My digital camera came with some basic photo editing software. One of the functions is the ability to resize images. This is what I have always done. I'm sure there are other, and probably better, ways to do this as well.

Usually, if from a computer, you can open it in Paint and resize it. Then, when you save it, it will show the file size and you can determine if it needs to be smaller, or perhaps you can even enlarge it a little. I start with a 50% reduction and see how big the file size is.

Worst case, email to me and I can reduce it for you.

This is a picture of my wife, Krystal. The picture started out a minute ago at 3.1M, too big. After reducing 50%, it came out to 700KB, under the 1000KB limit.

With the very high pixel count these modern cameras have (phone in my case) the density is too much for the website so just about every photo has to be cropped down to upload.  On the phone and likely most other cameras you should be able to select 'edit' function then find a function to crop the photo.  You may have to whittle away nearly half of the photo to get the remainder small enough.  I have to always resize each photo first,  then go back on the website and attach a photo where applicable.  Sometimes it's still a little large and have to go back and crop a little more.  Once in a while I have to give up because the original was just too dense and there isn't much left once I get the size down to transport.  That's why my live reports seem to move slowly sometimes.  More photos- much more time.

I've had 4 digital cameras, an Olympus, two Canons and one Nikon. I tried to deal with the software included with the Oly and Canon, and had no joy. My brother tipped me off to IrfanView, which is a "freeware" you can download safely from "TuCows". There are a couple different versions, Win., Mac and maybe Linux. Be sure you get the correct one is all.

Much simpler to use and understand. Just go through the various options, read the drop down menus, and start. I can do a picture in as little as 15 seconds, ready to post. If I'm trying to get under 100kb, which I like to do (saves bandwidth), then it might take a couple stabs to get closer. There was a pretty good discussion on the subject in the Administration Forum (top of the list), but it appears to be gone now. I think this comes up often enough that a pinned topic would be wonderful.  y1 Steve

I don't know the name of the easy-to-use Windows picture resizer, because I use the hard-to-use (but absolutely pro quality) Gimp application.

At any rate, there are apps, and someone should say which one, that will resize a picture.  I tend to treat what I snap as raw material, to be cropped, zoomed, and otherwise massaged before posting here.

If you want to get into it, you'll find that most of these let you set the quality level on JPEG (.jpg files) and other formats with lossy compression.  Experiment with this a bit to find what you want -- low quality means small file size but less-that-stellar pictures.  Super-high quality means huge files, with no real gain over fair to middlin' quality.

Windows Paint. It's on every windows computer since Windows 3.1, I believe.

Yeah, my son (the Gamer) loaded Gimp onto his old computer after some updates before he gave it to me. I couldn't figure it out, and didn't see why it needed to be that fancy. I also tend to not need to crop my digital pictures, having learned to frame a picture pretty well with a 35mm film camera.

There are some work-arounds that some people do, like email themselves the picture and it comes back smaller and compressed and all. I think that's a poor & awful slow way to do it. Others use things like "FotoBucket" or some such, and I think it will reduce the file size for you, but you can also just post a link to the photo, which stays where it is, and is accessed by clicking on the link.

Speaking of messing with the file extensions (.exe, .jpg, .gif, etc.), long ago, I saved some pictures and after creating a title, I typed .jpeg. Guess what? Couldn't even open them on my own computer. Had to change the file extension and lose the "e". Then, all was well.  :-\ Steve

Ok Steve, first off, 2 Canons, one Nikon, and and Olympus I think adds up to FOUR not three,,

and I have been touting IrfanView for it must be a decade,, Not sure, but it was pretty dang new when I started using it, and I have a full blown Photoshop, Illustrator, and several other chunks of bits and bites on my PC, I still go to IrfanView
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Oh, yes.  That one.  (D'oh)

It needs to be that fancy for more or less the same reason that a milling machine needs all those knobs and buttons.  If all you've ever needed was a drill press, that milling machine is way too fancy.  You can do anything with Gimp, including starting from a white background and hand-making a picture.  If all you're ever going to do is resize, it's way too much.

Mark, I was thinking more about the softyware and not the cameras themselves, but corrected my malfunction before reading your post, so don't claim all the credit(s). I do tend to forget the Canon I still have (or is it Cannon?) under the seat of the truck.

There are many software options, some free, some not. What I forgot to mention is that somewhere in the 600-800 pixels wide is the key to making a picture functional on Stunt Hangar. Some guys (won't say Doc!) crimps his pictures way too small, so we have to open the pic and then jump through more hoops to actually be able to see much. The key is to 1) Crop  2) Resize 3) Compress in that order. Naming the file takes as much or more time to conceive and type as all the rest combined.  y1 Steve

Um, I do that all the time.

It requires nothing more than the standard software that any PC comes with (no need to chase image resize programs) and has never failed me.

And my local area speed seems quite OK to do this.

But why is it a poor way to resize pics?

If you post off your iPhone / iPad as I do most of the time - the app taptalk takes care of sizing of pictures. It host and post I think.

I can size a photo right on my Mac computer. After loading or moving a photo to the photo page, I 'export' it to any file such as 'documents'. It then gives me the option of filing it as small, medium or large. It will tell you the size after exporting and if over the 1000KB, do it again and pick the next smaller size.
