Looks like the most beauiest hot-rod!  CLP** (PE**)

Curious if it's the same model with a repaint or two different models?

Can't see a hinge!  H^^

Outstanding those older color combinations, almost Art Deco.

Rusty,

About checks.

I saved this photo of a model, I have a folder for models with great color choices on them and good thought out schemes. Good way to get ideas, from the best.

Might look overdone to some, but I like it!

I might do checks on something? The immediate front of the cowling to the Gee Bee R-3 has a double row of checks.

I think, of the planes I've seen live, Mark Scarborough's version of the Don Shultz's Avenger and Bob McDonald's Aquila are my favorites. Combination of design and finish that is hard to beat.

I am not sure at which Nats that Ron Burns Wildcat received the low score in appearance points.  It is my understanding that the appearance judges were RC Pylon racers in an attempt to use judges without any preconceived ideas about designers, builders or individuals involved with those CLPA aircraft.  Apparently, the RC pylon event determines takeoff order based on appearance which in that event meant multiple colors (evidently bright being an important factor) and shine.  That impressively finished "weathered" F-4 was doomed.

(I witnessed the demise of Ron's Wildcat at a contest in Whittier Narrows several years later.)

Keith

Keith,  I don't think I ever heard that part of the story.  Although I was there I don't recall personally who the judges were.  Of course, I don't remember much of anything anymore!

It's my old saw again...my job to build and finish, their's to judge.  Blonds and brunettes and never the twain shall meet.  Hugs to the tall blond.

I'd give high marks to the Kostecky Formula S and Talon.  Also Sirotkin's Spacehound.  Charles Mackey Carosel as built by Jim Vornholt is an eye catcher.

I am surprised that none of Windy's planes made the cut. I think he as won more concourse awards at the NATs then anyone.
Here are a few of my favorites.

Windy a Joe built a few SpitFires that were not too shabby either. D>K

Dude, thanks, I am flattered,

Mark,

It is what it is, she's a beauty.  H^^ H^^

I've looked at this photo a dozen times every time seeing something more interesting.

Like that tiny painted area at the end of the canopy, or that effect you did with the paintwork along the forward LE? Looks dotted? Tool box tray material?

Care to give up a few professional secrets on how you pulled off this incredible work of art?

Wish I had a pic of Bob's Aquila. Saw it in person once. It was striking.

At the risk of pumping Mark's head up more than it already is, the Avenger was a spectacular job.

                 Hello Gordon
here is a picture of the builder with Larry Scarinzi, He did a real good job of building the replica. When as a kid I saw the pictures of the plane in MAN I thought the plane was white with black trim and yellow pinstripe I guess I let my imagination fly.

Perhaps a consideration to Bruce Perry's Jester. A Concours winner from 2011, still performing and replicated by a few!
First one is Nats Concours winner, second one is also Bruce's and third one is Richard Wallbridge's.

Yeah, I thought that was probably the case Randy, but thought you might enjoy this one anyway.  It looks even better in person than the photo.  Truly beautiful airplane not only in finish but the lines are truly Classic!
I have the plans from Bob who graciously let me copy them when he was here a couple of years ago.  I would love to build one but so many irons in the fire now I'm not at all sure when it will happen.  It really is a fairly easy build for such a gorgeous airplane...true classic simplicity.
Bob certainly flies his very, very well also!

That IS nice. Is that like a prefab airplane you buy, or one that you build from scratch?

It is all Balsa Wood construction and made in Brazil. Luis Rossi sells them worldwide.

Dear Kevin,
Never in my life (I started to fly aerobatics in 1968) built my models from kit, or ARF, or RTF planes. However sometimes I "quoted" styles or forms, or motifs from some loved planes.
With this plane from Brasil I fell in love at first sight, upon its harmonic forms and decent painting. I do not care about the close possible relatonship with Yatsenko brothers' elliptic surfaces.
Sorrowfully I never had time and patience enough to work out and decorate my models to enter into this competition.
However, let' s take a look onto my own style:

I like that one.
There's too many nice models, for picking "the nicest".

Is it me, or is there a shift in styles from Nobler-look models with straight lines, to more curvaceous: Yatsenko Shark - MaxBee - some Brazilian designs that seem to use similar esthetic design elements
I built a Blue Pants as a kid. Wish I still had it. Might even learn to fly it.

Istvan:

I like how you rotated the engine such that the muffler was at the bottom of the fuselage.  Are there any alignment challenges to that (or did you set the engine at zero off-set?)

I believe you had posted information on your construction method previously.  Did you cover the foam with carbon veil or carbon fiber (woven) for strength?

Thanks
Scott

Dear Scott,
That alignment required to make new, special muffler: not the usual cw-rotating, but ccw rotating tangential (looking from the front), to put the muffler right under the engine. Fortunately, this -20° sloped engine position gives the MOST symmetrical behaviour of a side-outlet engine. (everybody knows and hates that anomalia in the round eights going towards and coming backwards around the inflection point.)
Because of vibration aspects I avoid to use the conventional inverted engine alignment, for at least 35 years. (And balsa constructions, too. ) My engines are turned outwards 2.5 or 3°, for safety reasons, nothing else. (This nuance saved the life of each models, at least 1-2 times in their life.
Basically my bluefoam models are covered with 1 coat of light, 18 - 25 grams / sqm glass, the main spar is double unidirectional carbon, the horizontal stab is covered with 1 coat of that. The front 1/3 of centroplane is reinforced by 9 g / sqm carbon tissue. The fuselage in front of wing is double covered with glass, and the tank chamber too. Only the engine section contains some maple, just between the ribs.
Istvan
