popular vote of all official entries.  It is a pilots award as the best or the prettiest or neatest or "I really like that plane!"  More than once the Concourse winner was not a front row plane.

One can build a perfectly executed model and not get a Concourse trophy.  It must also have  charisma and unique style and jump out at you to get voted on.

No, we do not need to know who voted for which plane, just who the winner is.

I like the current format and therefore it should remain in concrete and not be messed with.  RJ

Bob,
Don't be shy and tell the folks that you are a past winner of the Concourse trophy. If you could post a picture of your "Showtime" I am sure everone here who hasn't seen it, would love to see it. Thanks for letting Gene Molnar and myself hang out at your pad in L.A. and seeing all of your cool planes.

Ref. reply #14 above:  Actually, it appears that John Miske IS in fact in the PAMPA HOF.  Although Wynn Paul's report (pp. 82-84, May-Jun 'Stunt News', is titled '...Hall of Fame NOMINEES', I happen to know that people other than the ones shown were nominated this year.  Among those shown, and believed to have been selected, is John Miske.  (Others include Dennis Adamisin, Bob Baron, Bob Elliott and Leon Shulman.

Man, this sure is an old post... only was made aware of it because I was subscribed to it from back then. Amazing after the amount of upgrades Sparky has done, that the notification still worked. Hah!

Wow, I sure was ... errrm... ummm... enthusiastic? chippy?... back in 2008...  :-[ If I could give my then-self some advice via time travel, it would be to shut up and wait until you've been to a Nat's before you mouth off about things you don't understand.  LL~  Having worked as a PAMPA volunteer & Dist Dir, and been to several Nat's since that post, it sunk in finally that we are just a small band of volunteers, not a paid service, and that if you want something done and are brave (or foolish) enough to bring it up, you best be prepared to do the job, because being vocal about something is really (or should be) tantamount to volunteering to do it yourself.

Hi Eric,

I can help on the two I was involved with.  The 1977 first ever Concours winning Citation placed in a tie for third with Bob Baron, Al Rabe and The Bear placed ahead of us but I don't recall the winner offhand.  The 1981 Concours winning Intimidation placed second in '81 (to Billy, I believe) and then 1st/Walker Cup in 1982.  I don't believe a Nats/Walker Cup winner has ever won the Concours in the same year.  I'm pretty sure both Les McDonald and (who else) Billy Werwage won a Concours but I don't believe in the same year as their Walker Cup/Nats win(s).  Could be wrong on both counts, however.

Ted

p.s.  Neither of my Concours winners ever received 20 points, by the way.  That sort of excellence was yet to come at the hands of true artists.

Edited p.s.  Jimmy Casale might very well have done that double dip thing the year he won the Concours.  He was winning pretty much everything in that era so I couldn't put it past him!

Oh, shoot.  On the other hand P.W. may have managed to eke out a Concours in the same multiple decades he was doing what Jimmy did...winning everything.

Forget I brought it up!

The Lacemaker came after my time but I sure do remember the plane he had, I believe, in the late seventies.
I know you guys remember the one-----it was red, white and blue with lots of stars and everything was round with a killer radial type cowl.
It sure would be neat if anyone could post pictures of any of his planes. (Jose, got anything?)
Thinking back, remember the planes Jerry Pilgrim had before the Concours Award?
Every time I see a flame painted hot rod I think about that yellow one. Pure art!

Hi Les,

I only remember the Lacemaker but I was not yet fully immersed in the "fraternity" in the mid '70s so may not have gotten around enough to have been attracted to an earlier "Ski" ship.

Re Jerry, his airplanes are all, indeed, more than just airplanes.  Museums should have halls dedicated to artful craftsmanship like Jerry's.

You mentioned a yellow flame painted one.  The first couple of Nats I went to as a more or less adult were at Lake Charles in '74 and '75 and I've always remembered a gorgeous yellow, red flame trimmed ship that I thought belonged to someone from Texas although I'm not remotely certain of that.  Do you recall such a ship from those years?  Could that have been the same one you recall?

Hey Ted,
Jerry had the yellow one at lake Charles in 1974 and the black one in 1975. Not only were his planes special he had a good flying program also. I don't recall the format back then but I remember him being in the top group throughout qualifying.
Several years ago I sent all my slides to Schultzie but I don't recall having any photos of either Skis' or Jerrys' stuff.
I know Wynn Paul could provide some but right now he has his hands full with Helen and I just don't have the heart to ask him for anything.
In fact we all need to pray for her well being and for Wynn to stay strong.
I see people my age out there climbing mountains and zip lining and here I am feeling good about myself because I got my leg through my underwear without losing my balance

Thanks Ken, it's a beautiful airplane. Ski is a member of our club, he's a pretty quite person. I learned something new. He's often gives great advice to us but I never knew about this plane. The builds he brings to the meetings are always beautiful. Thanks, Ed.

Just in from David Fitzgerald for your viewing pleasure. Converted to PDF for universal ease of viewing.
Thanks to David for all his work tracking this stuff for quite some time.

Eric   I found one mistake with the Concours winners.    Jimmy Casale won in 1988. I know as I was right behind him. The list shows Windy.

Hi Ed - Well... that is interesting, but might be explained away simply. Jimmy could have been front row for AP points, and Windy could have still won Concours, which would probably make a lot more sense to people if we just called it "Pilots Choice". That happens more often than you would think in the years I have been to the 180 building.

Jimmy definitely won that year (1988). I remember the Concours prop hanging at his house.

Ok, just to put this to bed, Ed (and Mike F) are right. I hit the search feature on the AMA website and dug up this nugget, written by none other than our own Ted Fancher.
I have updated the PDF in my previous post and will give David the bad news, heh, proving that no good deed goes unpunished.  n~

Jimmy's told me his plane was painted with spray can paint. I do not know what clear was on it but it came out of a spray can also.

Gees , my last one was paintwed with spray cans , but I dont think Concours is on the cards with IT .  >:(

I put up ' post 22 ' as it has the P 40 ( kittyhawk ) winner 's picture . Along with his award .

So much for the ' dont like weathered finishes ' advisors ! Pity the comments on the F4F were chopped of , Eric . In regards to THAT !? .  :(

Matt, the picture was only an excerpt to highlight the main part of the article for this thread. I guess you missed the link to the whole article also in my post? Look again, maybe a little slower this time. Heh.

This would make an incredible article for Stunt News or Model Aviation. (I mention MA because we need all the exposure that we can get)

A discussion about both the front several rows and the Concours  listing all the people involved would be very interesting.  The article should also have an abundance of pictures.  CL Aerobatics has been an exhibit of the best builders in the world and sadly very few know about it.

Our District VIII V.P. was invited to a Dallas contest last year and had no idea that he was meeting top five and Nats winners.. He never heard of them!

It's been clear for a long time that AMA "big fish in a small pond" royalty might as well be living in a different universe from traditional modelers, even championship modelers. They see where the ad revenue is coming from and that about it. It's entirely possible that an AMA AVP may never have even seen a control-line model, less likely to have seen a stunt pattern, and far less likely to even realize there is such a thing as a CL national champion or know who they are.

Successful competition modelers are royalty only to those who follow the events.

The colors were definitely AeroGloss. I'm pretty sure the clear was AeroGloss, too. My dad's plane was painted with Jimmy at the same time and used the same colors. And the clear on that plane turned the foam-sheeted flaps into pretzels after a while.
