Cheap line reels at a buck each !
« on: March 08, 2015, 02:24:38 PM »

Found a cheaper line reel that is unbreakable also. Has no center to stick your finger into but i don't wind my lines that way anyway. 5 inch diameter and 3/4 wide with three slots to insert the ends into. Even if used just for storage for new line sets and then transfering them to the normal stick your finger in reels at 1.00 each you can't go wrong !!

I would imagine a contraption could be made too mount them on for winding up lines.   I like the big reels MBS Model Supply carries that look similar but spokes in the center.

Those look like the kind of reels that serious kite fliers use also. They don't want spokes as they hold it it one hand, and can wind line with the other hand. The large diameter helps wind line in faster. A simple ply wood center section with proper holes could be epoxied in the center of it for our use. I might order up a few.

Take a strip of 1/16" ply and cut the 3/4" center hole and the other hole. Then glue the ply to the reel with Goop or a silicone sealant.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

Just ordered 10 of the reels.  I will see what it takes to add a center spoke for the winder.  A plywood spoke about 1" wide might work.  Depending on what the reel looks like will determine the thickness of the plywood

Well my reels came in and I added a center spoke to accommodate a winder.  I made the center peice 3/8" thk plywood.  The reel has notches in the area where the line goes.  It made it possible to mount the plywood spoke with 2 wood screws.  Photos attached tells all.  This reel is great and at a $1 worth the trouble to convert.

John did you make the handle as well?  That would be the hard part for me to come up with.

The handle looks like a piece of aluminum bar stock with a "joggle" or offset bend put into it.  The grips looks like plain dowel, possibly with one of those fancy brass inserts some people like for mounting engines so the screw can be run in and out many many times without damage.

I think it is a Tom Morris winder.  I believe RSM used to sell them.  Looked around and couldn't find any for sale.  I added the 1' diameter plywood plate between handle and the large dia rod.  Wouldn't be hard to make one.  I would use K&S brass for the metal part.  Dial rod can be had at Lowes etc.

Here ya go if you don't have the tools to make the center insert I made a bunch is less than a half hour once i set up my lathes. They just snap in the center of the reels

Sent me an address and I'll ship out a couple to you in a mailer, just send me back the shipping cost.

the duck tape strip  on the one reels is to make it fit tight and not slip

Ok these are no $1 but they are a lot better than the hard pastic ones we get from Sullivan or Sig

They hold up very well.

Apologies for bringing back an old thread, but I was rummaging around and ran across this.
These reels are still listed online and it occurred to me that I have a couple of old spinning reel handles that should work just fine on a center insert - new handles no doubt available from fishing reel mfrs. and service centers.
Just a thought.

True but if you make up 10 of them as I did you have the fun of a building project and save a lot of money.  I primarily use mine for Spider Wire, (fishing line), line sets.  Great for sport flying on a budget.  :)  Shipping and all I may have spent $2 each.
